    I've watched a ton of concrete pathways using a stamp. You are the first to go step by step and say how much concrete is needed for each stamp. You showed everything that is needed and pretty much how it will cost to do my job. Thank you for a very well done video! I can't wait to start my project!

    My parents used the same type of form when they did their walkways in the back yard, but my mom wanted all the stones to be different colors, so they wouldn't look so "concretey". She went to a grocery warehouse store and bought large bottles of food coloring. She brought them home and poured each color into a spray bottle. While the concrete was stilll wet she sprayed each stone with any combination of food colorings. Its been about 20 years, and though the colors are not as vibrant as they once were, they have retained a lot of the color and they still look really good. Those food color bottles are still available at Smart & Final for about $4 per 8 oz bottle.

      Hi Bombshelly. That's very interesting. I've never heard that before. But I guess any kind of pigment could give concrete some coloring. Next time I'm mixing some concrete, I think I'll give that a try to see how it comes out. Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

    • @jdgardensnj4563
      @jdgardensnj4563  Před rokem +10

      @@jouforward4609 Hi Jou. Yes, coloring concrete can be a very nice option but remember it can be unusually expensive depending on how much you're making. As far as the colorfast, it does hold its color pretty well over the years. If you're planning on trying to use any kind of glaze, make sure that it's not too slippery because you wouldn't want it to get slick when it rains. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

    What I like about this system is you don't have to commit a whole day or weekend to the project. You can just do 2-3 bags at a time on busy days, more on slow days. If you use a trough for mixing the concrete, the cleanup time is probably 10 minutes. You can also avoid those super-hot or cold days. Keep the bags of cement dry, and the project can be done over weeks with little mess in the yard.

    I've done this path. Its really fun. I've added to it over the years, making different curves and turns. I also made a couple forms on an old piece of plastic on the driveway. That way, I have individual pieces to fill in if needed. My path is over 20 years old and had held up great. I'm near Buffalo, New York and the cold has not affected it at all. Have fun.

    I used a similar form about 25 years ago to do a walkway on 2 sides of the house .. around 11 linear meters (+- 36 feet) long x 1.5 meters (59") wide. Took me a few months, (young kids, rain, household duties) and mixed in a trough. Just me, myself and I 😺 .. I like doing that type of work, so not complaining just stating that even one little lady can do the job in case someone finds the thought overwhelming .. You Can Do It!!
    I dug, installed concrete borders first plus a little sand and gravelbto even out the base. I used concrete to fill halfway up the spaces in-between where you used topsoil. It still looks good except a section in front where I believe the earth shifted over time with the help of roots, freezes. Oh, by the way, I'm 5'2", similar build to your wife. I live in the Paris suburbs and brought my frame back from a US visit in my luggage. We didn't have them here at that time. Looks like you have a nice large yard, will go check out your other videos . Thx, Alysen

    Yeah this is exactly what I was thinking about. You know I'm an out-of-shape sixty-year-old but this is perfect. I could just do a few bags and then take a nap and then a do a few more bags. Lol
    Thanks. I plan on installing above ground pool. Trying to do everything inexpensively but nice. Thanks again. This would be great as a walkway around the pool.

    • @jdgardensnj4563
      @jdgardensnj4563  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Doron: Your message made us both laugh. :-) Those 80 lb bags do take a toll on the bones. But like anything, after you do a few of them, you kind of build up your own rhythm and it becomes easier. As far as using the WalkMaker around your pool, be sure to use a concrete with more Portland and less aggregate. You'll want to make the top as smooth as possible so it will be easier on bare feet, as people get out of the pool. Just take your time and tap down any aggregate that's too close to the surface the way Jackie showed in the video. Hope it comes out great - be sure to let us know how it goes. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

      We just moved to Florida. We are just trying to figure out a design of things.
      Now I'm looking into screens how to develop a screen around the pool and walkway. It's not going to happen for a while but I'll send you a link to when I finish. I better do this before the grandkids get too old. Lol

    Man, really convincing argument on buying VS renting a mixer. I do everything by myself, mixing, transporting, and laying my DIY projects in the yard. • @jdgardensnj4563
      @jdgardensnj4563  Před rokem

      Hi @chrisblanco8923: Thanks for the comment. Absolutely! If you do alot of work with concrete, a cement mixer is totally worth it! The amount of time and energy spent is definitely worth $300. And actually, that goes with any kind of tool that you're going to be using for a long period of time. We've been replacing all the fence on our property and renting an auger for the whole day is like $89 at HD but buying one is just a little over $200 and I get to work at my own pace ... so it's a no-brainer. But we're glad you enjoyed the video. Remember that the Walk Maker comes in different styles, if County Stone (the one that we have in our garden) is not for you, there's a few other styles that Quikrete makes that we have in links to in the description below. Also, be sure to follow-up video, which is a Q&A from viewers like you - I think you'll find it very helpful: czcams.com/video/B_KhPoNfRU4/video.html . You can check it out here: czcams.com/video/B_KhPoNfRU4/video.html . Also, last year we redid the planter beds in Garden East and had to change the path around but we reused the existing stones. You might want to check that video out too: czcams.com/video/aWTEBTSUNJA/video.html . We'll also probably be doing another video this year showing how to turn corners and make curves with the Walk Maker so keep an eye out for that. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

      Hi @nikkidee0411: Thanks for the comment. Yes, it really is a great DIY project. But we noticed in your comment, that you said "stamp". A stamp for concrete is different than a mold or template. The Walk Maker mold is something that you pour concrete into and it creates individual stones, like pavers. A stamp is something that you press down into an already poured body of concrete that will just leave an impression on the surface. Either one are great options but there is a difference in the process. I hope this made sense - if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

    Wow I really like that cement walkway, thank you for giving me that idea 💡. I am however concerned about you inhaling the dust from that cement, inhaling that over time can cause emphysema or other respiratory condition, do you know that is why chalk boards were replaced, the dust from the chalk board was causing respiratory problems as well as triggering asthma. So please wear a mask when mixing cement, we want you around for a long, long time.😜😃

  • @mysticmeadowshomestead6209

    I think it looks like 'crazy pavement,' with the one exception of not having colored pavers. IOW, each time your wife is filling in a form, a side bucket could have enough cement in it (taken from the main mixture) and enough cement color (for example, red) to add one red paver per form. Each time she lays a form a different paver could be selected from the last selected paver to be the red one. That would add visual interest. And I would suggest a two-bucket system: one red and one yellow. Each form would have a yellow and a red and then, ofc(ourse), seven 'regular' stones. Make sure that the red and yellow look randomly placed. The advantage in coloring the cement mixture over painting stain would come years from now when you have to pressure wash the grime that inevitably comes to all cement pavers. Stain would be pressure washed away, but the color in the cement mixture would be like a 'real' crazy pavement in which the homeowner paid top dollar to have an actual different colored stone scattered randomly (that's why they're called 'crazy').
