Planning your Canna Garden 2022 ... Prepping Garden East
* * * * Those weed killers cause diseases like the big C.. lung problems etc. .. A better idea might be 'MULCH GLUE: it'll lock down that dirt and prevent anything from taking root. You will also be able to use a blower, to clean the walkway, without the dirt blowing out and all over the place. I would spray it along the edge lines also. I'm doing my path with small crushed stone/pebbles, and the Mulch Glue locks them in for years and dries clear.. it's is also used to spray the mulch on the edges of flowerbeds so the weed eater strings don't throw the mulch all over.. I have to say, your garden is sooo beautiful. I love love love canna.. and the white fence just lights up all the colors. Your stone pathway is adorable. this is the kind of place I like to spend time, just sitting and taking it all in and letting the beauty fill my heart.. so peaceful.. thanks for sharing this video guys.. =D
I guess I will make a cover out of cardboard or an old campaign sign made out of corrugated cardboard.
This is lovely and the flowers are so pretty.those birds talking add serene to the video.
I have learned so much from you in this video. Thank you so much 😊❤
Definitely a good idea

Few yrs ago I used my Dremmel, it quick and super easy.
Hi @LilBitJo . Thanks for reaching out to us. Funny story about using a dremel ... when I used to try that, if I didn't hold the canna seeds in the pliers tight enough, the seeds would go flying all over the garage, lol. Still finding them to this day. ;-) Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan
Lmao oh yes me too. I tried the needle nose, and lost so many.. So I got brave, but carefully just hold them in my finger tips. Yes I've dremeled a finger couple times till I got the hang of it.. But one question still remains. Where is the best spot on the seed to scar it? Side or tip? I usually do the side, with success, and sometimes on the end/top, with success.
I hold seed with my fingers and rub across sandpaper on end of seed and works the charm. 😁🌱
Now you'll have a beautiful marigold bouquet 💐 Thank you. This was a very informative video!

Hi @goldriderlc . Thanks for reaching out to us. Glad to hear your Alaska canna is doing well. Funny, we just made a video about our Alaska canna just a few days ago. Was wondering, can’t you do that polymeric jointing sand then on top of it sweep dirt in and pack it in like in the video to prevent weeds deep in the cracks and then cure it all together? Or cure the jointing sand but pack it in for the form, cure it, and then sweep dirt over it?
Hi @theexcitinglight1227 . Thanks for the comment. You could do that but it doesn't matter how little amount of dirt you have, weeds will still grow. But it is an interesting idea so that the roots wouldn't go too deep into the ground - more surface level weeds. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan
@@jdgardensnj4563 cool cool, thanks for replying. you think the polymeric jointing sand could be colored?
Hi I have a rabbit nest on my lawn with babies. I have not seen the mom in a few days and worry she might have abandoned them or isomething happen to her. I left them some grapes and lettuce near the next. I didn't touch them but do occasionally move the dead leaves and grass that is covering the hole just to check in on them. And then Cover them back up. Please advise what is the best way to deal with this
Hi @user-mf5nf8su7f . Thanks for reaching out to us. We actually made a video on what to do if you find a rabbit's nest in your garden. You can check it out here: czcams.com/video/NLiuNTcKoP8/video.htmlsi=GtO_L8ZLwDTvqyel . And don't want to bury the lead ... the most important thing is to do NOTHING. And when they're that young, they won't be able to eat solid food. After watching the video and you're sure that the mother is not coming back, you can always check with your town's ASPCA or animal shelter, if they take them in. Good Luck! Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan
Wow! Your Cannas are in high demand! Great quality, healthy plants...❤👍🏽

How much did you purchase that bin?
Hi @milagroslluisma3153 . Thanks for reaching out to us. We paid $360 a few years ago. But we just saw it on Amazon for cheaper (as of today, 6/9/24) for $339. You can check the link in the description in the video. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan
I am in Michigan with a zone 6. People here have told me they never overwinter theirs. They just leave them in the ground, cover with mulch and they come back. I do this with my dahlias and they come back stronger every year! I have done the same with my gladiolas for ten years! They multiply like crazy! I wonder if my cannas would do the same if I leave them in the ground. I tried to overwinter my glads and they all died despite my best efforts.
Hi @HYTELES . Thanks for the comment. Yes, cannas can survive over the winter ... but you take a chance that they may not make it. That's why we always dig them up. But every now and then we miss some and come Spring, they pop back up again without any protection. But still, for us, we wouldn't want to take a chance on losing them. Thanks for reaching out and thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan
Nice garden! This was great to see all the varieties in one video!

