Would imagine it works best in densely populated areas where iPhones are popular.
Yes, thats why it will suck in India where no one really have iPhones. Wanted to get one for my dog but naah.
@@GiggleNuggetsZone I just watched a video on why it is not a good idea to put an Airtag on pets. (Especially small ones like cats)
iPhones are popular everywhere 🤣
@@GiggleNuggetsZone samsung has a similar product. that might be better in a country like india
@@andrewkim2013 samsung is crap. I am already very down into the rabbit hole of apple garden.
Did the ‘thief’ have an iPhone - be interesting to know how quickly the alert for the ‘unknown tag following you’ happens….
It will only notify you once you are at your home or work and at the start of the video they turned on lost item so it wouldn’t notify until they are somewhere specific
He did not, but our hope is that even if someone did get notified it would spook them enough to throw the bike in a hedge rather than take the tracker off, but we’ll just have to see how popular these become as to how they’re treated…
@@Bikespeeds other half went on club run today (9:00-14:00) with my tag and her IPhone. Location updated quite a few times, no notification on her phone until she returned home and went out again about 30 mins later without the tag! I’ve now hidden one in the frames of our bikes.
Any thief will just mark his current location as home after 5 minutes and get the notification that your airtag is covertly tracking them with your stolen property, then he can cause it to ‘sound off’, then toss it. It’s worthless as a theft deterrent.
@@sciencescripture I suspect you’re over estimating the intelligence of your average bike thief.
I lost my 2k ncm bike last night in Toronto, never again, purchasing this right now
Sucks man, I'm sorry. I'm here watching bike thieves getting beaten cause someone ran off with my front wheel, which was cable locked to a U-lock, while I was at the gym
Bike thieves and bankers are the worst people in the world
@@zacharykam5161 you forgot lawyers 🤣
I've lost over several bikes the past year, totaling to a few grand. If these were made sooner maybe I would have still had one or 2 of them.
Based on Apple's website, it cannot help if you bike has stolen and the robber has an iPhone as well:
"AirTag is designed to discourage unwanted tracking. If someone else’s AirTag finds its way into your stuff, your iPhone will notice it’s traveling with you and send you an alert. After a while, if you still haven’t found it, the AirTag will start playing a sound to let you know it’s there."
Does the bluetooth of the thief iPhone have to be on for it to notify the thief?
so, it can be utterly useless... and even alert the thief - who will search the bike (2 minutes ?) and know they're tracked. krap
Apple has hit a winner with these, I love them and now have six set up. A mate of mine's motorbike got nicked the other day and this would've been a godsend for him if only he had one. Oh well, at least I have learnt from his misfortune.
Good vid mate.
If you've something with it's own battery i would rather get a tracking module based on GPS or Wifi LBS. You can get such modules for ~10 bucks, they're smaller, have even a microphone and are much easier to track because they don't rely on iphones being nearby so you get much more frequent updates of the position. Also remember that the Airtags will a) start beeping after some time and b) most will know what it is and just throt it away. If you really want a thief protection build it in so nobody can see it. AirTags are made to find your own stuff, but for thief protection they've too many downsides in my opinion.
@@Leif_YTi have been searching for something like that for years. The problem is gps trackers are immensely expensive, very big and usually have very poor battery life. Near field trackers are smaller, cheaper and longer lasting but don't help with theft. The airtag is a good idea because it makes use of the wide network of IPhone users to effectively use a near field tracker as an long range tracker. If you know any device that i could use similarly as theft protection I'd like to get a recommendation.
@@jimihenrik11 I've recently used the ZX620, but there seems to be a never version. Currently there are modules like the ZX303
& ZX623 (and a more expensive 813 or so), or with enclosure the GF21 and GF22. If you're into electronics and prefer to do you own software instead of a 3rd party market one you could also use something like a Sim808 and an arduino or esp. Usually the pure electronics for GPS trackers are very cheap these days - just make sure to look in Asian Stores like AliExpress or in hobby stores for quadcopter/drones and such stuff. They usually use similar modules to track their drones & planes or to find them when they get lost.
The battery life is a problem with such systems, but if you protect an e-bike or some devices that have big batteries inside it's not such a concern. If it has to run on a small battery i would use an accelerometer to activate it only when it gets stolen - so it doesn't run 24/7.
But yes, it depends a lot on what you want to track. If someone still wants to use an AirTag for anti theft tracking i would at least try to destroy/remove the sound mechanism so it won't start beeping after some time.

