The tidal waves of grief must be horrible, too. When my late veterinarian, Dr. Heit (RIP), had to put down my 18-year-old kitty, the poor thing wept while he did it, apologizing the whole time that he couldn't save him, and whispering "such a sweet kitty", over and over again. When he died of a sudden heart attack a few years later, I couldn't help but think that his huge, kind heart was just broken from all the sorrow of having to put down so many animals he cared so much about.

Perhaps Dr Heit's heart wasn't broken, it just couldn't hold all that love.

We should question why so many people HAVE to put their pet down.
Recently, I read about a vet who didn’t want to euthanize a cat and advertised for the cat to be re housed. . The owners wanted it put down because they were worried about tripping over the cat, presuming an older couple, the poor cat was diabetic which makes it real hard for it to be rehoused. Finally a rescue took him with others offering to pay for his meds etc.

I recently learned of the exceedingly high suicide rate among veterinarians. Vets are not trained to navigate the emotions of other people going through incredible grief yet they deal with it all the time. It must take an incredible toll. I have lost family members and of course there was tremendous grief with those passings but I wasn't, necessarily, observed. I do think that only my vet has seen me in my deepest times of grief.

The suicide rate among vets is high because the vets have access to the drugs they use to put animals to sleep. If everyone were to have easy access to these drugs, the vet suicide rate would not be unusually high.

Such huge respects to vets. I could never handle it just because of cases where you can’t save someone. When I had to put down my kitty, I was hysterical, bawling and sobbing. Everyone there was great at handling me in that moment, but damn it must have been hard for them. Already sad that they have to put down a kitty they can’t save, and then on top of it they’re also dealing with her hysterical human.
Plus aside from the sad fatal cases, even just day-to-day veterinary work, being any form of medical doctor takes so much knowledge and skill, but especially when you have basically no way of communicating with your patients! Even with human toddlers and kids you can get some level of communication, but with pets (and also human babies) you don’t get to communicate at all, and that would be so tough.

I lost my tuxedo cat this morning... 20 years she's been my constant companion. Been to 5 funerals of family members and never cried but I had a good one this morning. Was always there for me when I was sad or depressed, I could just hold her and she'd nuzzle me and lick my forehead. Now I'm the saddest I've ever been and I don't have her to hold anymore. Never thought losing an animal would be so tough but then again I never thought I'd have a cat in my life let alone be so crazy about one until I found her in an alley 20 years ago. Glad to see a new video from you. (edit) Ok judging from the topic and the comments I think I'll save this one for later...

hello from france Dr. as a breeder I had the privilege of doing an internship in a veterinary clinic. a great opportunity to observe part of the veterinary profession. I attended surgeries, pre-euthanasia consultations, etc. I was able to observe how the discourse of the veterinarians was modulated according to the public. the stress to respond as best as possible to all the questions of the owners and the work of the assistants. 2022 in France, the profession is in crisis, the rate of suicide or burnout of veterinarians has increased sharply. owners must hear the pressure exerted daily on veterinarians, who have pursued extremely long, dense and difficult studies please.

Today I found a new vet for my cat. He really enjoyed my Nehemiah because he saw how intelligent he was, how fine an example of a tabby he was and how much we wanted the best for him. He has a limp after having 3 pins and on screw put into his left front leg. We only want the best for him and if there are additional things we can do to improve his quality of life we are all for it. For many, money is a big factor but we have good insurance for Nehemiah and are willing to pay whatever it takes to keep him healthy. I was just so excited to find a vet like you who truly loves the animals. I think he appreciated our approach as well. It has been a very happy day, except, Nehemiah is not to happy about getting his nails trimmed. BTW, the vet said it was best to leave them long in summer if he goes outside for defense since we have foxes, mountain lions and other creatures at large. We had the nails trimmed today since Nehemiah hates the cold and it was 5 degrees here this morning in mountain central Idaho so he won't be going outside until spring..

