- I wanted to be able to control my Fiio X5 with an inline remote but still be able to use my headphones of choice. So I made my own controls.
The standard for inline controls is so simple that I seriously cannot believe that this isn't a thing already. Please, feel free to look and prove me wrong! - Věda a technologie
I get a lot of questions about my headphone cable with the microphone built in. Here is what I use: amzn.to/2N98Eca
Should not be some capacitors there... to filter the "false bits" of the swiches @Tech Tangents By AkBkukU?
Ooooooooh this gives me an idea:
Atiny85, a rotary encoder, two mosfets for volume and the rotary encoder switch for the play/pause. Rotary dial volume control.
About the Google app being all too eager to pop up - you need contact debouncing, the phone is interpreting your single tap as multiple taps.
ah, I didn't know that was a feature. I have a reel of 100nF caps, I can throw some on it that should fix that then.
As far as I know, there are 2 main standards for those inline volume controls, which are the Apple standard (used on Apple's own wired earphones, iPhone, iPod (nano 4th gen and shuffle 3rd gen and later), Mac, iPad, etc) and then what I call the Android standard (Android devices, obviously, but I think it's also supported on Windows Phone, and any PC whose sound hardware supports inline volume controls).
there is a old nokia standard where mic and one of the channels are switched around
Yeah, it's true. Like always, there's an "Apple Standard" and an "Everybody Else's" standard!
apple standard will work on (at least some) android devices. i used some apple earbuds i got on my old phone (may have been the one before that, cant remember), and they worked a treat. I do know that the pin-mapping on apple and android differ sometimes though. i bought some audio equipment off amazon a while back, and one headphone splitter did not work at all, but worked fine in my friends phone, and the other worked fine in both. A headphone/microphone splitter didn't work at all in my phone, and it constantly tries to volume up in my new windows phone. i haven't tried the splitters in my new phone yet though
Apple's standard is also used on some Nokia phones. It's just the normal standard with the mic and ground contacts switched.
@@thecow2756 it's mic and ground that are swapped out
just a tip for anyone watching, those perf boards are extremely easy to cut. All you have to do is score one side with a razor blade to a reasonable depth and break it at the line on the side of a table or whatever. The fiberglass breaks cleanly on the score line leaving at most a few seconds of filing or sanding with an emery board.
Quick! Design a PCB and housing and make money!
(Or release under open source hardware stuff for extra niceness)
Seeing Vangelis' Spiral being played on your phone totally made me geek out- nice to see someone who shares the same musical taste, as well as hobbies!
I know the closest thing was the Griffin "iCommand", but that was specifically designed to plug in to an iPod Shuffle 3rd generation.
Speaking of proprietary remotes, I always liked the ones by Sony. They all looked stylish and some of them even had LCD displays.
I'm glad you did this hopefully I'll be able to reproduce this one day for myself thank you for the great videos
Funnily enough, Fiio used to sell more or less what you're looking for. The E02i "Rocky" Headphone amp is a decentish headphone amp with inline controls.
That's interesting. I really don't want an amp as well though(There are better amp options for the X5 but I'm fine with the internal). Too bad it's for iphone and not something that is natively supported on their own products.
Obviously I haven’t finished the video, but so far I’m enjoying it. Interesting project.
How is this not a product? I too have a need for one of these
There's replacement cables with inline mic and buttons for some headphones you can buy off the usual places like ali and fleabay (I even have one, for an ath-m50x, but I've seen them for various headphones). You could buy one of those and chop off the end that goes in the headphone, place a female jack on it... Or even just get a headset with controls and do that.
The Pleasure Principle is a great album
I'm still using my 13-years old samsung headset cable to add a in-line remote to every headphone i've got. The only thing i had to do is figuring out the pinout (8 individual wires) and replace the old proprietary connector with a 3.5mm jack.
Just like the walkman controllor!👍👍👍
nice prototyping bro, i love how it's all really shitty but it works
I wish I could remember the name but I bought the exact product at a local Walmart over 10 years ago in the Clearance section, it was a very short dongle (probably only 3-5 inches long, like half of the final result in your video) that had male on one end, a 3 button control (volume up, down, and play/pause) in the middle, and female on the other end. It didn't work well since the dongle would plug into the bottom of your headphone cable being basically right next to your phone/MP3 player in your pocket instead of being next to your head like a built-in one, at that point might as well just use your phone itself. It might have worked better if the cable was longer but then you would have a big mess of cables.
Hooray for the MDR-7506!
Nice video 👍
I got idea for my diy headphones
Please tell me which 3 resister you used in this video
I have no idea about resister
I had no idea that these used resistor values for each button. That is actually how most car steering wheel controls work as well.
is this appropriate that I'm watching right after video in which the guy added headphone jack to iphone? just thinking that you'll skip the "making it fit inside" part :)
I think on devices like the 6P or even the Surface, it sends a 'beep' along the mic line. Noticed when I had headphones/mic set to 'listen through this device', when I tapped the button it beeped.