Depending on the country mobile operators might also have solutions. Here you can get a small gps / gsm tracker for like 2-3 bucks a month with the e-sim included and 7 days battery life. Often they advertise them as GPS Pet Tracker or so.
@@Leif_YT thank you. I will look into that. 7 days surely isn't enough for theft protection. But i have a hub dynamo on my bike. Maby i could build something to keep it charged.

These air tags are brilliant. Very impressed.
yeah for real
Not brillant for theft, since they'll send a notification after a while to the thief if they have an iPhone.
@@adviceforidevice4536 mostly likely they will have a cheap android, iphones now adays are too damn expensive.
@@sfv6 *most likely**
For the price, it's a steal.
I'd put a decoy air tag under the saddle, and put a functional airtag imbedded deeper somewhere like in the bicycle rod or something. If the thief flicks away the decoy the airtag, I'd still be able to track him.
For a higher end bike it’s definitely worth £60 to keep it safe
Thats actually a great idea!
or.. you could just embed it in the frame somewhere from the start?
Useless as the embedding takes away from the tags signal power.
It's using a low power signal in order to remain usefull for a long period of time. By placing it inside of a frame you would seriously limit it's power thus reducing the pickup by any iPhones in the area.
@@Roomer645 yeah probably, I didnt strongly factor in the signal. Okay how about sticking it at the end of the bike handle, and painting it color of the handle.
Dang, no thief beat down!
I was expecting that as well haha
Really good video showing both screens very helpful thank you so much 😁🙏💛
As soon and Apple announced this I thought this would be great for my ebike and battery. You could even go Samsung tracker and Apple tracker and get wider coverage.
Great Video! Thank you!
I took the speaker out of the tracker, and placed one on my car, so even if there is a notification to the thief he wont find it with the speaker
If he own a iPhone he can disable it within 3days
@@youknosav3122 three days is loads of time in these situations
Unless the thief has an iPhone that can alert him of the tag following him so he can disable it! Then he does not have to find it.
Just install two tags if the item is very expensive. Most thieves would be done after finding one tracker.
It has precision finding. People are probably smart enough where to find them.
Nice video!! I played it smart, i've put an airtag in my electric scooter tube hahaha, they need to screw it open first to get the tracker lol

Or they can scan with their i phone ?
To see if it has a tag. Is that how it could work. ?

