The safest way to reach these peaks is to be able to go at your pace, neither having to hurry or having to wait. Greed and mountaineering can never co-exist with these mountains. The mountains will win.

Exactly. Hard to understand why people don’t get it. It’s tunnel vision I suppose. Need a person who is thinking clearly & logically to advise what’s best from experience. I guess when it costs 10’s of thousands of dollars your not thinking correctly. Sad situation

On a slightly separate note, it seems like some of these wealthy, wannabe mountaineers assume that being able to spend tens of thousands of dollars will somehow compensate for their lack of skill and experience when they take on these dangerous "adventures".
Sure, having lots of disposable income will make it possible to buy better gear, but that gear isn't going to magically grant you immunity to extreme fatigue and oxygen deprivation once you get above 26,000 feet. I should know about such things, as I've climbed the dizzying heights of Iron Hill Delaware, which sits at the staggering elevation of 9,997(centimeters)! 😁
Feel so bad for the children of the people that die up there. Easy for them to think they weren’t fulfilling enough for their parents. They obviously love the thrill more than their own kids. Don’t have a family if you’re going to chase such dangerous and selfish pursuits
For sure, the loss of a parent lost on one of these endeavors becomes part of the fabric of who these youngsters grow up to be.
One thing I can’t stand about mountaineers is that everybody they climb with seems to be a legend which probably makes them feel like a legend by association. I suspect they are all legends in their own mind.
I'm not following the line of thinking, but appreciate that you took the time to comment. Personally, the only legends to me have long since passed: Bradford & Barbara Washburn, Ed Hillary. They were of strong opinion but steeped in humility and gratitude. Cheers
@@EverestMystery not so sure about Edmund Hillary. He has criticized a number of people for not performing impossible rescues above 8000’. If you can’t self ambulate in the death zone, you are already dead. As well, his fame is so old, it is impossible to separate truth from fiction other than the fact he summoned first.
Something seriously needs to change in this crazy obsession of those with a bucket of money & not much else getting all but dragged up these mountains. I'm sure some have more ethics than others, but the combo of greed by some companies & sherpas getting little reward for taking such high risks along with a reckless, greedy government that doesn't seem to care how any permits they dole out is destroying the whole nature of Himalayan mountaineering & the culture of the people. I really hope things change for the better soon. Thank you for this update & also to Flower for her words & thoughts.

Sherpas make in 1 summit what a school teacher is making in 1 year in Katmandou.
Let's face it, 8000's aren't the place to learn the basic skills. There are plenty of examples of how things can go wrong because of it. And it doesn't matter if you have 2 or 3 experienced climbers supporting you. You aren't only putting yourself at risk but others too.
For sure, something to be said for gaining experience and building up to the big stuff.
My heart breaks for Jim he has now lost his children and 2 wife’s I don’t how he’s still going.
@Don Greek his first wife and kids died in a plane crash and he met hilaree who he now just lost on manaslu he wasn’t involved in either situation just terrible luck
Thanks so much Mr Pollard for a great interview. It's one thing for us to comment or hypothesize, but it's another world up there on the top. The inexperienced climbers can really create a danger to themselves and others as I learned from this interview. Stay safe.

Thom, thank you for your videos (I'm a new fan) and for featuring people like Flo who are proof that reaching a summit is not the "be all end all" goal and that listening to our bodies and nature are far more important. I'll add respect, knowing your own limits, building adventure rather than leaping too far beyond your abilities, and the importance of preparedness and communication.

So much dependence on sherpas, good weather and other climbers make everyone unsafe. If there is a line, to hike, find a different mountain.
If you are going to die if the weather changes, guess what, it does. Prepare or take the risk, but thats on you.
It's a dangerous sport. That is the point. Turning every peak into disneyland, with guide-ropes and workers, cheapens the experience.
Needing rescue also means demanding others put themselves in danger. Use it if you need it, but don't need it in the first place.
Nice channel mate. You do a great job of telling the story. I find it very hard not to be critical of inexperienced climbers who go for these big summits. 😂

