When my grandmother passed away, her left hand was closed like a fist due to arthritis.
The funeral director immediately contacted my aunt letting her know, he wouldn’t break her hand so he came up with an idea of placing bouquet flowers, inside her hand. My aunt was thankful that he called her. I just wish the funeral home in this story had enough sense to make his funeral arrangements properly.
I used to work in a funeral directors. One man that had passed away was very disabled so had died contorted and he couldn’t be straightened to fit in to his coffin. Bones had to be broken to fit him into a coffin for his height. That wasn’t ‘mutilating’ the deceased or in anyway disrespectful, it was just something that needed to be done. More often than not families don’t want to know about such things and sometimes it’s better for them not to know the practicalities because of the distress it might cause them. I wouldn’t for example have told people what happened during a cremation unless they asked and even then you don’t tell them everything because they wouldn’t be able to comprehend the process so it’s kinder. I agree though that it’s a different thing cutting his legs off. Thankfully though things like this rarely happen now, mainly because they can’t afford to be sued. So many people have jumped on the ‘where there’s blame, there’s a claim’ wagon in this day and age.
@@ruthe71 I heard of those things as well but I’m glad in our situation the funeral director had sense enough to contact my aunt to let her know what was possible but turned into something that wasn’t stressful. In this story was careless and disrespectful. The funeral director should of accommodated the family more professionally.

@@ruthe71 Yeah, but cutting a loved one's legs off shouldn’t be an option. They should’ve informed them that an oversized casket would have to be ordered. They should’ve been up front with the family about pricing and delays and communicated with them throughout the entire process. Instead they cut the man's legs and tried to hide it. In the end they took a loss.
My grandfather died with a massive hard on when it came to the funeral they had to balance a top hat on it not that many noticed. True story!
My brother passed in 2013 and he was the same height as this man was. That being said, my brother had a special made casket which cost an extra $1,000. It's unacceptable for a mortuary to do such a thing.

They robbed my Dad's policy so bad that there was not a dime left out of the burial policy to purchase a grave marker. His policy was valued at $15,000. They bled me out so bad over the money. And ...I rented the casket , he was cremated . The casket was not burnt . It got re used. But they still got every dime. I couldn't even get him a grave marker. I hate funeral directors. They are thieves . Money hungry monsters.

Y’all really need to look into BF CAVE FUNERAL HOME. Cause he’s nothing like MICHAEL CAVE was and I know that for a fact. That’s why it’s bf cave cause the new owner last name is cave as well but he’s not like Michael cave. That funeral home been around since the founder of that funeral was alive at the time. My uncles use too play with J Hines when he had his group formed they were called J Hines and The Boys

My husband passed away in 1999. He was 6 4” with very wide shoulders. When I made his funeral arrangements, the funeral director told me that my husband needed a extra wide coffin because he had very wide shoulders. Extremely distraught having to make the arrangements. I truly appreciated them bringing it to my attention.

My grandmother worked at a mortuary in the 50's. The stories she had, even from those days? Scary. Nothing I hear now surprises me.

@Julie Goodrich yes. Exactly what you’ve just said. My younger brother who turns 30 in a couple of weeks was diagnosed with autism. Quite nicely compared to some others. So I could see In this chaps behaviour how he kept repeating and a bit flappy bless him. He was so fixated on what was right. I suppose a lot of people don’t think adults with autism. It’s more kids. That guy that questioned you about filming- he acted like you came out with a whole film crew and team of reporters. You're a guy walking and talking to a camera. You handled that well. Funeral homes make a fortune on every funeral. From the flowers, to the paper programs, to the services. The markup on caskets are high, too, from what I have read. They have a very important job. It's the last time the family can do something for a deceased relative while they are above ground. Funeral homes should treat all parties involved with respect. There should be stiffer penalties for them when they don't especially when dealing with remains. Keep up the great work.
Seeing Reverend Hines' grave and hearing what his body endured, it hurts my heart to see there is no headstone for him. He deserves THAT much.
Yeah that really bothers me too. It'd not right. He should have a beautiful head stone, especially if his widow received a settlement.

A funeral home who did something this heinous would never be able to pay me enough to keep criminal charges from being filed. His widow should have had a headstone made for him with some of that money... she doesn’t seem to mind the funeral homes name on his marker. Such a sad story all the way around.

There's no law against filming private property on/from public property. Only the owner can ask you to leave private property.
True......but you do need permission to film private property while standing on it from the owner, and Lamont was doing that even though for a very short period of time. The man that questioned Lamont must be family or a friend cus he was kind of mad.

@@stormnightmare4316 we don't know with certainty where Lamont was filming, or whether he ever went onto the funeral home property. Regardless, generally speaking, only a property owner or leasee can ask him to leave or trespass him. He has the right to film anything from public space.

I saw this on an episode of Tales From the Crypt. The mean uncle did this to his nephew. I feel it's sad, but what's sadder is the wife neglecting to buy her husband a decent grave stone. Goes to show everybody loves you until they get paid
Can't believe that his wife couldn't give her husband a descent headstone with the monies she received in her settlement. Seems odd and rather cold.

Small towns don’t celebrate deaths like others. Tombstones are important but not as important in small towns. I lived in a small town. I can only speak for ppl of color. If in a small town they usually don’t have much and when they do get something the last thing to spend it on is something/someone that’s deceased.. I hope this helped ❤️❤️

Some are traditional and other are economical. Like the old saying, different stokes for different folks. Again thanks for the info.
@@sugarii4809 you are right but honestly it's not just people of color, it's because they're are ridiculously expensive. My husband (in profile pic) passed away a little over 2yrs ago, he arranged to have his body donated to science in the hopes that others wouldn't have to go through what he did but he knew they weren't going to try to research what caused his health to decline & the other reason was so that I wouldn't have to worry about any burial costs. One thing that always bothered prior to his passing was that his oldest sister, 1 of his brothers, his nephew, & his uncle didn't have headstones. Also, the top of his grandmother's vault was split & caving in basically bracing itself from falling in on her casket. I am actively trying to figure out how to make headstones & a new vault lid for his family members. I've watched CZcams videos but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for because in order for them to have that shine you have to add lime to it; I have yet to find 1 that says how much or at what stage to do it. I can't give them anything fancy but I can honor him & them by giving them something nice for his other brother, sister, nieces, & great nephew something to visit. My husband was the youngest of 5 & there was 15yrs between him & his youngest sister.
Had a black friend told me that when the family went to the funeral parlor for the viewing that first thing they noticed was that his dad's feet was sticking out the end of the casket about a foot long when they asked the people there why this is they told him being he was so tall they had to cut the casket open to let his feet hang out, I thought he was kidding me but he said he was not & they burried him like that I told him I would have never accepted this that I would have demanded them to extend the casket, goes to show how these funeral parlors have no respect for the dead as well for the family..

It looks like the funeral home had their license revoked in 2016. The owner admitted that his father cut the man’s legs off and apparently his father did not have a license to embalm bodies either. I’m wondering how they opened back up. That’s horrible. May this man Rest In Peace

Unfortunately, all they have to do is change the name of the owners and business name on the deed and business license to reopen the funeral home. Sad but true. The same people could be working there but under a cousin's or other relatives name.
Rest assure We all face Judgment, what they did was desecrate a body they will pay for it.
His wife got a cash settlement and all he got was his legs cut off and a metal stick for a grave marker? Sad.

Thank you for bringing this story to light. Sadly there are some funeral homes that prey on the bereaved. If you are laying a loved one to rest, ask questions, look for reviews online and if you have any doubts about a funeral home, walk away and find one that will respect you and your loved ones final wishes. Don't let a funeral home push you into making decisions before you are ready to!
What a sad story. The fact that someone could be so heinous during someone's time of need is scary. Great video of usual! The guy's face when you told him that funeral homes do bad things to good people was priceless
I’ve been to Mortuary school and have worked in the Funeral profession. That act of abuse was highly illegal and that funeral home should be closed down. My sympathy to the deceased and family.

Dealing with a lot of loss lately. Lost a best friend age 31 tragically. The fact that Lamont tells stories of otherwise forgotten people is a noble thing. I always think about how long I will be remembered when I pass. With people like Lamont out there preaching the respect for our lost brothers and sisters it makes me feel secure that people like him are out there.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Just take it one day at a time, do whatever you need to do to grieve. It hurts like hell, but over time it settles. You are going to be okay❤️

I remember watching a Tales from the Crypt episode where a funeral home sawed off a young boys legs to fit him in the casket. I was about 8 at the time. Scarred me for life. I'm from SC and work with a funeral home and never heard of this story. Thank you for doing this story, bringing some truth to this situation and giving. Rev.Hines some dignity. Rest in Heaven, sir.
I remember that episode too. I was about 20. That was one of the episodes that featured a black cast, which made this story even creepier to me. If I remember correctly, the kid was a basketball player.
@@teribarker1021 it was a story of a young black boy that his parents had died. The last living kin was this guy that was funeral director. He really was a con artist and was pretty mean, didn't care about nobody but himself.. When the boy arrived, he didn't want him there so to cut the story short, the funeral director received or made a coffin that didn't fit somebody...so instead of sending it back, he killed the boy for no reason. The boy came back haunting him and killed him as well.

This same thing happened to my uncle in Florida in 1976. He was 6'8". I don't think my dad took any legal action. He just flew the body back home & buried his brother.

20 years my husband's aunt passed,she had a pre paid funeral package.The funeral home called and asked if they minded if they cut her up to get her to fit in the coffin! My uncle was horrified!He paid for a bigger coffin,but my god what a horrible question to ask a family member.

I know the funeral home asked if they could break my grandmother’s arms to get her to lay in the casket. Her neck was also stuck in a awkward position from lack of movement but they were able to pillow around her head to keep from breaking her neck. I guess it’s pretty common when people stop moving and (I can’t remember the med terminology for it) basically their tendons atrophy and freeze their joints in a position

Was she obese? Apparently that has been a real challenge for funeral homes in recent years.
@@12yearssober no she was very very thin. She had basically given up and wouldn’t move and wouldn’t eat anything but baby food. She made her mind up To die after my grandpa died and just gave up completely. By the time she died she reminded me of a family friend who has cerebral palsy she was so “drawn up” for lack of a better term.