*Air Tags SUCK!*
I told my wife I was going duck hunting, so she put her tag in my gun case.
Caught me with my pants down at my girlfriend apartment.
Now my wife is gone, my girlfriend dumped me and I can't find ammo to hunt.
thanks for this video! very interested makes me want to get an air tag
Just need to find a good place to put the tag where they can't be seen or removed easily
End of seatpost (inside the bike )
@@nibbs15 seatpost most common diameter is 27.2mm external diameter, whereas the airtag diameter is ~32mm, so it's not going to fit there.
NOT inside the seat post. It's too easy for a thief to find it there. Perhaps in the forks or inside the down tube at bottom or inside the pedal housing. Anything they could easily take off and replace like the seat or handle bars so they could hide the bike theft will be a bad place to put it.
Under the seat is an all-too-obvious hiding place. The place can't be inside something metallic since that would block the RF signal. Companies should make ordinary bike attachments like that for a water bottle but with a hidden place for storing these AirTags. It would also be a good place to store keys or a little spare money.
This is an clever solution. It uses the standard mounting holes for a bottle cage, hiding as well as offering protection from the weather. The bottle cage can be mounted on top if it. No connection to the seller. www.amazon.com/Bracket-Attachment-Included-Standard-Accessory/dp/B0954RVTBL
I wish they had these a couple of years earlier. I've had several bikes stolen with no real solution to tracking. So I'm liking the reviews and functionality that I might get one of these. This is great for making sure where you're children are.
thanks for the informative video
Very good testing, I was looking for something like this, I’m trying to put an airtag on a motorcycle
They work! Worth the small price really
I put one in my car in my trunk under the carpet where the spare goes so far so good for me it tracks well
Amazing video. Thank you
Thanks mark!
I wonder if the ‘hits’ or refresh rate would increase by adding multiple air tags? I’m thinking of adding one under my seat, and then another in a spot that no one would check. If one airtag is found, thief would possibly think there is no more tracking happening to the bike possibly?
We were also thinking of hiding one, but in terms of the everyday rider, taking their bike to be dismantled to have the battery swapped every year could be a pain but on a higher end bike it’d definitely be worth hiding one
@@Bikespeeds Assuming you put it in the frame and it does't block/hinder signals. Thats what I'm waiting for, (more) real life tests.
They ping off of other bluetooth capable devices with the appropriate bandwidth, so in more urban areas it'll have a higher refresh rate and higher accuracy! If you're in the countryside, well, best of luck! This video is essentially my source: czcams.com/video/fkgAOPJMsfE/video.html
@@Bikespeeds I have mine taped to the inside of my chain ring. It’s literally invisible, and I haven’t had to change the battery after one year.
Wonderful!!
Got my bike stolen a month ago. Was happy to have one of these sooner!
Bare in mind, the air tag only gets pinged by people on the latest update and that’s only just been released, these are going to work better and better
I have been waiting for someone to do this video and finally someone has. I just subscribed and am defiantly going to buy an airtag for my marlin 6. Thank you for this informative and helpful video!!!
Thanks for the sub!
What if thief found tag and removes battery?
Would you be able to do a test with the Galaxy Tag as well for a comparison? This video was extremely helpful!
I did the same thing with my airtag and Velcro tape. Great video
Did your hijacker get any alerts on this phone about the airtag? I think that's the one part of the system that will make it difficult. If the thief knows there is a tag, they'll find the tag, throw it in the trash and move on.
The best thing about friendly bike thieves is that they don’t check the bike for trackers when they steal it. It’s those unfriendly ones I’m more concerned about.
Ofcourse they do that or they will from now on.
They will catch up with these tracker trends and adapt accordingly.
Seen the same with trackers on vehicles that were disabled or jammed by thiefs for several years now.
@@Roomer645 What? The friendly bike thieves will adapt? Hahaha. I think you have misread my post or misunderstood it. We are in agreement. My post implies the same thing as yours does.
Just put a dummy Tile tag somewhere on the bike, they’ll take that off and assume that’s all
@@sidbrun_ I check too thoroughly for that to work when I steal a bike.
Always mount a Samsung tag too. Double security and at least one of them won’t tell thief he is being tracked

I used the same Velcro to attach to a drone.

Well made!
Got in my car. I've removed the speaker before ;) hopefully I don't have to use it properly 👍
Smart tag has manual refresh for location pinpoint so i think it will be easy with smarttag

