Want to learn how to make your own steampunk gauntlet/mechanical arm for a super sweet costume? This set of two video tutorials will show you how you can make one out of fairly cheap materials like foam and hot glue. I have a pattern available to buy if you want to be able to recreate this mechanical arm sleeve for your own cosplay.
Hinged Rivets Tutorial➜bit.ly/2tNHnCe
Hydraulic Piston Tutorial➜bit.ly/2ui3TqC
If you don't want to make a steampunk arm, you can still use the base pattern to make a cyborg arm sleeve, robot arm, or automail cosplay of your design.
If you have never worked with EVA foam before, I would probably suggest starting with a simpler pattern to learn the techniques, to avoid a bit of frustration.
If you would like to support me on Patreon, you can get access to my patterns as I draft them, get each pattern as I release it for free, and have access to extra content. Extra content for this project is a one hour video comprising all the footage I filmed while making the arm, sped up 4x.

How do I size down the arm piece?
@@felrise3966 get bigger soon or just scale the paper copy down
"Cause you know you want one."
.....indeed i do
One major top tip for others is use metallic sharpies on the foam as it makes it a lot easier to see than the standard black one (as its normally black on greyish black foam). Sounds simple I know but makes it easier.
Nice tip!
All these intros are my FAVORITE 👍👌👌

PS:Great video again👍🏻💪🏻
Not sure yet.. pirate gun, steampunk gun, bowler hat, pith helmet, wonder woman shield..... any requests?
Yeah, steampunk gun!
Can someone help me catch his attention? I would love for his help taking on my challenge! I would love to make something like this but I have only half of my arm. This would make for a really awesome costume and I was wondering if I could have his help in designing it?
what do you need exaclty ? ^^
We need to help
This is now my favorite steampunk tutorial out there! Keep the great videos coming!
This is wicked cool!! 😲😄 I love the fun intro :). I think this is one of your most complicated yet! Love it 💚 I always enjoy your swirly steampunk pieces!
Gotta have some swirls:)
Lost Wax aww yeah! You know it!
Thanks Chris, i`ve waited for this tutorial. Your steampunk arm looks awesom.
As creative and fun as usual. Love your style and work. Can't wait for the second half ;)
It is affordable.
It is a mostly simple design.
It looks better than other mech arms out there.
It is actually comfortable when done right.
IT IT PERFECT, LOST WAX THANK YOU!
Once again Chris, you nailed it! Looks great! Love how you figured out how to make articulated elbow piece. Been trying to figure this out. Would love to see you do a fully articulated ironman inspired steampunk cyborg. I know thats alot. But I believe in you Chris! I want to build this an I need your tutorial expertise.
philip thompson i was just thinking the same thing, i think it would look incredible as an entire suit.
You are right, it would look amazing, and it is a ton of work. I'm not sure if that's something feasible for me at this point. Of course if I get enough people requesting it.........
Lost Wax,ok people, lets bombard Chris with request to create the build of his career! The ironman inspired fully articulated steampunk cyborg!!! You can make a lot of money off this project pattern! Whattaya say people!? C'mon chris you can do this!
philip thompson im in!
philip thompson so am I!
This is proof that a good paint job can make anything look like anything
Very cool!! Every thing from the intro, video, and arm are all well done. Thanks!!!
Absolutely wonderful! Not only great guidance, but always entertaining! Looking forward to part 2!
Well worth the wait. Another brilliant creation.
These actually are really helpful for me because I’m currently working on a mechanical arm for a cosplay.
Glad they are helpful!
I love this! Can't wait for part two. Definitely need to make one of these.
Господи, не перестою удивляться вашей фонтазии. Это шикарно!
this... is absolutely amazing, so much effort put into this I love it!
Youve really put much effort to it
I’ve got a sick steampunk cosplay, and THIS IS HAPPENING! Super cool
Your tutorials give me hope that I can actually make something like this myself!
In the midst of building this... for someone who really has issues with patterns (I have trouble with the scaling up and down), this really isn't difficult. I highly recommend anything this maker comes up with. Already planning out the jetpack!
This is seems like this would also make an amazing base to make different styles of arms. I really enjoyed this and this could be very useful.
You are so creative! So enjoy your videos!
