Time: 2-3 hours
Cost: $100
Skill Level:
Beginner
Tools List for Installing a Simple Tile Backspash:
- Measuring tape [amzn.to/2IVW694]
- Scissors [amzn.to/2XC77EI]
- Rubber float [amzn.to/2XCIpUL]
- Utility knife [amzn.to/2X4RMbw]
- Bucket [amzn.to/2Lpxs2o]
Shopping List:
- Square tile [amzn.to/2ZVR3eE]
- Tile adhesive mat [amzn.to/2XeTz2z]
- Pre-mixed grout [amzn.to/2REK0Ea]
- Degreasing cleaner [amzn.to/2XdmhRB]
- Drop cloth [amzn.to/2XhGfur]
- Painters tape [amzn.to/2JikkcO]
- Sponge [amzn.to/2IUPWWP]
Steps:
1. Clean the wall thoroughly with the cleaner to remove any grease or other debris.
2. Secure the drop cloth on the counter using the painters tape, covering the entire work area.
3. Mark the two sides of the wall using the painters tape where the backsplash should start and stop.
4. Measure the space you plan on tiling. Transfer the measurements to the tile adhesive mat and cut to size using scissors.
5. Peel one half of the back off of the adhesive mat, align the unexposed section to a straight surface like the existing countertop. Ensure the side with the thicker gap between glue dots is aligned to overlap the next sheet.
6. Once the sheet is in the correct position, stick it to the wall. Then peel the bottom half and stick that to the wall.
7. Repeat this process until the desired area is covered. Use the rubber float to push the adhesive mat to the wall for a permanent bond.
8. Hold the tile up to the wall to determine where it will need to be cut to size.
9. Use the utility knife to cut the mesh behind the tile.
10. Peel the plastic coating off of the adhesive mat, and carefully place each tile section onto the adhesive.
11. Once the tile is in the correct position, push it in place with a rubber float.
12. Repeat this process until the wall is covered with the tile.
13. Fill the gaps between the tile with the premixed grout and the rubber float. Apply it diagonally until all of the spaces between the tile have been filled with grout.
14. Fill the bucket with water and using a clean sponge, wipe the excess grout off the tile, again diagonally. Be careful to only wipe the grout off the face of the tile, not the grout in between the tiles.
15. After 24 hours, a haze may appear on the tile. To remove it, wipe the tile with a rag.
Resources:
To attach the tile to the wall, Tom used the SimpleMat tile setting mat, manufactured by Custom Building Proucts (www.custombuildingproducts.com).
Tom installed Desert Sunset mosaic tile, manufactured by MS International (www.msistone.com).
The homeowner selected “Earth” colored premixed grout, which is also manufactured by Custom Building Products (www.custombuildingproducts.com).
All of these, plus the other supplies and materials for this project, including razor knives, painter’s tape, and sponges, are sold at home centers.

I always love it when Tommy has an "idear".
What do you call a Deer with no eyes? (I have no eye deer).
@@joekind1 Ha!! Good one Joe.🤣. Funny enough, many Australians and New Zealanders will also add an "r" to the end of a word ending in a vowel sound like "ah" or "uh". Example: Idea-r, Spa-r, Sauna-r, Diarrhea-r, etc. And yet, they and Tommy, will drop the "r" where we are used to hearing it. Such as Car, Far, Beer, Bear, etc... Accents are fun.
It's when he goes "make sure it's nice and plum" for me lol
Should have done the whole kitchen. Looks kinda dumb in the middle of a blank wall
I was just about to comment this.
I love how excited she was the whole time.
An amazing wife right there.
I bet she runs to this channel when something arises around the house!😊
@Joe Kinchicken you mean his yard stick. ;)
Look how happy she is throughout the video :)
She seems both excited to have her tile piece + happy to do the work. I love this!
Tom communicates the information so well, and makes the process look so easy!
I always enjoy watching Tommy teaching. :)
For those armchair internet "pro's", what Tommy did was not only tell her how to do it, he showed her as well; under his guidance.
Now, she has the confidence and the know-how to do the whole wall if she desires.
The construction business is a tough business. It’s full of people that think their way is the correct and only way to do things and if you do it differently your an idiot who knows nothing. It’s nice watching Tom teach and help these people! And even if he does some things a little differently they always come out nice and he’s not a “hack” by any means.