Thanks, I'll check out the video you suggested
this looks amazing. is there any base prep at all? Do any of those things you showed in the paver diagram have to go down before you do these, and if not, wouldn't these settle over time? thanks so much for the video
Hi @AliBubba. Thanks for reaching out to us. No, you don't need the same ground prep that you do with traditional pavers. That's the beauty of the Walk Maker. It is truly a DIY project with very little surface prep. The only things you really have to do is remove any plant life and moderately level the ground, like I show in the video. The Walk Maker template forms to all the imperfections on the ground to give you a nice flat surface. If you're interested in doing this, be sure to watch out Follow Up video, which is a Q&A from viewers like you. You can see it here: czcams.com/video/B_KhPoNfRU4/video.htmlsi=TEfgq1pxu6W2ZsIk . Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan
Shouldn’t you be wearing a mask? Too much of powder clouds around you.
Hi @msingh1181 . Thanks for reaching out. Trust me, Dan always wears a mask when working with concrete. He just didn't do it for the video because you wouldn't be able to understand him. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

Hi @goldriderlc . Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks for the comment. Yes, it is and we just uploaded another short about 2 hours ago, showing how well they're doing. :-) Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan
I live in Texas zone 8a and I never dig up my Canna like you do but maybe I should.🤔
Hi @goldriderlc . Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks for the comment. Not sure how cold your winters get but if we leave them in the ground, we run the risk of losing them and we wouldn't want to take that chance. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan
After starting 30 seeds i just planted 12, some of the others seem to be germinating, but i dont see the larvae yet, in the past ive gad none germinating at all, this year i used double filtered water and so far about 40% success after 5 days
Hi @aaronreaka9024 . Thanks for reaching out to us. I'm assuming by "larvae" you mean the white part that grows out of the seeds when germinating - that's called the embryo. Canna seeds can be tricky. It's important that you have a good score on them to allow the embryo to grow out. Our suggestion to people is to do small batches at a time so you don't waste your seeds all at once, as you're getting your technique down. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan
@@jdgardensnj4563 got 18 planted, ended up at 67% success with 11 plants!!
I used this for a driveway pad. We poured the concrete for the driveway pad, tgen while it was still wet, pushed the form down about 1 inch into the cement. It formed the stone look but did not compromised the integrity of the driveway pad. I has lasted 30 years so far. A little wear and tear but that is expected with concrete. We lived in an area that temperatures would get to negative 10 with lots of snow. It handled the snowblower as well.
Have you thought about planting Iris Moss between the stones?
Hi @sybilmayo415 . Thanks for reaching out to us. We get that question alot. And yes, I think it would look amazing but probably more in a rustic or natural pathway setting. We have raised planter beds of pressure treated wood and I'm afraid that that look would just be out of place for us. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan
I harvested seed pods from my red canna lillies last yr. I’m curious to know how to tell what healthy canna Lilly seeds look like? I noticed in your video yours were all black. Mine varies in color. Does it matter what color the seeds are if they’ve been harvested from the same plant? Mine are black, brown Or mustard in color. Can all of them still be used? Or does the color of them indicate their usability? I’m assuming ones whose shells are wrinkly or wavy aren’t viable? Am I correct in my assumption?
Hi @0dysyeestanhope-wilkerson612 . Thanks for reaching out to us. Yes, the only seeds that would be viable are the black ones. As far as the brown seeds or mustard colored seeds, you either harvested them too early or maybe at the end of the season when the frost came in and the cannas were dying and their seeds weren't finished forming yet. From our experience, those seeds are not viable. And you would be correct - if they look like a raisin, throw them out. ;-) If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan
I ordered a Alaska Canna
Hi @goldriderlc . Sorry for the delayed response. Thank you so much for the order and thank you for your support. Jackie and Dan
I use cardboard strips. You can shape them any way you wish and make them any size. I just shape them and clip them shut with small clamps.
HOW IS IT COMERCIALLY
