As someone who grew up in SW Missouri I can tell you, this character is just a combination of so many real life people. David is from MO too and you'll find guys like this in every diner, truck stop, auto garage, tavern, Wal Mart, etc...
as well as ALL thru the South.

My dad was born and raised in Missouri. This character is a dead ringer for him during my childhood in the late70s-early80s. Wardrobe, accent & hairline are all spot on. And you could indeed find him at the tavern.
Man, I miss that dude.

I grew up in Tennessee and knew this character for sure.

Tim Meadows is one of the few cast members who never breaks character no matter how silly it gets.

Chris Farley got him in the Matt Foley Prison skit.
It's awfully annoying that as the seasons progressed, more and more cast members were consistently corpsing. Sandler was bad, but Jimmy Fallen was the worst and I think he sorta normalized it.
I appreciate that.

David Koechner has had many successful roles. Not sure what you guys are talking about...if you think this is bad you guys would have an annheurism over more then half the episodes of SNL back then.

David Koechner was my favorite cast member in this very underrated season and he was among a lot of talent.

Chris kattan? Seriously. Curious why him. Playing a “faggot” became boring before gay marriage became a society welcomed thing. Hence why we don’t see Chris kattans comedy anymore, it’s just one flavour that stopped being funny after the third sketch.

This video just popped up for me and I had no memory that Koechner was on SNL. I was a fan of Dave Gruber Allen from Freaks & Geeks and I've been a fan of Koechner's since then. They had some great songs.
I'm pretty sure T-Bone is the same character that he plays in 'Run Ronnie Run!'
And a stage show with Dave Gruber called The Naked Trucker and T-Bones. They got one season on Comedy Central. It was brilliant.

I don't know why people bitch about this era of SNL ('95--'01); this was the new cast that included Will Ferrell, Darrell Hammond, Molly Shannon, Cheri Oteri, this guy (Bill Koechner), Tracy Morgan, Chris Kattan, Nancy Walls (Michael Scott's gf in The Office). There were many sketches as good as this, recurring characters. People just line up to sh*t on something because everyone else is doing it. Maybe look-before-you-sh*t next time, you'll find something of value.
