Beautiful! I am planning on refinishing my dark bedroom furniture in this color.
FINALLY someone who is teaching how to do this finish! ❤❤❤❤
I just bought these products and since I’m super new at anything paint I was so confused at Home Depot so if you are ignorant like me know this.. Rugged Tan will be found under the Behr paint colors along with Natural Twine. I was looking under Gliden for like 15 min. It’s not there. The behr paint samples are in the desk with the workers. I got the semi gloss- advice of the worker. The code for Natural Twine is s310-3 and Rugged tan is N90-4, in case you really can’t find them like me lol
I can’t wait to get started on my table! Fingers crossed!!
Great tip! thanks for sharing with others and happy painting! 💕
How did your painting go?. i am like you so would love to know about how easy or difficult it was.
Your tutorials are the best! You give the important information without a bunch of nonsense. 💜
I can’t thank you enough for sharing your tips with all of us! I had a very old dining set and credenza that I used this method on. It turned out beautiful! I feel like I have new furniture and was able to keep using the set my mom gave me years ago.
You are so talented. Thanks for the tutorial. I painted my Great Grandmother's dresser recently - cut off the curly Q bottom and it looks modern and amazing. Thanks to your videos. 😊
Thanks for being yourself and kind your work is amazing.
Im doing bathroom cabinet in this technique so i was going to reference back to one of your old videos for refresher course and then I see your notification and was like "Come through Shannon with the prefect timing!" I cant wait! Thank you for all your amazing tips!
I was planning on slapping some paint on my bedroom set but now I’m totally taking a step further and doing this wool like finish! So glad I came across this channel❤
That is a beautiful finish! Thank you for walking us through how to do it! :)
Such a treat to follow a channel that is knowledgeable and organized. No music, just straight talk. Thank you.
I'm new here and I must tell you, I'm obsessed with this look! You cracked the code on this Pottery Barn look! Job well done! And thank you!
Always love your tutorials. So helpful and informative! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Absolutely love ur work.Ur voice is so pleasant to listen to.Thank u so much for teaching us all.
What a smart idea Shannon with sample boards for certain finishes..and this Faux Grass ..faux Linen technique is Soo beautiful... thank you for sharing 🥰👍
What a *God wink* - this literally popped up on my feed today and I am on my way to pick up bar stools from someone who wants me to paint them with this very finish! You are a blessing. Heading to HomeDepot shortly! Thanks so much! Have a JOY filled weekend!
Thank you for your thorough instruction. Your work is awesome!!!👍👍👍
Hey Shannon! Fellow Georgian here. I finally tried your technique on a dresser and nightstand! I am in love. Thank you , thank you!!!!! So professional looking.
Omg i just finished glaze, on a free bedroom set I got on Facebook market place for free. This works! I’ve never tried a faux finish of any kind!I wish I could post photos, i bought the yellow but it looks so good I’m afraid to mess it up. The supplies were around 100 all from Home Depot but I used every little for the entire bedroom set. When she says use a little glaze she means it. Thanks so much for a great video.
Great tutorial. I can’t wait to try this finish.
Thanks so much for this very informative video!! I’ve been wanting to try this technique and this tutorial is the best! Thank you! Off the the garage! 💕
Very clear instructions. Thanks 🙏
My husband and I have been renovating our home for over a year. We are finally painting and staining Cabients. We loved your video so much we bought enough paint and supplies for our all of our Cabients. We’re doing our kitchen, pantry, bathroom vanities, and built ins. It’s been a process the worst part is brushes shedding lol. Can’t forget the cats stepping on the Cabient when they are drying 😂😅.
Awesome as always, thanks for sharing.
Omg it came out so beautiful. You are an awesome teacher. Really enjoyed this video. ❤
Nice video. Thanks for sharing the colors. Gotta try this.
Wow, I learn so much from you. Thank you, thank you, because of you I started to refinish my dining room suite and it turned out fantastic, So far so good, buffet is done, I’m on to the poly topcoat now. Hope I don’t screw it up at this final state. 🤣🤣. Onward to the table…..
Gorgeous and great instructions thank you, I love your content!
I finally switched to using a deck staining brush fir your technique- a beautiful soft one from Benjamin Moore. It made a big difference!
This is incredibly helpful!! Thank you!!
I have sea drift furniture but it looked very gray next to a warmer piece I had. I used rugged tan to "tan wash" (I learned tan-wash from you too) the warmer piece looks so good and now blends nicely with the pottery barn furniture. Thank you!
Beautiful!
