Middlefield Custom Sawmill is a small slab making operation in northeast Ohio. We are not a production mill, instead we look for those special logs that make great slabs. The mill is a woodmizer LT15wide, it can handle up to a 36" dia x 16ft long log. For the most part this channel is for those like us who just like to see what's inside a log. George (that's me) is the main sawyer, James and Chris are my sons, anyone called "uncle" those are brother-in-laws (Ed, Tony, Mike, Adam). We're just having fun, it's not about money.
Purple Creek Walnut Slabs on the Sawmill
Sawing tons of walnut lately, these were two of the logs. Really pretty purple that will turn brown as the air gets to it but for such an ugly log it sure made some beautiful slabs.

Massive Cherry Slabs!

These are by far the longest slabs I've cut yet. This was a huge cherry log I needed to get sawed. The slabs were 250 lbs each. Man were these nice slabs!

It was way to hot to saw but it was worth the effort. Still testing the carbide blades and so far I could not be happier with them. Tell me what you think these beautiful slabs would sell for?

I finally tried a carbide blade on my LT15wide. Sawing up a black walnut Y log that was 27" wide. Did I like it? Real world test.

Sawing 2x6's from a big Hemlock log. This is lumber for my next kiln build video. I will need quite a few 2x6's and 2x4's plus I'm going to need a bunch of 1xsomethings too. Lots of sawing to do.

Big Spruce on the Sawmill

My sister Beth and I saw up a big spruce log on the woodmizer. It was a beautiful day to spend outside sawing. It was a big log and we ended up with a lot of lumber from it.
Amazing Hickory Slabs!

This was one of the best Hickory logs yet. Steve and Karl were really into seeing what the next cut would reveal. I made sure they had plenty to take home and I've got more if they want it. Was a fun day sawing.

This is the first of a load of hickory logs Steve and I picked up a few weeks ago. I didn't expect this log to yield much but it turned out to be some incredible wood. I don't even know where to begin, it's always fun sawing with Austin. We spent the morning sawing lumber on the woodland mills HM130max. Laughing the whole time. Make sure you see the last 60 seconds!

Just a good day making lumber with a sawmill. Whenever Nate and I get together we have a good time. We cut some sappy, really sticky wood on the woodland mills HM130max. Making boards for a shiplap project nate has going at his sugarworks.

What kind of wood is this?
It's spruce, evergreen softwood.

Me too, I like watching the circle mills.
You have to hang heavy stuff closer to the machine. You can even take the fork attachment off and hang it from your cross bar. Good looking slabs.
One note. Mantels, for how thick they are, are never fully dry.
I am supposed to go pick up some 100+ year old barn beams for mantels. Bet those are dry lol...
Large sawmills pile their walnut tight. Steam it so it all turns brown. Then dry it. So there’s no white sapwood cuz no one can afford to cut off all the sapwood from every log
I would love to find a way to preserve the fresh cut colors. Also when I saw walnut for me I keep sapwood on it, I like the contrast.

What ever happened on the lumber kiln? Great last video. Shows what we can do when things don’t go right. And i thought that it was a me thing. Lol
I'm picking up 3 hemlock logs today to saw up for the kiln build. Can't build without the wood lol... Hemlock is amazingly difficult for me to get for some reason.
@@mcsawmill Eastern Hemlock is a threatened species. Bug infestations.
Beautiful walnut, sometimes I think it would be nice if the purples and greens stayed. We were both cutting wedges, just in opposite directions.
The colors are something only the sawyers see so I try to share that as best I can.
That black walnut is always great to looks at.

If the slabs are not flat with a new blade, are you sure the tension is high enough?
I always check blade tension, you're right that can easily cause waves.
I need to come back out and put a water spigot by the mill for you.

That's why I had to saw it now, if I let it sit much longer it would have been useless.
That's a beauty George. Seems like cherry is stingy with the figure, we often see cherry crotch with little figure and just a bunch of bark inclusion. You hit the jackpot!

It's black cherry, one of the few logs I can identify easily because the cut ends turn black.

It was headed for firewood when I spotted it. The first two boards I pulled off will make great laptop boards too.
"Fresh" cheery log. Remind me to avoid all leftovers in your fridge. For reals though you should make components to make casks for booze. Middlefield custom casks! Then pass a used cask to nate!

That they would. About 10 months ago I cut a. Huge 33" dia cherry, those would make a heck of a table! There's a video here of that log.

could you not run the sawmill through it first to take off the heavy cut. less work for your router.
You sure could but it wasn't really that heavy a cut, I was just taking thin cuts because all I had was a 1" flattening bit.
@@mcsawmill o.k just mentioned it as I have a mill and have done that before, you certainly end up with a smother finish using the router as opposed to the mill. always nice to see people with out of the box ideas
Where did you find a 1/4 shank flattening bit.
Amazon search for spoilboard bit, make sure you pick one with 4 cutters. Watch the dimensions.

Doug Smith is correct in his comment about mailing it to yourself via a registered letter. I had talked with a patent lawyer several years ago and that is as good as a patent for one year. Great idea.
Good to know but I didn't invent the idea, I just recognized a fairly cheap very well made device that would work.
That’s a great discovery. May have to try it. Wish it had up and down adjustments but I suppose putting shims in of equal size will be fine. I might have to come up with the additional rail system for the lt35
Any slab over 2" would need shims between wheels and extrusion bars but I make wood so that's not a problem.

It could use improvements, hoping I get someone at stonecoat to discuss mods they could sell for it.

It's a good start, needs up/down adjustable mod.
We are working at manufacturing one that has all that and will work on any mill setup. This is the first one I saw that came close to what we are doing! Thank you for sharing this.
Oh, by the way, I’m sure you can order a larger, cutting head for your rotor, or possibly get a bigger rotor for a bigger cutterhead. ✌️🇨🇦
Yes there are some larger options, also some that use replaceable carbide inserts. I have one on order! So thanks for the idea!

I have no idea whether you thought of it or not, but is there a way that a person can patent an idea such as you had there. If you didn’t think of it, and you did patent the idea and you mailed a special delivery letter back to yourself with the idea and drawings in it, you probably will make a fortune because I can see everybody who has a sawmill will want one of those gadgets. It was just an idea I had it was told to me years ago by a friend and of course I have no talent for thinking of things, other than when to come home for supper. Best of luck with your new toy. It's not a new idea. Woodmizer makes a really nice one called the MB100 that they sell for $10,000.

That's AWESOME! I wish I had skills to build stuff like that! You can't plane wet wood, try it on dry slabs and take 1/16 or less off on final pass for a good finish, 1/8 is crazy heavy pass.
This is fantastic. I just built one and didn't even consider building it to go in my sawmill. I just might have to build this. Great video.