Awesome! I just downloaded the pattern for the arm. Now waiting for part deux of the video! ;-)
Now thats what i call quality content
That is awesome. I have a messed up right arm so I would love to make one of these.

"... Otherwise you'll end up with...a messy, messy thing."
😭😭😭
He's seen all my cosplay attempts😭😭😭😂😂😂
Looks like your whole family has fun with these projects!!!
So glad I found this channel. Sir you are one very talented individual.
Thank you kindly!
This looks amazing man, I love seeing your videos. I think it would look amazing if you did a sorta steam punk shoulder pad cannon kinda thing it would be a huge video but if anyone could do it you could. Keep up the great work.
I usually hate the often overly busy steampunk aesthetic, but you put together a really nice design and the way you present the whole thing is very pleasant to look at, even cinematic. Really glad I've found your channel.
Cool, that's great feedback, I do try to design pieces so that they incorporate a decorative element, as well as mechanical workings- but they kind of have to make sense as to why they would actually be there. Sometimes it's hard to get the right balance.
WHY DON'T YOU HAVE AT LEAST TWO MILLION SUBS, YOU DESERVE EVERY ONE!!!!
Hehe, thanks! Keep sharing my vids and maybe one day....
oh yeah thank you so much !! I've been waitting for this!!
This is amazing dude! Love your channel
Wonderful productions! I love you instructions, but I'm also impressed with the total production of some your vids, like this one! Thanks for sharing!
Haha, even an idea for a homemade light box (effect)! Excellent!
Excellent video. You are one talented dude! And your prices are very reasonable. Especially the all-inclusive package. Thnx.
Very nicely done. Great tutorial.
I'm making a steampunk arm and it's going really well! I'll be following your projects in the future!
cool, glad it's working for you!
Awesome Steampunk arm!
First off GREAT work. You have amazing talent. I am inspired and excited to make this my first foam build.
I just bought both templates and I am surprised. I expected to pay more!
I hope many more people purchase your templates. You deserve every penny you put into your work.
Thank you.
That's great to hear! I am glad you found the templates a good value. I am always trying to balance affordability with the fact that this is my business and I need to pay the bills:) Thanks for the feedback!
I love this channel and it’s narrative
Loving the intro!
This man is a gift
Will definitely be putting this on my list, ive only made your top hat and goggles so far but i want to eventually make them all. Thanks heaps for making them so easy to follow. Big thumbs up from me 👍
Super cool dude, well done!
I'M SO HAPPY I AM ABOUT TO CRY!! THIS MADE MY DAY!! I've waited so long for this video
Chris, you're awesome.
Great untie! Keep up the good work.
I'm making this for my steam punk costume, it is pretty fun to build! :) Thank you for this awesome pattern that is by the way really cheap!!
Éric Langlais
How do you get the pattern is there a website?
Bro did you buy the blueprints/pattern ??
Yay I missed these!!
You are great at this! Thank you for all this work and dedication. I really enjoy your videos!
My pleasure!
Asylum Steampunk festival had quite a few of these this year, probably the most popular design we saw!
So happy I bought the everything bundle months ago! I love these creations. :D
I can't wait to make these ones once I get my hands on some foam and hole punches. xD.
~Hope you have a wonderful day. ^^
I love how you said "be sure to not cut your fingers off" so peacefuly
THAT'S THE COOL ROBOT ARM STEAMPUNK BABY I WISH I HAD THAT!
This is an awesome video and tutorial!! I freaking love it
FANTÁSTICO TRABAJO!!!!
Awesome intro and tutorial :)
for transferring design patterns you can also "pinhole" it instead of making indentations with a pen
Good call.
Trying to cosplay as Aleena and I want her to look more futuristic than the tv show version. Thanks for the video 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Awesome!
wouahou! géniallll! j'adore! merciiii!
how durable is the foam? Like will it rip and break really easily with movement? Man the detail and finish of this is CRAZY good.
cweb1988 EVA foam is super durable, light, and cheap. It will not rip or tear, unless you're trying to do so.
you can use the lost foam method and make this out of copper or aluminum.
These are so cool
That opening sequence was fantastic! (Was the Pete and Pete reference intentional?) You must have a background in cinematography. ❤️
Thanks! No, it wasn't intentional, in fact, I don't really know anything about Pete and Pete. I'd love to know what the reference in my video is:) I don't have a background in cinematography, I just love to play around with cameras and lights:) Have a super amazing day!