I did this and it's beautiful! Tysm❤
Did this today on a textured balustrade coffee table and matching end table, absolute gorgeous finish!! Just a quick tip the glaze does not like to overlap so if you accidentally get a bit on a side your’re not working on yet clean it before it dries and you’ll have a beautiful clean finish.
This is so incredibly helpful! We have a PB table in driftwood and I love it. Unfortunately, there were several damaged areas from a recent move. I’m thinking I’m just hoping to re-do the entire top using your method so it’s back to new!
Aaaaamazing! 🤩
Thank you so much for all this info!💖💖💖
love it thanks for the tips
I was not about to subscribe to yet another channel; however your detailed instructions - well they are excellent. So yes, I am subscribing. :) Cheers!
Thank you so much for sharing
She doesn't say but the glaze is an oil based product, so clean up will not be soap and water. This also looks great with fly-specks, just don't go overboard.
It is very important to wait until the glaze is completely dry before adding the top coat.
One BIG tip: She did horizontal strokes over wood parts that should have a vertical grain direction. Note the vertical moldings on the top of the face. Those would be lengthwise grained. So an easy way to do this properly would be to tape these off, wait for it to dry, then do vertical strokes on those sections.
Easy way to explain this:
Imagine a square frame with mitered corners. First do the top and bottom in the same direction with the miter taped off. Let that dry, then do the two sides, again with the miter taped off, in the opposite direction. Yes, this takes more time, but SO worth it.
The last application of the light drybrush is not always needed, but sometimes, a dark aging wax is really nice. That would go on AFTER the final topcoat. The topcoat will not stick to wax.
I did this technique on a black IKEA desk that someone had spilled nail polish remover on. I now have a white desk with a light wood top!
Love your videos and techniques! Any suggestions for achieving the pottery barn Sausalito charcoal finish?
What paint did you use for dry brushing?
I was wondering the same thing. I'm assuming she used the same as the base coat.? @blacksheephouse
It was Behr natural twine (sample pot)
Appreciate your videos so much! Love your style and teaching. Currently working on a dresser set using this technic. Would you be able to recommend a Lowe's or SW paint color for they dry-brushing yellow color? I'd really appreciate. The pieces look so good now, I'd hate to mess it up on the nearly last step. Thanks for all you do!!
I am hooked on your videos now!! Thank you! Would you recommend oil based over water base in very humid environments?
You are awesome source
Great work. I like that you use cheaper paints.
Love your work!
Which out of the three from the beginning of the video are you showing in this video?
Love that I found your page! Trying to stain/paint some pine shelves to match the pottery barn "smoked gray" could this method work on wood too? Same process?
Really love this look! We are trying to do the same but running into a problem finding the Rust-Oleum Decorative Glaze. Any suggestions for a substitution?
I'm back with more questions haha! Would you recommend and oil based poly for a bathroom vanity? We have the Sausalito bedroom furniture but I'm hacking a vanity to match the finish for an adjoining bathroom.
Have you tried adding physical texture on a solid wood piece by first scraping with a wire brush? I think that'd really get the Seadrift finish.
Hi from Canada 🇨🇦- love your channel! I can’t find Briarsmoke in gel stain up here at our HD - only in regular stain. Would that work over paint? Or would you recommend blending two gel stains together- if so which two stain colours would you suggest? Thanks!!
Perfect!! I wish I could give you 100+ thumbs up😄
I finally found someone doing this look. I will work on my cabinet, do I need to sand them down with orbital sander before applying a primer or just use the liquid sandpaper?
What was the product you dry brushed on after the glaze? Thank you for this fabulous video!
Hello there thank you for sharing this awesome idea! I’m trying to give this look to an IKEA sideboard (Ersnas) but since its made out of a plywood material I’m not sure if I should use the water based primer? Please help with any tips or advice you might have I would highly appreciate jt 🙏🏼 TIA
Hi. Your an excellent teacher and communicator about these projects. I’m having drying issues with the oil based glaze. Been ne’er 24 hours applied over the semi gloss base and the glaze is still tacky to touch after 24 hours. In my house at 70 degrees ! Is this normal ? Can say’s 4 hours dry time.
Would you use the Matte oil base poly for a dining room table too?
Wow
Thankyou for sharing …have you tried any of these finishes with flat paint ?
Cool technique thanks for sharing do you have a video on refinishing a table top to a faux wood finish?
Yes 🙌 It’s so awesome on tables! czcams.com/video/9hJEG4MrZuE/video.html
This is a beautiful finish. I tried to get the Rustoleum decorative glaze and it’s discontinued 😢 I live in a small town so it couldn’t even be ordered in. I also live in Canada. What would you recommend as an alternative?
