  • In a 1980 game between the San Diego Chargers and Dallas Cowboys, quarterback and punter Danny White called two fake punts, without telling any of his teammates what he was doing. Both times, he was successful. This is the story of the time that Danny White fooled everyone twice in the same game

    Not intentional grounding because he was hit while throwing, not throwing to avoid a sack.

      I agree it wasn’t even questionably close to intentionally grounding. I think the commentator of this video didn’t clearly look at the better angle of the play. Danny white was one tough cookie!! Quarter back. iLife hard enough scrambling .running , eye wide open darting left right and everywhere to find Oppenheimer receivers ten trying to keeps a peripheral vision around ur self so u can stay alive,, then most don’t know this but I remember Tom Landry saying he Lars Danny call almost every play in the huddle, oh and then after exhaustion from quarterbacking and exhaustion from ur brain handling everything physically and intellectually for a good offense drive . Lol lol damn now I got to throw all my power in a big striking punt!! You’d think the legs wouldn’t handle it well. But amazingly he actually was better punter than 90’percent of the nfl punters that only powered up for couple punts a game!! Incredible athlete he was.. and he hold’s the record in Dallas for the best on punt yaardage percentage still. They say he was the Tony romp of the 80’s.. Danny was wasaay waaay.better than romo.

      I don't think this is correct. Brady got hit with intentional grounding when he got hit by Justin Tuck during the 2011 Super Bowl. Sure Brady's throw was farther but that doesn't make a difference on that kind of call. Here's the clip in question. czcams.com/video/9PsA_9qIIcI/video.html

    Neat video, always liked Danny white. I agree with what's already been said, Danny white was hit in the back by 71 before he releases the ball..
    Also of note, Danny white caught a few touchdown passes in his career decades before the "Philly special"

    I remember when I played HS football.. and the punter often was also another starter somewhere else.. and guys like Danny White, who was the punter AND the teams starting quarterback, well we prepared for this kind of thing every time that happened... and at the HS level.. that was about once per year.... So that would not be a surprise to me.. at least not as much as some take it for... I always loved watching White.. kind of a throwback in being a QB and Punter too.... He was the last and I remember they tried to replace him at P... but the guys they tried to replace him with, never could out-kick him...

I heard Dandy Don say White tried a fake in 1979 "and it backfired" (I don't remember it), because before I heard that I was going to ask if you know what White's fake punt success rate was. Maybe I'm wrong in how often he did it and how successful he was, but if I had to make a pure guess, I would say 7 out of 8

  • @Bork19
    @Bork19 Před 3 lety +2

    IMO this wasn’t going off the grid, most great coaches gives a specific player the freedom to check into specific fakes if they get the right look whether it’s the punter or the personal protector. Landry would never admit this to the press though because teams would start lining up to take away those fakes away or worse teams would line up in a way to trick them into attempting those fakes while knowing full well what to expect.

    OK son when you say the ref's were wrong, and you go out of your way to announce there was no way that his pass was anything but intentional grounding. take another look Whites arm when he was hit. The defense hit his arm and the ball. There was no way to determine what the intended target was. There can be no grounding when the defense completely changes the ball's trajectory by contact. You may have an argument for fumble because its hard to see if the impact to the arm came when it was going back or forward. Back would be fumble, forward incomplete pass.

    The premise of this video is false, or at least misleading. This wasn't a bizarre or unusual occurrence. Landry treated Danny White like a great base-stealer; he had the green light to go whenever he saw an opening. None of his fake punts were called from the sidelines.