Woooowwwww this is AWESOOOME!!!
This is so amazing.
Love it!
Seriously thought, you are amazing. Very very helpful :D
His intro's are the best tbh
Your amazing and you guys make me smile.
You just made me smile:)
I'm definitely going to use this base form to build my fantasy knight arm harness, thank you good sir
Nice! Just so you know, I am going to be releasing a knight armour pattern in the next week or two, if that might also be helpful for you....
@@LostWax assuming you mean a chest piece, or a full cuirass, either one would be helpful, also you usually use some kind of floormats, which makes everything so much cheaper, so thank you
@@LostWax do you remember how many floormats, or how much roll mat you used for the main arm elbow and upper arm, or a rough estimate
I LOVE what u make :)
Hello Chris, is the painting technique video ready ?
hello, can you get the cut pattern? How long would it take?
This looks great!
I am currently doing a robotic arm for a cosplay (I'm doing Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist, I'll do only the forearm and the hand though, the rest will be hidden by the clothes) so i find it interesting to see how you're doing it.
I just have one question however: I've seen a lot of people use a heat gun to bend shapes when they work with foam, but you manage to do great pieces without it. Have you ever worked with a heat gun? If yes, is it then easier to work without it?
Nice!
You are amazing.
At this point I have a full steam punk robot/plague Doctor costume ready for Halloween
Cool!
Just purchased the 34. package. Love em
Nice!! Glad you like them, have fun making!
Dude your amazing
Good job, what a beauty. Looks like a good retirement project.
What kind of foam was that and how would I size down the arm for a smaller arm???
Pretty neat man. This would be a project for my little brother n i
I Love the intro xD !! GG Men
I like this tutorial video friend
AWESOME!
Thanks!
Is there any particular reason for not using Barge cement? That stuff holds so much better than hot glue. Great tutorial!
I agree, Barge is the strongest thing out there, however, the fumes are not something you want to breathe, and as I cannot control how well people ventilate their spaces, and there are lots of kids making my patterns, I would rather recommend supplies that are less toxic if I can. I have actually been very surprised at how well hot glue actually works once you get used to the techniques. I think I actually prefer it over contact cement now. The other great thing is that if you want to change something, you can use your glue gun or a heat gun to reheat the section and take it apart.
That seems a perfectly reasonable explanation! I tend to do all my gluing outside because of exactly that. Great job on the video!
Yeah, I used to do my gluing outside too.....until I moved back to Canada. Not that much fun when it's -40 outside:)
Also do you have an episode talking about how you make patterns, and if not can you?
I would like to do something like that sometime. It's just a bit tricky as a lot of it is trial and error. But there definitely are some techniques that would be helpful for people.
I want to know how to get the patterns 2
Hey Chris, what thickness foam did you use for the bigger parts? Is it okay if I used a 12mm foam for my arm since it's smaller?
I used 6mm foam. You can probably use thicker foam, might just need a little tweaking.
Just epic :D
Love your videos sir
I'm really surprised with your patterns prices! Its quite cheap for that amount of effort you put in it. Gotta buy at least one, so amazing AAAAAAHH
It's always nice to hear from people who see the value in my patterns:) I try to keep them as accessible as possible while still earning a living. Thanks for watching!
This is perfect work 👍👍👍😊
Thanks!
Hey, i could try something like that but im really begginer and i need advice. Which shall i use EVA 2mm, 5mm or 10mm, what is difference? Can foam be too thin for shoulder for example?
And did you notice some difference in density? I found 11 g/cm3 and 9 g/cm3 and that 2nd one is cheaper.
Hi there, I would recommend the 5mm foam for this main part of this project, and the 2mm foam wherever I use the thinner foam. The denser the foam the better. It'll make it stronger.
Thank you :)
Great tutorial! Very clear and easy to follow steps to really help beginners like me, great job. Quick question, how thick is the eva foam you are using? The one I use is pretty thick so I'm concerned it wont bend as easily and don't want to waste foam committing just yet. Thanks in advanced!
The foam I use in this is 5-6mm (depending if you measure to the top of the bumps or the bottom) It comes in a big roll that's enough to make many products. I have an example of what I am talking about on my product page here: www.lostwaxoz.com/product-links/
Awesome! Thanks a bunch, keep up the great work!