Great explanations and better when it's from someone who knows what it's all about. I actually found your vids through watching the ones with Adrian Ballinger. After seeing him climb with that fella Cory who has depression was truly amazing. Not sure but think Cory is know for something sporty but to see his real life struggles in action but pulled through and kept going and how supportive Adrian was...Well think I have developed a little crush on Mr Ballinger lol
Two pretty incredible climbers right there...both were on Everest in 2019 when we were there. Incredible athletes. Cory is doing something exceptional by opening a window on his world so the rest of the world can see. It takes courage, and ultimately makes the world a better place. Thank you so much for the kind comment, and honestly, the woman screaming in the video is the reason I used that clip....I didn't talk too much about it but it exemplifies the idea that there are people there with very little mountaineering (or life) experience, which makes the mountain that much more treacherous. More Sherpas being sacrificed for braggarts who are not real mountain lovers. A summit pic is all they are after. A boast to their friends that they’ve climbed a big mountain. If their friends knew the selfishness of the braggarts and the real circumstances of Sherpas fixing the ropes, cooking their food and setting tents up for them meaning it’s just a long walk to the summit with most of the danger taken away by the Sherpas the friends would see a braggart fake mountaineer.

It's interesting how important "summit bagging" can be to some people. I'm in it for the spectacular views and journey/challenge (with what little experience I have).
I personally will never understand taking even a slight risk to summit.
Agreed, although I was less averse to risk for many years. Some steps I was unwilling to take. I guess we all have our limits, and those on the extremes have a very wide comfort margin. Thanks as always for watching!
They are paying tons of money. Takes forever to get there and set up. They never realize it’s better to come back and try another day than to be dead. Untill it’s too late. Lots of these types of past times have these dire consequences. Like cave diving. High mortality rate. Never meet many old retired cave divers
@@judd0112 yep that's facts. I have seen it on backpacking trails. It's a cancerous mentality to connect your self worth to "making it" (sometimes in ___ amount of time) just to nab a pic and brag to friends that you are so adventurous when the whole point of getting out there is to get away from that type of mentality

I hear you....but, these were good talking points and nice to straighten out, as I hadn't realized I'd neglected to remember Adrian's ski descent (kept thinking it was just Makalu). The drone reaction I found kind of amusing...and honestly wanted to revisit the importance of that footage as it has been a game changer on the mountain. I understand that we focus on the deaths of people we have heard of but it still makes me uncomfortable. Though you didn't say anything about them you at least mentioned the Nepalese that lost their lives. I suppose we're making progress.

Commercial outfitters have ruined the sport. And the woman killed trying to sky off the mountain is an prime example of how far people will go for fame and financial gain. The woman had two children. How selfish of her.
Men never get the same sh*t for leaving orphans behind, that's kinda annoying. Most mountaineers don't climb for money, btw, they do it because they love it and if they're lucky might make money from it, but most don't. Even if you're not entirely wrong, it sounds awfully judgy. Even parents can't live ONLY for their children, they're people too. I'd say "by all means risk your life bit don't spawn" but I'd say the same if you're too poor to have kids, have severe illness in the family etc. In the end no one could have kids if you apply those rules. Tragedies happen, it's sad, but there we are.

Well, there goes being a police officer, logger, miner, lawyer (they have a high suicide rate), truck driver, electrician, military, …….the list goes on. There are lots of high risk things that people do every single day. Shit happens. We don’t blame the people who die.

How much to climb for 2024?
Manaslu....permit is about $2,000US. Probably another $10,000 or more to fly there, hire the outfitter, pay tips, expenses....maybe more, maybe less....it varies.
Can skiing a mountain that other people climb, and causing an avalanche, endanger the other climbers?
Absolutely, in fact, I believe that did happen on this trip. I haven't pulled back all the layers of the onion...but, for sure, if you trip an avalanche (even a small one) anything under you will be impacted. Thanks for watching
I’m almost positive I read that the deaths were all separate incidents, but I could be wrong.
I also feel that her frustrations on this trip may have played big role in poor decision making.
I don't see why there is mystery about the summit, it's the highest point. If you look up and there's more mountain, then you gotta climb it.
There are hundreds of peaks to enjoy in Nepal. Only a fool would attempt a summit in bad weather surrounded by inexperienced climbers.

How could they not have been going to the summit of Manaslu before. I thought you just kept going up until you can not go up anymore? Must have been an great illusion.
Great question....as you can see from the photo, it looks so obvious that the high point is the HIGH point...but, from the 'summit' that people had previously been climbing I think most assessed the actual summit as nothing but a flute of snow....it sure begs the "hmmm" response, though! Swayambunath is a Buddhist temple atop a hill in Kathmandu...which is where the ceremony took place.
