So I watched this vlog on 1080p60 and worth it! Amy, this vlog provided me with the opportunity to know more of your intellectual witty side which I wanted to know more about. The snappy witty jokes with a rich slice of erudition made my day. Please continue expressing the intellectual witty side of your personality!
What you said about practicing a lot of exercise questions etc rather than focusing on textbooks, I personally did use textbooks for subjects during highschool to master the content of the chapter as per syllabus requirement, BUT after using them to study a certain chapter, I went straight to practice questions from past papers. Past paper questions practice of a chapter is the best way to assimilate what you've learnt in the chapter. It actually makes 'learning' possible Amy which you've emphasized again & again, because when you're 'applying' the concepts of a chapter you studied in the textbook according to your syllabus, the 'applying' of those concepts to so many past paper questions practice will automatically make you 'remember' the content as well. When you 'learn' through practicing lots of past paper questions (and revise those past paper questions practice as well), all other things of study become a by product automatically. And it's better if you also keep a mark scheme or a standard with which you can check the answers of the past paper questions you're doing so that you know that your practice is on the right track. I actually practiced past paper questions as much as of around 10-15 years. Because at the end of the day, you're only gonna get high grades if you are studying smart and studying smart means that you are preparing directly according to exam point of view and the best approach for that is to practice many many past paper questions relevant to your exam format and syllabus. Because the examiner isn't gonna grade you on the basis of how many hours you put into study, but the examiner ONLY sees what you did on the exam and so it's way better to study smart according to your exam format and how you're gonna ace the exam on exam day. So for that, practice as many past paper questions you can (relevant to your exam format and syllabus) for each chapter individually as that will improve your grasp on each single chapter individually. Try to get past paper questions of each chapter individually. And once you've mastered past paper questions of all chapters individually, then it would be even better if you time yourself practicing full length past papers too to get yourself into the exam feel.
And I totally agree about the 'regular' & 'consistent' studying. I personally used to learn/practice/memorize etc daily at home whatever we covered in a day in high school. This way I wouldn't be stressed when exams were just around the corner because I knew I only had to revise mainly what I had already mastered on a daily basis. Little drops make the mighty ocean.
And I reviewed my marked tests & exams too the moment I got them and made sure never to repeat those mistakes again. Even if I had a single mark deducted, I would take it seriously. Otherwise the next thing you know those 1 mark mistakes keep on adding until you fall below an A/A*.
Yes, I agree that the mind gets dull studying similar subjects together. So it's better to create a contrast for what subjects you choose to study in a day. I used to pair English Literature with a science subject because English Literature gave me the fun lighter opportunity to go deep into the interpretations of the writer's text, and I love being deep. So see what's a fun light subject for you that you can pair to study with a demanding subject in a day.
And Amy, please don't hesitate to mention/brag about your achievements when required to make a point. And I know you don't hesitate, but still stay same on this or continue to brag even more when required. There's a difference between narcissism and self-confidence and a person with a high EQ (emotional quotient/emotional intelligence) knows it. I know that you're absolutely NOT a narcissist and that you mention your relevant achievements to validate a certain point you're trying to make according to context. It inspires people and they know that you know what you're talking about.
Always always remember the quote by Muhammad Ali: "It's not bragging if you can back it up."
And I'm gonna get that book 'Influence Is Your Superpower' by Zoe Chance for sure. Really like the title. Many thanks for the recommendation.

I'm really excited that I felt looser in this video than usual! This was really filmed on a whim, actually just 10 minutes after I saw the video pop up for me on CZcams! Everyone's methods are the best methods if they work for them! A balance of notes/textbook and practice problems is definitely great.
Ah, I appreciate you bringing up "bragging." That part about mentioning my credentials is always my least favorite part because I worry I sound arrogant, but you're right - I only say it such that my words can potentially have more weight to the viewer!

i see how it could be misleading. but yeah the reason i mentioned that studying you need to spend time doing it is because afterwards i said that ideally we WOULD have all the time but being efficient is better:) also i completely agree about time studied doesn’t equal results and the video before that (the one with 650k views) that was basically the whole basis of my video. but nice video and i noted things i should do better like defining terms. Also i agree with definitely NEVER taking what other people tell you to do but fit it so it works for you
Hey jspark! Haha was expecting you to stumble upon this. Again, great job on building your channel! I’m glad you can see the way your audience may take your video. You’re still early in your CZcams career (I technically am too depending how you see it), but you’ve already made a massive impact! With that being said, it’s really hard to stay consistent and I struggle with this too, yet we need to use our influence in positive ways. That means that while you did have another video about efficiency, we have to consider that videos are technically standalone and a viewer may only watch your “learning anything” video. I get how you were trying to say to be efficient later - my reaction was my raw reaction in the moment so I guess that might be helpful to you 😅
I also think they even with all the time in the world, students realistically would get burned out if they spend all day studying and because reading things is boring (idk maybe I just get bored only reading), while not even guaranteeing the information is retained.