I love how excited she was during the whole thing. I do agree with others that they should have done the whole wall.
Notice how he let her do more than half the work? He's teaching her how to tile so she can do the rest if she wants to. ToH has never been about giving stuff away as in parts and labor for free.
In my experience with these sorts of jobs the women around just love being involved in the project. Trades are all new to them generally.
Yuck.
@@kangkim150 He didn't teach her how to tile, he taught her how to apply stickers.
I like how he told her what to do and SHE did it. That’s how you learn.
I tried to do that with my wife, it didn't work
He’s a good teacher.
Tom is so patient and great explanations along with demonstrations!
I love the way you explain everything Sir
I think it should have been a little bit wider. Splattering stuff from a pan can still reach the old wall at the sides. But it’s a neat job it seems.
Thanks for your teaching & the technique. It's just to show how you could do it yourself so easily. Appreciate it. 👍👌
Thank you TOH for making these videos. They're so addictive.
Those tiles are so old fashioned. Ì got so excited when he lifted them up and there were the nice Subway tiles underneath.
So did I and the moment disapated and dispondance took a hold of me and everything went wrong from there on.
I think the subway tiles would look dumb. Classic square tiles are the best.

AMAZING VIDEOS! I AM SO IMPRESSED! THANK YOU!!
I am currently redoing my place. And I had installed new fixtures...blindly. Now, years later, I did a search on how to install a hanging light from the ceiling with no outlet on the ceiling and I got Scott's videos. I CAN NOT STOP WATCHING! The videos are not only informative, but they are RELEVANT to our times. By that I mean that he uses the newest technologies of today and makes it look simple. The videos are a good pace so one can not only watch, but retain the information so you can DIY!
I like the fact that whenever a homeowner wants to change out their backsplash this will make it a much easier process.
It’s also a good way to cut down on effort if you’re trying to fix up a home quickly for sale. I was sour on this method until I looked at this this way.
Well, the measurements were of course, just perfect to the backsplash. No tile cutting. Lol. Ridiculously easy in that regard.
Proud to say, I kind of did things the way he was talking about before watching this. :)
Excellent teacher! She did a great job...well done.
He’s always so good, wish I had him around !!
Just awesome I'm going to do every wall in my house now!!
Thanks a lots 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 very easy and clear explanation will do mine this week hurray🙋🏽♀️💁🏽♀️💁🏽♀️💁🏽♀️
We did a mosaic tile install just like this in our house a few years back, but ours used the herringbone style that he showed and we tiled about six inches above the countertop along the whole wall. We did have some outlets and switches to deal with getting around but as he said they don't need to be neat because you'll just cover them with the plates.
Did you use the tape? Is it holding up, and can you see the tape under the edges?
Wow!!!!A king's house....Amazing.....house so beautiful I am trying to see the beauty instead of the tile.....I likes the excitement in u thru out the whole job,& the finsh....I gets so excited working on my home, whether it's me & hubby or contractor doing his thing...I loves to see the finish..😀😀😀🥇🥇🏅
I like how they loved learning this project dude.
Saw this on tv the other day. Shoulda did the whole thing.
MikefromQueens it looks ugly but it'll look a lot better if they did the whole entire thing
MikefromQueens
MikefromQueens those tiles... Cost a mint.
@@AIPrecognition Quite agree.
@@Noahsoak Not really, HD had a sale. 1.60 on some for a sheet that size.
Beautiful kitchen, and great lesson
After watching this and another that Tom did, I feel like we can do this!
It's an improvement from the bare wall, but I think it would look better with a border on each side. She needs to get some end pieces for the sides, preferably all the same color to make a border. Could do that in 20 minutes, and would be very cheap.
Yeh, I was wondering myself about end pieces as well, but I think that Tom's idea here was all about DIY for a beginners, and thought it maybe too complicated to cut end pieces for beginners, cause you need tile cutters, etc. Wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Tom ended up doing that for her after the cameras stopped rolling- he's such a nice guy and a pro.
Let's remember this show was before CZcams it was all hands on teaching (people won't appreciate it now a days)
Love these "how to" videos. Thanks!
6:47 I could listen to this sound all day!
I used this same stuff after watching this vid and it works great, you do only get one chance to get the tile on correctly because this stuff is strong, mine came out perfect and after grouting no one can tell there's no thin set used.