Hi @francor.4881 . Thanks for reaching out. We don't use it commercially but we have gotten quite a few people commenting that they use it commercially and it works great! They mention that you should just keep the blade sharp. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan
Thanks for the great instructions in your video of using a templete and concrete for your walkway. This will help a lot of people avoid mistakes and discouragement.
I have a muddy back yard due to line of trees blocking the sun and preventing normal grass growth. I was thinking of adding a walking/ stepping path - using 16 in x 16 in pavers or 12 in x 12 in (maybe pair pavers in parallel) but they wouldnt have to be connected... they could have a space between each one for normal walking gait. I would have to lay gravel underneath. But if i or future owner ever wanted to remove the paver path to put something else down such as a shed or dog agility course or koi pond etc/ whatever... it would be easy to remove the pavers. But im thinking the one drawback to doing a long connected walkmaker path is it would be a nightmare to remove the path in the future of desired??
Hi @roberthall590 . Thanks for reaching out to us. Actually, it's alot simpler than you think. The blocks are not connected to each other so it's not like a long concrete slab. You can remove any individual stone after it's pressed. We actually did a video where we redid Garden East and we re-used the stones. You can see that video here: czcams.com/video/aWTEBTSUNJA/video.htmlsi=9_NUelAgE71Hlbds . So it would be as easy as pulling out the stones and throwing them in a wheelbarrow. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan
Thank you. 😊
You're welcome 😊
I like the way the soil looks between the concrete stones ❤
They look so cute
Hi @milalodge364 . Thanks for reaching out. Yes, they were very cute but also very loud. ;-) Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan
Just ordered a Alaska Canna I live in zone 8a in Dallas Texas . This will make my 11th different canna I own now.
Hi @goldrideric, thank for reaching out! Be careful they can become addictive, we have over 70 varieties and always looking for more! :) Thanks for watching, Jackie & Dan
Just got my Alaska Canna Lily in today looks super healthy quick delivery . I am very happy with J&D Gardens. We'll be ordering more plants for sure .I appreciate the extra bonus Aferican Marigold seeds I will definitely be planting them.
My 7 Plus year old GTS Toro did that starting thing today. First start.
Hi, I love your green house and long greenhouse trough boxes. But using heating cables in the winter time without insulating the bottom of your long greenhouse trough boxes is also trying to heat Mother Nature as well. If you line the bottom of the long troughs with something like 1.5 inch Owens Corning Insulation Foam cut to size, you will notice an enormous increase in the over all trough soil temperatures because the ground will not draw the heat out of the troughs from the bottom. Try lying in the ground in the winter time without an insulation mat you'll see what I mean.
I notice your in NJ I'm in Ohio when does your planting season generally start?
Hi @ernestfultz6159 . Sorry for the delayed response. Well, we start growing everything early in our greenhouse. But we don't plant in the ground till around May 20th, sometimes earlier - depending on the last frost. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan
My Momma loved Cannas! This will be amazing! It already looks so beautiful
Hi @MotleyShrew-iz9ms . Sorry for the delayed response. Glad you enjoyed the video. You can check out our full Walk Through videos on our channel under the heading Garden Walk Throughs from past years and keep an eye out for our 2024 Garden East Walk Through video, which will be sometime in late July. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan
@@jdgardensnj4563 TYSM! I sure will!
Looks great thanks! I might just buy a concrete mixer after watching this.
Hi @angelaevans6649 . Sorry for the delayed response. If you plan on doing ALOT of concrete, it is an invaluable tool. It'll save you a TON of work...and probably a lot cheaper than renting it. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan
Thank you for sharing this video! I have been dreaming of a backyard patio. I have 2 questions: 1) My backyard is slanted. How do I ensure proper drainage? 2) Whete did you get your mold? In advance, thank you for your time and assistance. Blessings!
Hi @exceptionaleventsbyelisa1931 . Sorry for the delayed response. It really is a great DIY project. As far as your question on slanting, that won't be a problem. The mold follows the contours of the ground. So it will go along with the slant. The key is to make sure your concrete mixture isn't that soupy, so that when you pull the mold off, the blocks stay formed. As far as where to find it, you can get them at Home Depot or Lowes or we have links to all of them in the video description. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan
