Lexus LBX UK review - Lexus quality in a compact package? Best new car UK

  • I haven't had such an enjoyable time with a car in a while until the Lexus LBX. This striking hybrid crossover will turn heads and save money at the petrol pumps. BUT starting at £32,000 does it have enough LEXUS quality?

I'm awaiting delivery from Wolverhampton Lexus; it landed at the dealership this morning. Mine is blue with a black roof. I really liked the Original Edition in that fantastic copper colour, but it's 40k. It's difficult to justify the price difference with the Premium Plus on just the colour and creature comfort, and like you, I really like that vegan leather upholstery as opposed to the Alcantara of the Takumi and higher versions.
On the power thing, the Lexus all have 136bhp, the Yarisses Cross has 116 for the basic versions and 136 for the Premier Edition. Also, I didn't hear you mention that the LBX's track and wheelbase are wider and longer than those of the Yaris.
The only thing where the Yaris Cross wins one point is the 40/20/40 rear seat. However, having tested the Yaris, it's really drab inside ... two minutes driving the Lexus, I was sold! What would have been nice is a textile opening roof (like on the Aygo Cross), which would have given open-air sensations at a lower cost than a glass roof (only available on range-topping Takumi Design) and without roofline penalty. As you said, the rear seats are unsuitable for the likes of Eilis!

Another great review Tish, relaxed with everything covered. Although its a good looking little Lexus, I'd find the lack of elbow room and the step down into the boot very irritating. Regarding your comparison to Honda, I recently acquired a Honda zr v advance (after seeing your review for it!) which has plenty of elbow room and a lovely flat boot, plus a brilliant 2 ltr engine and electric motor set up making a fantastic yet economic drive - ending my 30 odd years as a Toyota/ Lexus driver.

While I agree that the 136 hp it has is enough for city, it doesn't exactly scream luxury when you start overtaking on country roads. At least here you really appreciate good overtake performance when the zones viable for overtaking are very short. As for USB, the car does not have a regular USB port for a USB stick, instead it forces you to use your smartphone and that means I have to adapt wired android auto. Great review. Great car. Thinking of getting one next year as it will likely be updated come the new year. The LBX is much more stylish than the Yaris Cross ( which looks boxy and lumpy, almost as if it's just congealed around the chassis). The yellow colour doesn't it no favours though. Only minor reservation of the exterior is the oddly small rear indicators. Engine would be fine for me. It's a city car, so would rather have better fuel economy than more "oomph". Boot space is fine. Who, realistically, is stuffing over 400L of whatever into their car on a regular basis? Interior also looks good. I like the lower central display. You shouldn't need to be looking at it whilst driving as you have all you need in the HUD and more behind the steering wheel. I am surprised they still even have that stumpy gear shift. Moving that to a stick on the steering wheel, or even just buttons on the central section, would improve the aesthetics of the interior.

There's a reason why many CZcams channels dont review this LBX, and because it is NOT a RX, NX, LS or the legendary IS. Those are the more popular and best selling Lexus vehicles. But right off the bat, the shape. It's so weird seeing a puny Lexus. It's like a miniature RX500h, but it still maintains that familiar Lexus style. Not really a fan of this particular colour but i do like the body lines. Love the LED lighting and technology. Hate that exposed wiper at the rear so that's definitely a zonk. It needs to tucked underneath the roof spoiler to clean up the style. An unusual Lexus but for the price, it's good to have a bit of luxury in a sub-compact package. Great review as always.😂

Folk seem to miss those points. It’s an entry level Lexus, based off the Cross. That’s what it’s supposed to be.
A premium version of the cross, a taster and gateway into Lexus ownership.
After owning several Yaris and after a long test drive in an LBX I can happily say first hand that as soon as possible this summer I’m in an LBX, its levels above the Yaris both hatch and Cross.

@mikesanders5433 right off the bat, I'm glad that your experience with the LBX is a positive one. And not surprising either. Lexus is known for reliability. As for the Yaris Cross, it's popping up everywhere in my area. It's not as refined as a Lexus but for many customers I guess it doesn't have to be. So it'll be interesting so see how well this car does in terms of sales. Will the Yaris Cross continue to outshine the competition, or are customers willing to go the luxury route and spend the extra money? I'm very interested in seeing how this plays out.

No idea why you narrowed you search to UK. There are ton of LBX reviews on YT.
There is no sport mode. That special mode on gear selector is for mountains and lets you control strength of regenerative breaking. Nothing to do with sport mode, but more like "manual mode". It feels dynamic due to quite powerful electric motor which is linked to 2x stronger battery than Yaris has. This is the key to good dynamics.

I can't believe anyone can sum up this car as not bad value. Why compare prices of the average Honda EV ( which is much bigger ) to a hybrid? It starts from over £32k for a small SUV. Why compare it to a Q2 when a Q2 is bigger? It's natural compeditor is it's cousin the Toyota Yaris Cross. I reckon this car will be quietly dropped in the next few years. £40k for a small city SUV with little rear space and a boot that's less practical than a Yaris Cross ( Our yaris Cross came with a split rear boot floor as standard ). Our YarisX is great 2nd car for around town but far too small for anything else. Build quality aside, the Lexus is the same car. £40k for something that's only good around town? Common sense says that formula isn't going to work. I give it a few years before it's dropped here in the UK.

I don’t understand this vehicle. The design isn’t particularly premium, nor is it particularly Lexus. Furthermore, the front facia looks similar to the CHR and other new Toyotas but less bold/striking shouldn’t it at least be the other way around. I ultimately think the design is to close to Toyota, the interior may be well built but the design is typical of a Japanese interior, a bit weird/bland, old school and merely functional, not all you want from a premium vehicle. I think this will fail at bringing in the new and younger customers to the brand, the aim of this Lexus Breakthrough Crossover (LBX)

      - the EV market is on its arse with supply massively outweighing demand (Porsche are refusing to take Taycan’s on trade because they can’t shift their new ones).

      - when motor l-trade and independent dealer networks refuse to go anywhere near EV’s.
      - when it’s got the classic Tesla build quality (aka its shite)
      - when EV’s on the whole have laughable depreciation values and ridiculous battery deg
      - when a raft of major car manufacturers like Volvo, BMW, KIA, Toyota are all publicly diverting resources from current EV tech to Hybrid tech and towards actual viable mass production green motoring in hydrogen fuel cells. Volvo have even admitted their EV’s cause more greenhouse gasses to manufacture than ICE and Hybrid cars 😂😂).