I agree with you on the irony but it wasn't even his money to save. The wife would have been billed for the extra expenses. For all we know, he charged her a little extra than the standard burial and still did what he did to Mr Hines.
His loving wife got a large settlement over the abuse of his corpse and yet she couldn't even buy her husband a simple stone marker.

Thank you for sharing this story Lamont. One thing I find very sad apart from what the funeral home did to this poor man, is the fact that that his widow didn't take some of the money she received from the out of court settlement, and buy James a decent tombstone, instead of ljust leaving his grave to be marked by the pathetic looking little plaque from the offending funeral home. It's kind of like adding insult to injury. I don't know, but that's just my opinion. 😢
True…if she didn’t feel up to it, a relative should have gently guided her through the process of ordering a proper stone.
This man deserved so much more than the fake poinsettia and that plaque. I hope that his relatives can make better arrangements to honour his memory. Thank you for doing this story.

Unfortunately this is really happening today!!! My brother was 38 when he passed away in May of 2017 of a massive heart attack… this same thing was done to him…. His legs were missing!! We weren’t supposed to know, his organs were gone as well!! All the funeral director could tell us was, he was an organ donor!! With no organ donation on his license!! How is something like this allowed to even happen… the black organ market is real 😪😪😪ppl pay attention to your loved ones once the funeral parlors are so-called done with them!

I am unsure of your state or country, but a young, sudden death may require an autopsy. When an autopsy is performed, organs can be bagged and placed in the body upon release to the mortuary or discarded.

I remember seeing that happen on tales from the crypt when I was a young kid, the guy's uncle did it to him. Absolutely disgusting it's a real life scenario. There was a funeral home in Detroit that had the wrong body in the family's service. People's remains just laying around among other despicable things

Blindness and eye problems go along with albinism, unfortunately, and his pale skin would have been susceptible to melanoma. Now I’m thinking about all the tall guys I’ve known and hoping their legs don’t get cut off ultimately.

What is crazy is that the guy that sawed his legs off, more than likely knew James, because that is a small town and everyone knows everyone....deceased or not, whether they knew him or not... cutting a person's limbs off takes a non human to do that... Everyone in that town would have known Pastor Hines. He would have left quite an impression and at almost 7 feet tall, he would have been hard not to notice. I say that with respect.
I used to live in Allendale and heard of this going on in the 80’s by this same funeral home.
I remember a story in 2006 of a funeral home on Long Island, NY harvesting the bones of Alistair Cooke, a British actor, for illegal bone grafts for medical uses. They actually cut Mr. Cooke's legs off to harvest his bones for grafts for such things as dental grafts. I knew a lady who actually received an improperly harvested graft which had not been purified and she still suffers from long term illnesses to this day. RIP to Rev. Hines.

Having a sister who’s buried in a cemetery that has no address, in a town that doesn’t exist, in a different state 💔😔💔😔 and 20 minutes from her biological mother who went as far as I can tell at least 6 years without knowing her headstone was broken 💔😡 and 😡😡 I had her headstone fixed in 2017 guess who still hasn’t even noticed? I guess it’s hard to notice when you never visit your daughter 😡💔💔. She should of been buried in her home town. It’s horrible how some people have no compassion 💔💔💔. Thank you for sharing this gentleman’s story. Hopefully one day my sister will get her story told. 🤟🏽🤟🏽 this is so horrible

How do you know she is not planning to be buried next to him when she passes away and prepaid for a joint marker? How do you know what her financial situation was? How do you know if she was so devastated by what happened that she was mentally incapable of making that decision? You don't! Mind your own business! What is a shame is your lack of compassion and empathy for another person when you don't know their circumstances.
@@beachypeacefulvibes8599 - Usually when couples are buried together, the stone is placed with the first one's name. And then 10-20-30, however long it is until the next one joins them, they simply move the stone to bury the next one. Then later add the plaque with the new name.
That’s just sick what they did to him , I recently lost my mum and the funereal home we used where brilliant. They let me and my brothers carry her in and out of the church at short notice, they talked us through everything. Couldn’t have asked for a more helpful group on that hard day.
The funeral home let me and my sisters dress my father for his funeral.

This is a very sad situation, no one should be treated like that, even if they've pass. Maybe she doesn't have the money for a gravestone yet, I hope he gets one. Hopefully the funeral home, state or a go fund can get him one 🙏🏽

This is just so awful. My mother just passed away and I am devastated. Thank you for showing such respect and kindness. My mother had Alzheimer's and didn't know me in 2015. It's so hard to go through the disease and then her passing away. Thank you, you are always so gentle in these tough situations and I appreciate it.

Thanks for covering this story, I remember reading about this back when Mr. Hines' body was exhumed. I wonder how much money the widow was paid to remain quiet about the issue. I'm glad the disgruntled employee brought the truth to the light for all to know.