Wondering if the base color coat works for both brown/gray finish?
I want to try it both in a 2 different dressers
I love this finish. My problem is finding the right products here in Germany. Especially glazes, and gel stain I can’t find. Any idea what I could use instead?
I absolutely love your work. You make it look so easy. I have a question. I bought a solid oak table and it was in perfect condition except a tiny hole in the top. I did 2 Coates whitewash and then I filled it with white wood filler then stained it. It left that area super dark.
Do I just sand that off and dig it (gently) out of the hole to get rid of the dark mess? ♥️
Hey! That’s frustrating to have happen, wood filler is extremely absorbent which is why you generally need to prime it before painting, if I were you I would try to paint over it to match your table color and then clear coat it all, you can mess around with color combos to see what works best, im sure you already are familiar with the faux wood looks here on the channel and one of those might match well 🖤
Could you show the other two sample boards and what products you used Shannon? Love the sample board 💡!
I’ll be posting videos on those finishes within the next few weeks
I like this look but would like a grey white wash look, but not sure what paint to use and it doesn’t need to look perfect
Thank you what are you do if you put too much gel stain on & it dried? Do you have to paint over? Also, how do you get it from? Not looking so shiny finish? Thank you thank you.
Hello, I have a old cherry veneer dresser that we added gel stain to and after 24 hrs was still not dry so we decided that we were going to paint it. So far, we painted top with primer. Would we be able to use something like liquid wood on it? Thanks!
Did you create this video before or after the dresser? Do you still recommend the dog tool and wish or just the kids brush?
Hi! I have a black dining table that I want to do the gray wash on. Can you give me tips on how to start. Do I sand first or can I just prime first?
I don’t believe is solid wood. Please advise.
Thank you
Barbara
You use a satin for the desert tan. I used left over chalk paint. Will less smooth like chalk be a problem?
Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us. How long should I wait after the Rugged tan before glaze?
I usually leave it overnight or 4 hours if it’s a nice sunny dry day
Hi. Big Fan! Have you ever done this method starting with black and adding beige or brown stain, then highlight with black?
I want to try this on a dresser that is already painted a light grey. Do I need to prime it or can I go straight in with the rugged tan paint?
Just found this video and it is exactly the look I want, however I am having a hard time finding the color Rugged tan in Glidden. Even on their website it does not come up. Is there a substitute you could recommend please?
What paint did you use for the dry brushing?
Can you use a regular stain vs glaze?
Love this finish. I’m redoing pieces in my home and super newbie at all of this. I want to do this on some of my side tables, just want to clarify that using an oil base top coat over water base paints is acceptable?
I’ve had great success with it, just be sure each step you do is fully dry before moving to the next
What fluffy brush is that. I have use your technique before with the deck brush. But this would be better for the draws..
Will this work on MDF board after the plastic/melamine coating is removed from a cabinet,?
Do you sand between coats of poly?
Is it super important to use a semi gloss paint? I bought the behr enamel in eggshell. Will that still work with the glaze?
Hi
Do you still use rugged tan as the base coat? Thanks 😊
Does the tan layer need to be fully dry bfr you put glaze on it?
2:09 I probably missed something, but the last colour that you dry brush through, is it Rugged Tan again or is it another colour?
TIA
Hello, I can't seem to find "rugged tan" under Glidden, but I did find it under Behr. Do you know if Glidden discontinued this color?
I want to do the pottery barn gray finish and cannot find the varathane gel stain briarsmoke
Anywhere in my area. Any substitutions you would suggest?? Thank you
Hi! Can you tell me the color yellow you go back in with to dry brush furniture & the finish?
I have kitchen cabinets that are the color dockside..
Any suggestions for my kitchen table top for paint and glaze. It a like a dark grey, with brown. Stainless appliances ….. black stove and hardware. Wish I could send a pic. I’ve been covering this up this table for years trying to figure out a color.
Hi!! I love this so much. Q: the second coat of paint after the glaze…is it the same tan as the base paint color?
It’s a pale yellow 🌝
Hi if my dresser is already white and doesn’t need any sanding can I just start painting and with the gel stain?
Do you have any tips on doing touch ups with this finish? I used it and love it, but I got some scratches in it before clear coating.
Is there anyway to stop the yellowing of top coat? Maybe if you put. Water base on top of oil base? I think you are so talented, ametur here
Does the tan need to be semi gloss? Thanks
Do you offer consultations for someone looking to update their old furniture?
The rugged tan I got was PINK
I wasn’t sure what color or product you were putting on in the dry brush step?
what brand of paint is your favorite ?