You only get one chance using thinset as well.
What adhesive paper did you use??
@@tinabrown2223 it was the same product they used on this episode, don’t remember the name offhand but HD sells it in the tile supply aisle.
What a kind older gentleman 🥰! He was so patient in teaching her everything 😊
That was cool. Love these vids. help so much with things I want to do.
I love your videos! I’ve tiles & grouted white ceramic tile before but now I want to do a travetine (kind of pitted), so how do I grout that without getting grout in all the pits in tile? Any suggestions?
wow u made it look so easy i was waiting for the finished wall
Man this is way easier than I made it out to be in my head!
I always like to come down to the commment section after watching these videos so all the keyboard cowboys can tell me what he did wrong.
I like to see people like Jim D who enjoy being little bitches.

Those poor customers.. 40 years
4-6 weeks enough said.
Why are these videos so satisfying
All this effort and production to do four square feet of backsplash?
Mr. Silva, I removed my back splash and drywall for electrical reasons. Do you think that I need to use construction adhesive to put the new drywall up or will the screws be enough? Thanks!
When i worked at home depot our flooring guy was doing a demo of that tile adhesive for customers. He told me he would never suggest it but the managers told him to try and sell it/demo it
New things usually scare people, did he have experience with it or was he just afraid since it was new? I installed a waxless toilet seal and a plumber came to fix a different problem, the pipe under my floor, well when he removed the toilet he threw away my reusable waxless seal and put a wax seal on. Obviously he had never seen one before or else he would know not to throw it away...some of these old guys are afraid of anything new.
It's just glue, it probably starts wearing off after a few years. Yes, grout would do a better job but it's also a whole lot more work.
Notice they get paid by the hour, don't they? If it's that easy, who's going to pay them?
This is a good idea doing it the other way just seems so overwhelming
I can't speak for her skill level but me and my dad did my tile backsplash in around 3 hours for the entire wall. we used 12" rectangle tiles and had to cut around outlets but the project was easy. we did use a tile saw but it was an ultra cheap one; got the job done.
Gorgeous house
OMG. He made it look so easy..
This Old House : the handymen who have the clients do the work..😂
I have a question im currently doing the same project but the client wants it flush with the 3/4 backsplash thats already installed there... would i need to put a few sheets of cement boards behind it so that wjen i use my cement and the mosaic it'll me flush with it!?... or can i just put a piece of plywood to act as a cement board... first time doing something like this
love it! will this work to recover a countertop?
If you're tiling behind the stove, I think it would be better to tile the width of the stove, not the microwave. Also you can attach the tiles to the adhesive tiles first, (before you apply it to the wall to keep your tile lines from sagging as you apply it to the wall.
Agreed. At last tile to just before the outlets. When I cook on the stove I'm out of control lol.
What about the outside edges of the tiles? Do you just caulk those? Or do you grout those edges?
3 weeks ?!! I do that whole kitchen in 1 day!!!
I also wish I can make my clients work like this guy is hahaha
Is there a video on how to do this the right way?
nice vid thanks for putting it together.
Doesn't look right. I'd do the whole wall.
At least a border or something.
I'm surprised Tom didn't offer his usual, "...and now you can do the rest of the kitchen yourself."
Just doesn’t look right. Sometimes cheap and quick is not always best.
Joseph1NJ looks incomplete
watch it again, it was tommy's idea to go halfass bc she's a beginner & he assumed she couldn't handle it, or would take a month of weekends to get it done. she probably would have done a decent job had she done the whole thing.
Can new laminate back splash be installed on top of original? or best to remove old first.
He's a great teacher. Doesn't talk too fast. But She'll need to find time and do the entire wall. I doubt it will take more than a day and half days if she makes time for it. But this looks fun. Makes me want to see what i can do with my bathroom. Kichen is renovated so I'm not touching it.
Could you use that type of square tile on a metal surface?
OMG! I have this Aluminum
foil for 20 yrs. as my back splash. Now I can do a more classy one myself.
Now my problem is how to get rid of those birds on top of my stove inside the vent.
How does this peel and stick stuff hold up over time though?
Now if they decided to do the whole wall instead of just the stove top, would it still be okay to use the sticky sheets or go with plaster?
So I can use these sheets instead of the the traditional tile adhesive?
