Using dribbling as a weapon wasn't really that common until after MJ had been in the league for awhile. Pete Maravich and sometimes Magic are about the only old school people I can think of that used dribbling like it's used today (I'm sure I'm probably forgetting people). Tim Hardaway and Iverson seemed to be the main catalysts for spreading it league wide. I think it's gotten to the point of ridiculousness though, the cradling and carrying is off the charts.
