Bill retired due to a health issue of some type. It has never been revealed what that issue was to my knowledge. We all still wonder what that 2004 season could have been like.

You can tell how popular a driver is or was when they request that their name be removed from the ballot to give other drivers a shot at being voted most popular driver. Voted most popular driver 16 times in his career, he could have been as many as 18 times if he hadn't requested in 2002 for his name to be removed from the ballot.
It was refreshing to hear a driver be soft spoken and humble about their presence in the sport and their growing fanbase. Rather than get cocky or arrogant, he stuck with the mindset of "I'm just happy to be here,"

Bill raced for 37 seasons, a record he still holds with Terry Labonte. That's a good reason to step down.
