    ”We played a round of golf, I beat him (Michael Jordan) for a couple thousand and got ready to leave. Now, the Bulls are playing Cleveland that night. I’m thinking he’s leaving, it’s 10 o’clock. He goes ’No, let’s play again.’
    So we fill up a bag of ice and Coors Light and walk again. We roll around another 18 and I take him for another couple of thousand dollars. Now we’ve been drinking all afternoon and he’s going from the course to the stadium, to play a game.
    I’m messing around. I’m like, ”I’m gonna call my books. All the money you just lost to me, I’m putting on Cleveland.’
    He goes, ’I’ll tell you what. I’ll bet you that we’ll win by 20 points and I have more than 40.’
    I’m like, ’Done.’
    Son of a gun goes out and scores 52 and they win by 26 points or something.”

    LeBron is a beast and when he has a head of steam, will postarize anyone. What sets Jordan apart from a lot of bigger/more powerful dunkers is that he had one of the most efficient dunks in his arsenal. He doesn't need much space to get up, gets up quick, has a lightning quick first step, and could jump one or two footed. Add in a remarkable reverse game with crazy hang time, and the dude is a freak of nature.
    I always thought there were plenty of "better" dunkers, but in terms of efficiency of movement and usage of space, Jordan is one of best. He postarizes so many people because it doesn't even seem like he should be able to get in a dunk being only a few steps from the basket when he makes a lot of his moves. People have to remember that Jordan is indeed smaller than LeBron who has many advantages and skills above Jordan, but that means Jordan is going to be quicker, and have advantages there also. I've grown to actually appreciate the two of them more, the more I compare how great they both are.

    • @TheDudeAbides1998
      @TheDudeAbides1998 Před 2 lety

      Michael Fu- Lebron doesn't have many advantages and skills above Jordan. DESPITE him being bigger than MJ, he only gets 1 more rebound and 2 more assist? Lebron handles the ball far more AND there is less big man for him to worry about getting rebounds nowadays. And as far as defense goes, what games have you been watching?

    • @RandomSheep2.7
      @RandomSheep2.7 Před 2 lety

      @@TheDudeAbides1998 I just give credit when credit it is due. I didn't speak about d, so I'm not sure what you're asking on terms of games I've watched - I've watched bball since the late 80s. Defense doesn't have the same value today the way it had back then, so Lebron might be wasting energy playing better defense in today's era. However, they both surpass their contemporaries for their respective eras by a large delta, so while it's fun to compare, it's impossible to make an objective claim that one is better per skill set, unless you qualify it with specific metrics. I have taught statistics, so it's pretty fun to break down, but still somewhat subjective in nature since you have so much variability from the different eras. I lean more towards Jordan, but I'm not going to withhold credit to Lebron either.

    • @TheDudeAbides1998
      @TheDudeAbides1998 Před 2 lety

      @@RandomSheep2.7 Defense is part of basketball doesn't matter what era you are in. It's all effort. Some don't play defense just so that way they can stat pad and focus on offense. It was clear MJ was the best player in the 90's. Can't say the same for Lebron in his era.

    • @RandomSheep2.7
      @RandomSheep2.7 Před 2 lety

      @@TheDudeAbides1998 please don't reframe what I've said for convenience. I didn't say lebron is better. I didn't say he was clearly the best in his era, although that's not a hard analysis to make as he is likely above his contemporaries in many metrics. To be honest, I'm not even sure why you keep debating and adding things to debate about. I love Jordan today. I used to hate him, because he constantly destroyed three Knicks, but now I have to give him his props. I guess sports debates are fun? Well, let's get to it. Defense and offense is not weighted the same in today's NBA. If you were to play the same effort in defense in today's rules, you would have less effect in reducing the points of the opposing team. The same effort towards offense would produce more points than in the past. Winning is about putting your energy towards more points for you and less points for your opponent. Doing it efficiently in today's NBA means defense is necessary, but not the same as it was. This is assuming you're an offensively skilled player. Jordan would score more points in today's NBA, but also be less effective defensively. Please keep in mind I said less effective, as opposed to not effective - it's not a knock, just the results of different rules in play. Of course he would be great still, but it would be a bit wasteful for him to try to play lockdown defense with no hand checking, and more calls going to insanely quick, talented ball handlers, lethal shooters we have today. You nailed it when you said defense is effort, it takes less skill, but requires a lot of effort today, but with less reward. Aggressive defense might even get you into foul trouble. As an offensively skilled weapon, Jordan would be burning a lot of gas on the wrong thing. Maybe he'd keep his scoring opponent down to 16 points and score 28. But with today's rules, he might be better off to allow 25, so he can score 42. Anyway, you're right that mj played better defense, but you can't hold against lebron because his defense is catered to this era. There isn't an objective way to predict or measure how his defense would have evolved differently in a different era. Extrapolation is a very useful, but flawed method of drawing definitive conclusions.