Hello Mr Tom . The jack of all trades .Master of making all body happy 😁 . Is that paper strong enough to hold the weight of the tile for all over the kitchen . Can it be use in the shower area too. Thanks
Looks neat
Yea ! Loved it
Hi - How reliable is this technique in a standing bathroom shower, please advise, Thanks
Can I install that in the balcony?
I doubt that most would be so lucky to have the exact width and height to match the tiles to a whole tile. It would be nice to cover this very common situation.
They make a hand cutter. Haven't tried it yet. Still working on making a flat wall! Lol
During cooking creating steam, so, are those tiles are still in place?
I have never used that backing but I don't think Tom would have recommended a backing that would have problems being over a stove. You know that housewife is so proud of that tile.
Why? It's on the other side of the tile.
The ladies love Tommy!
I used that with my back splash. Easiest thing to do.
Can this type of tile be used on top of original laminate? trying to avoid removing original laminate.
I wonder with the heat from cooking will it unstick the tile/paper from wall
What if my wall is orange peel, this adhesive sheet won't stick well. Is there an alternative that would work for orange peel walls?
Can i do that over tile? Or do i have to remove it?
Nice looks 👍
Can you use those sticky sheets on floors, too? Or only walls?
I would be curious to know the difference in durability between the giant sticker and thin set.
We tried it and it didn't stick well to the tile. Ended up pulling it all off and using thinset. Also, it is way more expensive than thinset.
Love the sticker stuff works fine two years later and I cant pull it off the wall without damaging the drywall. Thin set is easier to remove. Owner wanted to use sticker, now I have a issue removing the old tile. Did I mention this the second time putting drywall in for his backsplash. Dont use it unless you're stupid and install it wrong then it's coming off with ease or if you want it to stay 4ever.
Where to get the same tile used in this film? I need it to match existing kitchen backsplash.
I tiled my whole entire backsplash and had no previous experience and it turned out great. Agree this looks unfinished. Should have at least put some larger tiles around it as a frame and paint the rest of the wall.
how long those tile will stay on the wall? adhesive tends to peel overtime.
Tommy is the man , all of his work is awesome , this is stuff homeowners can do on there own , she might have to replace it in a couple years , so what she got to meet tommy fucking Silva , the man, myth and legend. Anyone got a problem with him got a problem with me
2:15 pleased to see I bought that exact same sticky tape stuff :)) lol
Great info
I started on this project, and does anyone know if doing this way will last or the tile will fall off the wall over the years? Help!
I like the longer tiles
Lol everyone in the comments is a professional contractor with 30+ years experience, yet they spend their time watching basic ass CZcams videos
Jay Smith reminds me of watching Karen videos where every slack-jawed yokel has a personal attorney.
"That sounds perfect!!!" Yeah...right lady. You can tell she was not happy and wanted it all backsplash like I would. You came all the way out here to do just behind the stove? In fact, I don't think she was sober. She was smiling the entire time and raging inside especially after he gave her all those directions and said you have to eat out. Double whammy!
Vary nice. Were can the adhesive backing be purchased
Would these work on log walls?
Hi how are you sir a got a ask if can i instal backsplash on my kitchen but there are tile exist
This is awesome
Great job and great instruction, but the design of the backsplash doesn't seem to match too well. Too much brown!
I thought it would have looked better if they did the whole wall instead of just behind the cooktop.
Well, she got the one day tutorial, so she can take it from there.
It at least needs a border
Its her taste, she chose the tile and shes happy. You might not like it but its her house.
I disliked this 90s kitchen and I know very well, it probably cost them 80k+ if they had it done. Lol. Cabinets being cheap laminate. I don't like the handles.. it's dated.
The other thing, you'll notice it all goes right up, not even having to cut ONE tile. Lol
Really awesome
What is that sticky adhesive paper called so I can find it ? Most are smooth, don’t have those perturbing glue spots on the double tape.
She sounds so amazed
Anyone know if that sticky stuff is a better way to go then the mastic stuff?
This stuff holds up with the heat from the stove on it?
What's that double-sided tape stuff called? Can't seem to find it.
That’s great! But how would you cut the tile if you’re using the subway style? You would have to use a wet tile saw right?
No you can use a scratch blade. I've done hundreds of subway tile by hand. It's the same as cutting glass.
That's okay, Tommy. I'll be preparing a fine bowl of gourmet Chef Boyardee.
