  • This BBC2 continuity dates from 31st December 1989, possibly introducing the programme that bridged the transition of the 80s into the 90s.
First is a promo for the Ruby Wax comedy vehicle Hit and Run, and last comes the opening credits for a show dedicated to the best of rock in the 80s. In between there's a mention for Clive James and Elvira. Not often those two are mentioned in the same sentence.
(Please remember that this is an off-air VHS recording, so don't go expecting 1080p HD quality. I'm fairly certain that this video isn't commercially available, and I've uploaded it for its historic interest only. That said, if you are a copyright holder and object, please don't hesitate to contact me.)

Thanks very much! It's fascinating the things that have survived all these years on tapes dotted around the country. If you get the chance to upload what you have, I'd love to see it. :-)

Couldn't agree with you more! It may be silly to say, but my heart lifts when I get hold of a VHS with old continuity on it!!!

You won't regret it - every tape is like a time capsule in its own way!

Nice capture! I'm lucky to have the closedown from this particular night, with the announcer featured here (Mark Devlin) describing himself as Mark 'I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again' Devlin! The close came after Heavy Metal Heaven, proving that was the last programme before closedown.

Amazing the memories an old video tape can stir, isn't it? :-)

No problem! It really is great to see what people have on tape from across the UK, indeed! I've been meaning for many months to try and upload stuff from the tapes I'm fortunate to have, but I would need to find out the best way to do so; rest assured when it does happen, the closedown I mentioned will appear!

I never thought of it like that, I suppose we ARE the last generation in that regard, yeah. I feel quite fortunate, the VHS' I have are all my parents'; as you say, in future, technology is so advanced that the simple pleasure of locating a VHS with already-recorded presentation of it is going the way of Ceefax and analogue itself. My dad told me once he has something able to convert VHS stuff, I'll need to look at that.

    I remember watching this, I was 15...

We're the last generation to experience this, aren't we? I mean, no-one is ever going to discover something on their Sky+ box that they recorded 20 years ago...
If you've got a DVD recorder, that's likely the easiest way to digitise VHS tapes. If not, then a USB video capture device is probably the way to go.