No nonsense thank you!
Saddle made sense. I spoke to Apple about this idea but they said it wouldn’t work when the tag went out of range from my iPhone
Good one
Getting used to see the driving opposite from the rest of the world 😂😂😂 On the right side.
That’s a real nice baclava
Remember that they are only picked up by devices running iOS 14.5 which is a VERY SMALL percentage of all devices running iOS. It’ll take another few weeks or months until these AirTags are “brilliant”. I think they’re so cool still!
“And” we live in a relatively small town and this was done at 3pm on a cold Saturday afternoon there wasn’t many people about abs we still tracked him down. I was genuinely amazed we did it!
@@Bikespeeds Yes, it’s very amazing! This is just more proof that Apple puts in as much effort into a $29 product as a $2000 MacBook…
@@itriied5027 I said to my Son I didn't expect it to work & he said "Its Apple, they wouldn't launch it unless it worked" he was right
With an accelerometer on the airtag, will the airtag notify the owners Iphone if an item is moving? Or can the iPhone have a notification if something is suddenly away from you.
Now i have a reason to buy airtag 😍 thank you for sharing this
Nice video
This is going to end well
Did you mark the item as missing? I wonder if that would make the location update more frequently
We did! Still plenty of testing to be done in a future video there
It only updates in range of other iphones
Good video! I did the same experiment for my car on my channel!
My understanding is if the thief has an Iphone the thief will be warned by their Iphone that there is an Airtag that does not belong to them in their vicinity...rendering the Airtag useless once the thief removes and discards it.
Hi. I've been wondering if the orientation of the Airtag will be better for detection? If I had a choice to mount the Airtag at 0 Degrees or 90 Degrees on a bicycle, for example, is there an improved possibility of detection?
Imagine Bluetooth as dropping a stone in the middle of a pond, the waves go out in a ripple evenly around it, doesn’t matter what way you drop the stone, it isn’t directional, thanks for watching!
@@Bikespeeds untrue, the metal part blocks the bluetooth signal. The antenna is under the white plastic.
Brilliant
love the way you say cyclepath with your accent.
Where are you watching from, sounds normal to us lol
@@Bikespeeds finland :D
I wish it updated every 2 minutes
I'm not sure if they updated the firmware or the Find My app as of 3/31/2022 but the Airtag immediately lets the nearest iPhone user know they are being tracked. I put a speakerless Airtag on my wife's bicycle as a theft deterrent but when she went out for a ride she got 5 notifications in an hour. Kind of useless at this point.
Exactly this. All those jealous stalker ex boyfriend types ruined these tags for tracking bikes if the thief has an apple product on their person (most likely).
Question… if the person who stole the bike uses an iPhone 11 or later, wouldn’t he be informed that an air tag has been placed on him or smth?
I think they get a notification when they arrive home, but other videos say that it can take a few hours for this notification to come through. I have seen a few AirTag Bottle Holders on eBay that would be pretty hard for a thief to find.
How long battery last. Pls. By the way great video
1 year as far as we’re aware but only time will tell
I keep thinking he was saying psychopath. I was doing laundry and not watching the video. 😂
Be afraid, be very afraid, We’ve got an airtag. We’ll find you Lol
did the friendly thief get a message on his phone saying he is being tracked by an airtag?
Apparently it only does this once the person returns to their home. And also they have to have an iPhone of course
In my video I set mine up on my bike! It works great !!
Glad to hear it! We’re a fan ourselves
What if thieves start looking for air tags now to throw them out or remove them from stolen items?
Will this signal 'permeate' a steel bike frame?
Whoah 😮
For all of you saying that the thief would get a notification they would, but putting an AirTag under the headset or inside the handlebars tapped Or something. Is something I highly recommend, as it would be very hard go reach and remove and I thrift would probably be notified but would not go thought the trouble of trying to remove it
Did Apple let you buy your unit WITHOUT providing your AppleID?
They refused to sell to anyone here, unless we purchased on our AppleID account.
Tracking starts the moment you attempt to buy the unit(s)
Apple Air Tags are v.cool. Tags you're IT! mobeleash
How do you make sure it doesn’t chirp when the bike is stolen
how bout instaling it into the bike seat post?
It won't fit on a regular seat post. May fit on an aero seatpost though.
i put the airtag into the bike not on the outside because thiefs will look for trackers at the outside first.
Have you tested it ? GP Lama did and the signal is really poor inside a tube.
@@leskennedy it just works perfectly. My Bike is fully Carbon many that doesn’t effect the Bluetooth that much.

