      Punished Props Academy hey guys, you can buy wearable wire jackets (I sadly don't know the english name for them) that you then can adjust to your body. There are even electrical ones that heat up and selfform to your body. These things are reusable, readjustable and way faster than creating a dummy for every person you want to create something for. Maybe this is something you want to look into.

    Sorry, if you apply the duct tape in a criss cross pattern over the chest and back (male or female) makes for a more defined form. Also making registration marks on the back prior to cutting. Which Brit did mention makes for easier closing of the form. Thanks for video PP and E&K. You can also stick a hole in the bottom and display on a pic pipe for a standing form.

    To get a more rigid form (useful when working with more rigid materials like armour) fill with builders foam, you can then peel off the tape and sand (and fill if needed) to get a really smooth surface

  • @thelmabirt7626

    Wrapping the body loosely in plastic wrap works in lieu of an old tshirt. You can build the form up the neck more, down the arm better, and lower on the hips. I put a long thin piece of craft foam down the back for cutting it off the body. It makes your model more comfortable knowing the scissors will hit that prior to their skin. Expanding foam works great as stuffing. Gives a more rigid form to pull patterns off of.

    I tried all sorts of filler material, expanding foam (this makes it heaver and could expand the duct tape out), newspaper (shredded and crumpled), shredded foam, packing peanuts... the best material is the batting you stuff quilts/pillows with. You can get it for cheap, use coupons, and you can fill all cracks with it to make it sturdy. I also built a PVC frame to go on the inside so it would stand like a regular dress dummy.

    • @Dsk001
      @Dsk001 Před 5 lety

      Have you tried several types of expanding foam? From their nerf dart video I saw theres a few avaiable maybe some of the quishier foam would work well and just leave one opening unclosed so it wouldn't expand the duct tape.

      hi costume kid

  • @theinvisiblequeen
    @theinvisiblequeen Před 5 lety +3

    I've been doing this method either as a Body Double, the basis for a corset pattern or as the start of a perfect fitting pattern (especially when its something different like a historic or fantasy/sf costume), so this method is so versatile.
    and I wear the bra I plan to wear under the costume during this process, and I usually start with a foundation strip, under the breasts, going completely around the body (one strip, overlapping at the end) smooth, not tight. then, you will find that makes a good sticking spot (duct tape only sticks to itself). so in the front, go between the breasts, up over the shoulder (like a bra does) and stick to the back of the foundation strip.
    this forms a much better and more defined breast area (like a good bra). then wrap one layer around the body, slightly overlapping each.
    A whole upper body wrap has never taken me more than 1 roll of tape, maximum.
    I've found that I use strips that fit a section at a time. so, like from under the breasts and armpit and around the body to the back where a previous course of tape comes over the shoulders.
    hope that helps someone.

Speaking of which, is it a good idea to try and get as close to the body dimensions as possible (skin tight shirt, nothing underneath) or should you have a little air like Kaitlyns dummy has with the two looser shirts?

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  Před 5 lety +2

      There are a few reasons a duct tape dummy can come apart. Over time duct tape will stretch a little bit if it's really firmly stuffed. That can cause the adhesion to lose strength and come apart. If the tape is exposed to heat over time that will also wear it down. Duct tape, while very strong, isn't permanent! the material you have under the duct tape (i.e. a shirt, plastic wrap, or tin foil) can contribute to the overall strength of the dummy as well. Plastic wrap is more likely to tear than a shirt, for example. The number of layers is also a factor - too many layers and it won't have the right measurements, but too few and it can come apart too easily.
      Hope that helps!
      - Paige

    Duct tape dummies are also made for fursuits and use sweatpants and sweatshirt or long john underwear top and bottom to make a full body fursuit then it gets sent to the fursuit maker. =^.^=

    Is it solid? I'm just thinking couldn't you just fill the thing with a plaster mixture from say a 25lb bag for 12$ and seal off the neck and sleeves.

    Question (which you likely won't see ... ): in the helmet display behind you, second shelf, second cube from the left, the plate-style mask. Do you have a pattern for that one?

    If I wrap my head in tape, how do I flatten that out to make pattern pieces? Other patterns for lucha masks only have a seam around the crown and through the middle of the face/head. Flattening that side piece would be impossible?

    I want to make a full suit in this method to see if I can basically make a manikin of myself. Is there a simple way to make a head in the same way? And is there anything else I can fill it with to make it sturdy so it doesn't fall apart, but flexible enough to bend at the joints?

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  Před 5 lety

      We recommend an alginate or silicone life cast. You could cast a copy of the head in a lightweight expanding urethane foam.

    Wearing painters overalls is a good (and cheap) alternative to ruining a shirt. You can also leave the zipper uncovered so you can unzip your subject most of the way out of their duct tape prison haha

    Seems like a minor detail, but I noticed on her left arm, the tape was wrapped at the size of the sleeve, and on her right arm it was more snug fit to her arm(folding the sleeve under it a bit). Which would you recommend as the best option?

    can I somehow fill a cut form with extensive foam that is poured into and grow to that shape?

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  Před 4 lety +1

      You can! You just want to be careful with your amounts and make sure your tape form is very sturdy, as the force from the expansion could rip or warp the tape.

    does it matter what size the t-shirt is? Does it have to be lose or very tight?

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  Před 5 lety

      A T-shirt that fits comfortably or somewhat tight is your best bet. Too tight and it will be very difficult to cut off and may warp the shape once you remove it. Too loose and you'll end up with a lot of bunched up fabric that will alter the shape/fit.
