- I spent a weekend in Montezuma, Costa Rica. I had an amazing time, and I would definitely recommend a trip to this laid-back beach town!
This weekend we hopped on the ferry from Puntarenas to Paquera and drove down to Montezuma. We got to explore the town, eat some great food, enjoy some nature, see some giant waves crashing into the rocky shores of the beaches, and even catch the final Saprissa vs. Liga Game at a local sports bar.

I learnt very quickly that the more suitable name for this place is not Montezuma, but Montefuma. Great memories.

I was in Montezuma in March 2023 and really liked the vibe. It was really hot when i was there too - loved it. Actually hired a local to take me in a mountain bike tour towards Cabuya. There was the BEST chocolate shop along the way. All local and organic. It is a must stop for chocolate drinks. For the hike to the falls, the trail wasnt too bad since i did it! Lol (i am 62). I swam and jumped off the rocks next to the falls. If you want to go to the upper falls, you have to pay to use their stairs.
I loved it there, I hope to go back one day! That mountain bike tour sounds cool - I will definitely have to go an check out that chocolate shop, it sounds awesome!!! Good on you for doing the waterfall hike, you are an inspiration for others who might be considering it! Thanks for your insight!

If you ever come back to Santa Teresa you should stay for the sunset, as it is the most magical I've ever seen, but most importantly, you should definitely go to this cafeteria called 'The Bakery." It is possibly the best in the world, no kidding. I think Santa Teresa is more like the vibe of everyone there that makes it special :)

What a cool video! Reminds me of when I took my first ferry in Seattle. I've always wanted to try and ride a ferry in Costa Rica! I hope to do so if I ever come back one day. I think you indeed saved the best for last as you went to see a beautiful waterfall at the end. It's good you guys went super early despite a couple hours early until their opening time but hey, that's the nice thing about getting there early! It reminded me of when I went to Playa Biensaz super early before around 5:30 a.m. or 6:00 a.m. (there was a time where someone would be standing there and you would have to pay to get in as far as I read...). You still checked out a couple of cool beaches and even the Montezuma sign! I imagine that there's probably other things to check out as well but you took advantage of a weekend to spend a couple days there. You get a good feeling as to how Montezuma is so when you plan on coming back in the future, you already have a good idea on what you may want to check out next.
It would be interesting to see you visit places like Drake Bay or Limón or the eastern part of Costa Rica as well. It's also good to see Mama Sue on some of the b-roll you captured, even though it wasn't a lot :)

Thanks so much Tony! It was neat going on the ferry, I definitely hadn't ever been on one with so many cars before this trip, thats for sure! You definitely should give it a try if you ever come back down here! The cost we paid was only one way, so if you plan on going back on the ferry you will have to buy a new ticket to get from Paquera to Puntarenas! As for snacks and food, you can most definitely bring your own! If you're driving before and after the ferry, it could actually be the perfect moment to have a meal that you made or bought ahead of time, while you're sitting and relaxing... well, as long as you don't get seasick 😝
I personally would have loved to have gone to more of the sodas in the area, but I guess when you travel with other people you kind of have to compromise 😂
The birds that we saw in the restaurant, YES! They are the funny looking birds that I had mentioned!!
I am glad we went to the waterfall early, for me, there's nothing worse than crowds, especially when in the nature 😅 The trail was pretty cool, I liked the challenge of jumping from rock to rock, hoping not to slip on any moss!! It was fun!
