My journey to Lötschental primarily aimed to explore the unique and haunting Tschäggättä tradition, with its fearsome carved wooden masks, a tradition that dates back to 1790.
Start your journey in Blatten, the remotest village in the valley, radiant under abundant sunlight 🌞. And yes, don’t forget to carry a bottle; the Alpine water here is a crisp, pure, and delightful treat.
The Zur Blauen Stube stands as the valley’s most intriguing museum 🏛️. For entry, make a reservation via their website. It houses levels filled with detailed Tschäggättä costumes, a mask carving shop, and much more.
I had the rare privilege to witness the intricate process of dressing up for the Tschäggättä festivities in a private lair! Do watch my video for a thorough view of this experience.
If you're on the lookout for charming Swiss shops, Lötschental hosts Genuss-Hofladen, famed for its fresh local produce and handcrafted Swiss souvenirs 🛒.
🏨 For experiencing Tschäggättä traditions, Hotel Petersgrat is your ideal stop. The hotel offers exquisite Swiss breakfasts, impeccable service, and, the hotel manager, a professional Tschaggatta photographer, will treat you to phenomenal photographs of the tradition.
Wrapping it up, reaching this quaint Swiss village with just 1500 inhabitants was an adventure but experiencing the thrilling night with Tschaggatta made it utterly worthwhile. Plan your trip now!

You are the best for leaving such a super comment. It means a lot to me
I am Swiss, Matt, but it is with you that I learn a lot about many traditions and tourist attractions that even I didn't know. Have you ever been to Ballenberg? If not, you should do that when you next time go to Interlaken ... it's a must for such a curious person as you are. And, if you once are in Lucerne around Carnival time, I could open a very special door for you, so that you could spend a full day with a 'Zunft' (a guild). You would love it! - Well, I could open many other doors as well, giving you access to events, places and attractions that many tourists never see .... But, you would have to contact me rather early, due to the fact that I live in Panamá, and I would have to come to Switzerland to serve you as a 'door opener' ... By the way: I love to see Switzerland through your eyes ... :-), and I love the way you pronounce (very well!) Swiss German names and words with a sympathetic, light Dutch accent ;-)
Great video
I've become obsessed with Switzerland and it's traditions lately. I'm also a woodcarver living in the US and I can't wait to carve one of those masks.