did you put it in a lost mode? i would say that helps when you looking for it, maybe shows more often where it is... and you should have gave an iPhone to the "thiev" to see if it notify him that airtag is following... or to try to get your details by tapping iPhone on airtag... to see if you find something with airtag, how easy is to get the details of person who lost it, anyway cool video do more:)

This is going to kill every single company with expensive tag systems.
Creative destruction at its finest.
those companies can align themselves with androids and chinese companies
I had a idea of putting the airtag in the inside of the bikes frame.
As long as the frame is CF, it'd probably work.
I’m working on a video on my channel now about it , it works perfectly so far.
I’ve done that, works fine. (Carbon frame)
@Frank Silvers there is a way to wire it directly into the cars power
So was this airtag updating its location based off coming within a distance of someone's iPhone? If the thief didn't have one, how else could it update?
Any car or person you go past that has an iPhone will update it, we live in a small town and it worked, and our “thief” had no iPhone on him so we’re honestly pretty impressed
As more people update their iphone, I assume the more frequent the ping.
How far can it track
How did you attach the tag to the seat?
Velcro :)
Was the airtag making sound while you were tracking it? If so, could the 'thief' hear it?
No sound, good design really
@@Bikespeeds your can hear them.
It’s will work in jungle above 200km?
"friendly thief" 😛
Sounds like possibly hours of wild goose chase with zero guarantee of property being located. No thanks.
*Oh.. so it was just his friend, not a thief?*
The secret will be to find a good place to hide it.
And usually, the better the place, the worse the AirTag will be able to transmit...
Like within your bottom bracket shell, head tube or fork steer tube. If it doesn't work in those locations, then it isn't really that valuable.
Under your seat and in your saddle bag aren't solutions. Thieves will simply check under the saddle of every bike they steal and toss any attached bags or accessories.
Does it alert you if the bike moved I initially?
I believe you can set it up to do so, we put it in “lost mode” which notified us whenever it moved
Id imagine the thief was an android user hahah totally unaware he had an airtag under the seat hahahha
Why does it take this long to get the location updates? This runs on FindMy network so lost airtags can communicate with all Apple devices nearby which is why I thought it would deliver near real-time updates as there'll be a bunch of Apple devices mostly at all times.
It relies on making a blue tooth connection & in turn the phone it’s connected to being online. That’s why we did this to see if a speeding bike could be connected in the few moments it was near another device. We had to second guess where he was going with local knowledge but that we did & this was a genuine find & to come out in front of him for the stop was as perfect as it could have gone!
@@Bikespeeds I suspect its more down to conserving the airtags battery life that it probably only pings out every now and then to see if there are iOS devices nearby on bluetooth. It runs off a rather small coin cell which is rated to last a year. It simply wouldnt have enough power to be trackable in realtime for an entire year.
Mr. Barrett looks a lot like Tim Cook…. 😀
One big thing to condiser here. Apple has protocol in place that if the bike thief has an apple phone it will notify him of aitag following him. After that it's pretty obvious that there is an tag on the bike. Just heads up.
Will the Airtag work with Android? If so what app would it work with? Or is there a better option for Android users? Thanks 🙏👍
My hunch is that these AirTags with do for bike theft what cell phones did for crimes like muggings. When cell phones became common, muggers had to fret that the person they were stalking might call the police. With these AirTags, bike thieves will have a similar worry. Apple should spend some of its marketing money publicizing such successes.
I assume most bike thieves will start looking under the saddle to see if there's an AirTag and just throw it away. Not even kidding. That will happen. Unless you integrate the AirTag into the frame of the bike, these things will become common knowledge eventually. Nice demonstration nonetheless.
We really have to see how it works in terms of popularity, If everyone does it, thieves will become pretty aware of them but if it’s only a select few we could have better success with getting our bikes back
Works the best, when the thief steals your iPhone as well!
At 00:00 I can see that your LED lamps flicker badly. It may cause eyestrain or headache.
Shame they don't quite just fit inside a handlebar - maybe apple could make alternative shapes