As for mixing subjects - I do find it works really well for me! After studying history which has a lot of facts, names, and dates to remember doing maths is almost like a break for my brain since it's just using a formula and logic. There absolutely are days when I have to focus on e.g. literature and history, but I try to fit a quick maths revision somewhere in between so I don't mix everything up :))
I totally agree with basing your study sessions with the classes you're taking. When I was in highschool, I would study the least enjoyable class first (usually math lol) and then would study English. It gave my brain the break it needed, it boosted my mood, and I was still studying and completing the necessary assignments wthout feeling like I'm taking way too long studying to the point where I would burn out. And of course, I would end my studying with a good webtoon, anime, or kdrama LOL. You gotta treat yourself too!

I love your videos!! Thank you so much, they help me alot. However I have one request, which is that you always mention deep work sessions and lately I've been trying to do them, but no matter what, I always end up taking longer than the expected time, and even if I clear my study space, make timers, I just feel even more pressure to finish and procrastinate. Nothing I do works. Maybe it would be a great idea if you made a video talking about how to do deep work? I'm sure a whole video for that topic would really help me and many others out!
Also, when you mention you study 2 hours a day, for me I don't even have time to study for tests due to the amount of homeworks and projects given. Especially essays, they're the worst. Does doing your homework/etc count as your 2 hour study session?
I agree wholeheartedly with this. I have found that caffeine affects my learning process too. My brain gets flighty when I have too much caffeine in me. But there is a manic phase in certain types of learning. I read a book about the deciphering of the DNA molecule by Watson and Crick in a "History of Science" class, and one of them mentioned that they went through a "manic phase" in their studies. I believe there is a manic phase in creative work. It verges on euphoria. They talk about "remote associations" sometimes when people are discussing creativity. Unfortunately, too many people have come to associate creativity with doing drugs. I think there are writers whose drug habits had a profound effect on their work, and the image of a hard drinking writer is almost a cliche. I've also found that isolation makes me more creative. I am more likely to get those "remote associations" when I have spent a lot of time alone.
I’m always a night person. But still when I have 8 hours sleep and wake up early I’m more productive and get so much work done. When I’m at school, I have to motivation but it drops during the day. The fact that you can get so much done in the morning is amazing . Sometimes the small thing matter.
My biology teacher said that time is needed to create the neurological links which are responsible for learning, and I completely agree. When you learn early the knowledge is just there when you need it. At least for me, but it worked wonders. Now in university I don't have the time with my job, but I study when I can

Amy, there people who also learn a lot to the extent that they do not engage their selves with extra curriculum activities but at the end do not ace their exams. What do you think about such people.
What made math work for me was seeing it do something. A battery, a couple of components, and a multimeter or two can show an awful lot of math done on paper. Likewise, I like to take things apart to see how they work, too.

