- This was a huge Elm log I spotted at a log yard and just had to have it. We were guessing it's about 150 years old. It came from a land clearing company. These were some heavy heavy slabs...

A true artist can take absolute garbage and make a masterpiece with it. It does not matter what the substance is, the true beauty is contained within.
Elm will produce some wonderful furniture.
Great video! One of my favorites! There is no one more passionate about milling than you George! It is contagious! And James is ready for stand-up comedy! He's a clever fella!
Elm was used in the days of sail for wood block and tackles on sailing ships because of its durability, the streets of my hometown used to be lined with elm, sad to say but it's all gone now
No matter how many times I see it, I think the look of that elm is one of my favorites. Beauty in its simplicity (compared to other woods cut)
We had the pleasure of slabbing an American Elm for a friend, what beautiful stuff! I'm glad to see stick certification is not being handed out all will nilly ;)
Just you wait. I'll get it next time!
That was some really nice looking elm slabs. Good job milling it up. Thanks for sharing
Dave Elm! I like this narration!
James is a funny dude.
My neighbor runs our city’s parks department. They are opening a nature center (ribbon cutting Friday). I visited yesterday and he gave me a tour. A couple things. This was my grandparent’s house when we were growing up. Outside next to the detached garage was a maple tree. It’s now a wood sculpture. There’s also a black walnut that’s at least 70 years old that actually has been cut back. And a honey locust I used to climb in. But the cool piece was an oak slab about 4 inches thick. If you counted the rings, it was 168 years old. The tree had been in our city park until recently. The rest of the story? There was a huge American elm in their front yard. The first crotch in that tree was at least 25 feet.
A lot of really cool trees there.
I just remembered the 4 weeping willows across the creek.
@@blucy10 I haven't sawed a willow yet.
Nice slabs! I drive by a tree service yard every day and most days its same old same old but other days its 'oh, what's that!' and of course I have to stop and check. 😁
Like a kid in a candy store right? I want this and that and ooooooh what is that one?!
Nice looking slabs!
I’ve never seen elm with bark like that looks like ash bark
I'm surprised how different is this elm wood grain from old European elm I worked years ago. Estonian elm had small dot-vector lines, as well as glare under angled lighting. Totally different timber here (also beautiful, apple-tree like).
A young tree was talking to an old tree and asking who his father was.
The old tree said to him "I don't know who your father was. You could be a son of a Birch or you could be a son of a Beech, but one thing I do know is that your mom was the best piece Ash in the forest.
maple she was maple she wasn't..
I didn’t know elm had a dark grain,it’s a nice looking slab!
This was a red elm, I think the one out front is American elm should be different.
Keren bos😮 alat yang moderen untuk memecah kayu .mantap...
do you take the sawdust off for a reason or just for show?
Sawdust holds moisture so cleaning it off helps dry the wood
Please make a solid top, woodworking bench out of two slabs joined ... it will make 1,000,000 views within a month. You want views? please do as I suggest.
It will take 2 years to dry the slabs

Well, fart.
Wood has to dry,but everyone insists on pouring water on the slabs.makes no sense.
Does washing lettuce make your salad wet? Same thing with wood.