How can I add microphone, switch in. And new earphone. Please I need it
For volume your could have used a potentiometer! Would work in any sound device. And u can sand the plug to make it fit better.
I am wondering, if i am on a call, this short that the button makes in the microphone, does affect the sound that is being captured by the microphone ?
I mess around with headphones much but never found the answer.
It probably does affect the quality. Otherwise the phone would not be able to tell that something happened.
I've seen tons of the male-male cables that do that, but no male-female cables like that. If anyone finds it, the search is definately still on. I'm even hoping for one that does it all.
I routinely make male to female 3 band stereo 'extension' cords for my headphones.
0:52 Vagelis' Spiral; nice!
Nokia shipped a separate inline remote which works with any headphones with their N900 mobile Internet device, but I don't think it uses the CTIA standard.
Memorex had a product out that pretty much did what your custom control setup is meant to do. I actually had one, but it didn't work
iPod Video?
I had this cable from the ericson brand many years ago
The logitech Artemis headphones uses a dual male setup (similar to the system your now broken ever everyday ones you showed) and has inline controls. Finding a deplacement cable could be an option, instead of this.
I made this for volume up and down with 220ohm(for up) and 560ohm(down) volume
It's work perfectly
But when I connect mic then suddenly volume pusing down and stil there.
Why I don't understand
Please help me to solve this.
And thanks
Are you not loosing a ton of audio quality doing this? shielding? impedance? eevblog might have a field day with this one. Now everything is wireless anyways. Cool project though. Never knew how those buttons really worked, now I know. Thanks!
I could have sworn I have seen such adapters in the past (and I mean many years ago, way before this video was made ;P) but I can't remember where I saw it, or if it was really a 4-connector thing on the male end, or just an inline volume wheel...
Seems the closest thing I can find on ebay is this www.ebay.com/itm/In-Line-Remote-Adapter-for-iPod-Shuffle-Nano-w-Volume-Control-Headphone-Cable/142688402671
Which only has volume buttons, no pause.
What kind of soldering is that? So ugly, even though it does work.
I tried to do this/have been trying to do this for the past like 10? years one of two stupid things Apple dead among many others was that they used the furthest connection on the TRRS connection for video and then subsequently audio microphone which causes just about any headset with the TRS Jack to not work in certain pro audio jacks and 1/4" adapters.... The other is that rather than using resistors for the buttons they had to design their own little chippy thing. And of course I want volume as well as play pause. What complicates it even more is I want to be able to choose my own microphone which means taking off the embedded chip Mic and rerouting that.
I have found a couple of cables on the market but they are very hard to find and you pretty much have to go by picture looking for something that's a replacement for an existing product headphones with control. I have not tried any of these as the quality doesn't necessarily sound impressive when there's literally no information on the product page.
8:57 those are the same headphones I am using to listen to the audio in this video
i usually don't prototype i just stich the whole thing together without testing and then cry if it didn't work.
Koss makes a inline remote that you can plug into any headset for about $20 USD. I mean, what you did is way cooler, but the product does exist.
Agreed!!
Oh the problem you had with the s3 is a conflict i think.. The google app uses the same "code" that your music player uses. I uninstalled the google app and never had these issues.
About the phone, there many standards to different phones.
And there are software configuration differences too. Some phones recognize the press of this button in a different way (at least in older phones).
This systems compatibility goes way back, when samsung made dumb phones like the sgh-e215l that had the pause button. A galaxy mini, accepts the volume up, down, pause, even if its original in ear phone just had the pause/pick call button
Turn down those oversized plugs on the lathe for a video ;) I got similar problem with different plugs I got from china too. Works on old stuff, do not even jam those in tight stuff
nice, maybe another way is using a cheap headphone whit the 3 button and cut the cable and solder the ground and mic cables in a similar board
*B A D F I O*
Try some NVX XPT100
asesome made
ummm
can't you just cut off that remote and add a female jack after ?
You would only get one channel of audio doing that, as the remote is only on one half of the headphones
Joseph Still Just solder both channels directly after the controller together or put a little bit of tape around them to keep both cables for the two channels close to another
why didn't you just strip the inline controls out of the cheap crap headphones and splice the end to an input jack?
Where's the fun in that?
Yeah but the jacks are often cheap and prone to breaking
10:28 why to use 560ohm+47ohm=607ohm
Just want you to know that I like your videos, but will not be taking drawing lessons from you anytime soon
now patent it and make lots of monies
Was that a superuser prompt on ur s3
Just buy some bluetooth headphones, so much easier
the fiio doesn't even have bluetooth you ass
Bluetooth headphones are often much more expensive and are usually bad worse quality plus the device he wants to primarily use this with doesn’t support Bluetooth
No, I like high quality audio. Bluetooth headphones are for idiots who don't care about the massive loss of audio quality.
I had a £300 pair. I literally threw them out. Absolute trash.
The white is the finale, that's racist XD
Augh. Cheap Chinese tools aaaagh