The yardstick of understanding is basically being able to use the Feynman method... but as Feynman himself admits at a low enough level of explanation there are simply brute facts that we have to accept about the universe.
An excerpt from a Feynman interview:
"Well, ice is slippery. Everybody knows that, no problem. But you ask why is ice slippery? That’s kinda curious. Ice is extremely slippery. It’s very interesting. You say, how does it work? You could either say, “I’m satisfied that you’ve answered me. Ice is slippery; that explains it,” or you could go on and say, “Why is ice slippery?” and then you’re involved with something, because there aren’t many things as slippery as ice. It’s not very hard to get greasy stuff, but that’s sort of wet and slimy. But a solid that’s so slippery? Because it is, in the case of ice, when you stand on it (they say) momentarily the pressure melts the ice a little bit so you get a sort of instantaneous water surface on which you’re slipping. Why on ice and not on other things? Because water expands when it freezes, so the pressure tries to undo the expansion and melts it. It’s capable of melting, but other substances get cracked when they’re freezing, and when you push them they’re satisfied to be solid.
Why does water expand when it freezes and other substances don’t? I’m not answering your question, but I’m telling you how difficult the why question is. You have to know what it is that you’re permitted to understand and allow to be understood and known, and what it is you’re not. You’ll notice, in this example, that the more I ask why, the deeper a thing is, the more interesting it gets. We could even go further and say, “Why did she fall down when she slipped?” It has to do with gravity, involves all the planets and everything else. Nevermind! It goes on and on. And when you’re asked, for example, why two magnets repel, there are many different levels. It depends on whether you’re a student of physics or an ordinary person who doesn’t know anything. If you’re somebody who doesn’t know anything at all about it, all I can say is the magnetic force makes them repel, and that you’re feeling that force.
You say, “That’s very strange, because I don’t feel a kind of force like that in other circumstances.” When you turn them the other way, they attract. There’s a very analogous force, electrical force, which is the same kind of a question, that’s also very weird. But you’re not at all disturbed by the fact that when you put your hand on a chair, it pushes you back. But we found out by looking at it that that’s the same force, as a matter of fact (an electrical force, not magnetic exactly, in that case). But it’s the same electric repulsions that are involved in keeping your finger away from the chair because it’s electrical forces in minor and microscopic details. There are other forces involved, connected to electrical forces. It turns out that the magnetic and electrical force with which I wish to explain this repulsion in the first place is what ultimately is the deeper thing that we have to start with to explain many other things that everybody would just accept. You know you can’t put your hand through the chair; that’s taken for granted. But that you can’t put your hand through the chair, when looked at more closely, why, involves the same repulsive forces that appear in magnets. The situation you then have to explain is why, in magnets, it goes over a bigger distance than ordinarily. There it has to do with the fact that in iron all the electrons are spinning in the same direction, they all get lined up, and they magnify the effect of the force ’til it’s large enough, at a distance, that you can feel it. But it’s a force which is present all the time and very common and is a basic force of almost - I mean, I could go a little further back if I went more technical - but on an early level I’ve just got to tell you that’s going to be one of the things you’ll just have to take as an element of the world: the existence of magnetic repulsion, or electrical attraction, magnetic attraction.
I can’t explain that attraction in terms of anything else that’s familiar to you. For example, if we said the magnets attract like rubber bands, I would be cheating you. Because they’re not connected by rubber bands. I’d soon be in trouble. And secondly, if you were curious enough, you’d ask me why rubber bands tend to pull back together again, and I would end up explaining that in terms of electrical forces, which are the very things that I’m trying to use the rubber bands to explain. So I have cheated very badly, you see. So I am not going to be able to give you an answer to why magnets attract each other except to tell you that they do. And to tell you that that’s one of the elements in the world - there are electrical forces, magnetic forces, gravitational forces, and others, and those are some of the parts. If you were a student, I could go further. I could tell you that the magnetic forces are related to the electrical forces very intimately, that the relationship between the gravity forces and electrical forces remains unknown, and so on. But I really can’t do a good job, any job, of explaining magnetic force in terms of something else you’re more familiar with, because I don’t understand it in terms of anything else that you’re more familiar with."

The secret is stop watching videos on the secret to learning and start reading the books for your exams lol. Almost zero top students watch videos on how to learn x and get better at y
But if you watch the video, you'll know reading is not the most *effective* study method 🤔Sometimes you need to sharpen the saw rather than keep sawing at the wood with brute force.

@@wamyy5I’m a uk student so our education system is approximately 2 years ahead of America education system meaning the avg student from uk would have knowledge equivalent to students two years above their age group although we have much less emphasis non academic hobbies or experiences Our universities are still highly regarded worldwide and it’s possible to get through the education system by reading books made for the courses you take amongst other resources. I don’t fully understand the American education system but I can only assume things from what I’ve experience in uk.

Amyyy, i literally noticed that he said the opposite thing after you played the video again (cant believe ive been falling for these tricks)
I was actually kinda avoiding using active recall because i remember studying my text book for like 20 minutes and filling my whole textbook with highlighters and when i tried remembering what i had learned i remembered nothing. Im trying to use this technique again as i think its important to test yourself and you also get to know your mistakes

I actually used to think that if I study for a longer time I'll be able to do better and it's actually quite the opposite even if you study for 1 hour and understand the concepts, it's so much more beneficial than just looking at your textbook for 15 hours straight and telling yourself that you're productive

Being consistent is actually so important, it's like if you study math everyday you'll be able to pass easily but if you study 1 day before and just dump all the concepts in your brain your more likely to fail and actually forget what you DID know.
That's actually what I do, these days I'm preparing for my German spelling bee and me and my friend like to quiz each other and especially starting from the hardest words, it definitely helps a lot.
I think for many students studying for 5 minutes is not possible because I think schools don't make their schedule according to how much you've prepare though I actually read in atomic habits that to build consistency you should start small like you start with doing things for two minutes e.g on the first day opening your notes for two minutes, than going through the notes the next for 4 minutes like increasing the time. It definitely is really helpful but I think many students like meee find it hard.
I actually want to say that studying the subjects in the same category is really helpful e.g if you do math you'll get bored at first but let's say after math you study physics you'll actually be more interested because similar concepts will be applied(like you mentioned in the video) and you'll enjoy the subject more
And I totally agree with the learning and remembering tip, like I said earlier that I passed my exam by just doing past papers and seriously I didnt learn a single thing I just did the questions so many times that I knew the answer but I didn't know WHY that was the answer.
