I love the stories about the old inspectors who only cared about pre race inspection. Back in the day, after the race was over they didn't care if the car was still legal. Being creative and bending the rules was part of the sport.

They didn’t want the controversy of taking a win away. It still happens today, there are lots of rumors of the 48 failing post race and they would just tell them not to bring it back they would be looking for the trick part (area) next pre race inspection. It’s why they got fed up with Chad and suspended him so long a couple times

The stuff that comes out on these podcasts is just incredible! I never would have thought about the color of paint on the chassis having any bearing on how much was visible. Tony mentioned that they had a "good plate program". Good? For about 4 years, you could tell when the #4 car went by because it just sounded different. And it almost seemed as if, if you didn't have that Runt Pittman engine under the hood, you would be competing for second place at best. Might as well engrave Ernie's or Sterling's name on the trophy before the race.

  • @cuznclive2236
    @cuznclive2236 Před rokem +2

"How's the chassis?" ...very few people influenced my decisions while I worked in NASCAR; Tony's wisdom became clear at the latter end of my involvement. I did not do him right, but to my defense I was too stupid to get was he was telling me!
At 52, and as an accountant, I get it. Use the rules to make them an evolving thing for a benefit and evolve, unless simplicity trumps; then order the same lunch at the same diner for as long as it lasts.
I was one of the first to get 24+gallons in a fuel cell. Sorry Al (RIP) that I took an advantage in our relationship. He had Parkinson's Disease, but he loved to learn how I did it, and we had many great conversations about the process.
When Kyle, at PE2's team, went through inspection we handed $100/$200 Spree phone cards to officials in order to ignore the "pans" we placed under the lip of the nose (creating severe front downforce).
DEI introduced , and exasperated, severe shock pressure in 1998-1999; we like'd to kill Steve as a result. The purpose was to minimize "spring" (springs) by excluding them as much as possible; the result ended in deaths and severe/career ending wrecks.
Forward a few years, and we are running a three-point suspension at Talladega, with the right-rear spring being useless; I began to see more deaths occurring. NASCAR finally began to have a clue-ish.
Tony is the "Man" who made things change by staying simple, and I will never forget how he explained his life of wisdom to an idiot.

I’m not sure exactly when they had the tinted windows but they first won the Daytona 500 with that car in 1991 with Ernie Irvan as the driver so that might be a good race to look at first. Then they won the back to back Daytona 500s in 1994 and 1995 with Sterling Marlin as the driver for those 2 race’s. So that would be kind of interesting to see if they won those race’s with and without the tinted windows.

Who dis guy?? The Tony Glover I remember had VERY DARK brown hair! And he always had super slick cars. He and Runt Pitman - engine guru for Morgan-McClure on par with RCR legends Eddie Lanier, Lou LaRosa, Spenny Clendenen, Danny Lawrence - had the meanest, rudest sounding Chevys at Speedweeks with Sterling Marlin... that deep, rich, guttural growl-y rumble that made your toenails curl and your innards quiver with pure adrenaline and anticipation.
This whole episode was another good one. Thanks Dale, MD, and DMR/DJD!
PS: Dale, if you by some random act of boredom you should ever read this, go back through your Betamax collection to Bristol Spring Valleydale Meats 500 1991 around 2:32:00 of 3:03:58 race time. Watch for the jack stand to come flying out from beneath the left side of Sterling Marlin's #22 Maxwell House Ford and slide across the track after Sterling catches fire. Gives a whole new spin on lead weights in the railing. Can you imagine that little extra weight on the Left Front going in to the turns? Team owner Junior Johnson sure kept the NASCAR inspectors hopping and checking. Cagey ol' cuss!

Dale Sr was super fussy about the cheating crap. He always inspected every race car that he ever drove himself. Anything not right, it got fixed right or he'd refuse to drive it. Such was the case with the 1998 Daytona 500 car. Practice test runs, Dale Sr stated that the car wasn't right. His crew went through hell to make the car to meet Dale Sr's approval. End result, the car not only won but Sr stated that it was the best race car that he ever drove. I worked at Daytona, Darlington, and Talladega NASCAR tracks 1996-2006 as part of the security/safety teams. You'd be amazed at what goes on "behind the scenes" in NASCAR.

I honestly want to start a drag racing series where the entire point(besides 'just' winning the race of course) is to try to get illegal stuff past the inspections. No one gets suspended or banned or fined, you don't build up a 'record', if you get caught you either have the chance to fix it(if found before the race) or forfeit that race(gotta give competitors a tightrope to walk; the punishment isn't severe, but you gotta make it to the next round if you're going to get the money too). Just build your car to the rules except for where you think you can get away with breaking them! I want to see a cheating arms race, real innovation in cheating - and I'm pretty sure you would straight up have to be able to get away with cheating to win in such a series lol.
Of course, since this wouldn't be an anti-cheating series, there would be bonus points and what not for "best discovered cheat of the week", you would certainly need one for "best assumed cheater", ya know things like that, have some fun with it.
BTW, can you imagine like the final points race of the season? All hell would break loose, everyone pulling out ALL the stops to try to get them points lol(double points event for more chaos? I think so...).
Let's bring back the glory days of cheating in motorsports!

i wonder if nascar officials listen to these if i did and i was an official i'd be like all 4 of jr's cars they get a fine comb treatment in inspection. we don't check these every weekend? nope not your cars jr. we're going to find something eventually. and you will be the one we find because you just earned that right for all time with this video! i don't care who your daddy was i don't care how popular u think yoiu are. nope you get the real special treatment.