Have a deep sense of admiration / appreciation for veterinarians. Due to that pets having comparatively short lives compared to humans they have to face death on a rather frequent basis & know this has carrier a burden. Vets get to know their patients and hard on them to when they are very sick and have to be put down. Greatly appreciated Dr. Burstyn advice concerning giving subcutaneous fluids - thank you very much sir! Has helped keep my cat going for over a year beyond when I thought was going to have to put him down. I'm in a catch 22 situation where as an animal lover and someone who suffers from PTSD, I _really_ want to volunteer and work with cats in a shelter. I have a lot to offer them and they have a lot to offer me as well. ...but at the same time, I'm just not emotionally strong enough to see them suffering or being put down. I wish I was but I literally just don't have it in me at this stage of life. Even going around and feeding the feral colonies here on my island is tough because so many of the cats are in such terrible health and there's nothing I can do for them. It hurts me to see them like that. I'm currently looking for a no kill shelter that needs volunteers to just come in and spend time with the lonely animals while they're waiting to be adopted. That would be a perfect situation for me and I really think I'd be able to do a lot of good.
I have SO much respect and admiration for vets. Even without the PTSD, I don't know if I could ever do what you guys do.

This man has a very good "bedside manner", so to speak. Kind and gentle, but with an underlying grit. The most important part of this video, in my opinion, is what he touches on at the end, that the world is filled with both good and bad people. Unfortunately, here in England, there's a lot of animal a*use, and appalling treatment of very young people who can't defend themselves. It makes my blood boil. This is why I've stopped watching the news, listening to it, or reading it. In fact, the final video I posted on my channel covered just that topic. The reason I've stopped posting videos is because my health fell off a cliff, and I look like a shadow of my former self. I'm not looking for sympathy there, I'm just explaining my position. I refuse to be seen on camera like this. Look at my videos, I look immaculate. Anyway, keep up the great work.

Through talking to pet owners, I get the feeling, some know always better than the vet.
This must be awful for the vet, trying to help their pet , but always being disturbed by the owner.
You must trust your vet and of course there should be a " I like him/ her ! I like the way he talks to my best friend and us ".
If not, find someone else which suits you more.
Since the 6 th of SEPTEMBER we have a new cat. We are the 3 rd owner in his short life of 7/8 months.
CATNIP is the best what could happen to us after the loss of our best girl of 17 and a bit more years with us.
    We were torn between : yes-no !
In the end when we saw his face, no doubt, you belong to us.
CATNIP is ROCKET-MAN, designer of our big flat, wake up clock, our " no , it's not bedtime yet ", 2 am is the best time to play with your best friend CATNIP, I throw you toys into your bed etc. etc.
With sleepy eyes I throw the toy somewhere. This is what he expects me to do , only to bring it back. And once more please.
Meanwhile I am allowed to sleep through.
Looking into his wonderful eyes, watching when I take a shower, sitting on a tiny wooden stool, watching me cooking , he loves to be with us or only being near to us, whatever we do, we have done the right thing. Our Rocket-Man will become older, calmer, but let him live his young life as he does now.
By the way he is an indoor cat, but occupies all rooms, even the bathroom.
He has a huge scratch tree facing the balcony , many outside trees, the birds flying by, birds we feed. There is a lot to see. . He can't get bored, I hope so.

Doc, I would like to ask a question, I know that this is not a consultation and really you would need to see the patient... would love that to happen but I'm in the UK and I have had past trust issues with 2 of the vets at our local practice. I have 3 Ragdoll cats (1 male 9y/o, 1 male 4y/o, 1 female 4y/o), all 3 have been spayed or neutered. Being Ragdolls, whenever I try to change their food I am then faced with at least 2-6 weeks of extremely loose and non-forming stools. All of their foods are dry, I use the Royal Canin Sensible which 2 are able to stomach, but the 4y/o male does not form stools at all. Have recently changed them to Royal Canin Sterilized. Whilst this has almost overnight stopped any stomach issues but massively increased stool smells (I've checked, not Giardia), I'm now getting a little concerned that they are not going to be getting the right balance of proteins and nutrients have gradually begun losing a little weight and their coats getting dull, however playfulness and energy has stayed the same. The 4y/o female and 9y/o male, have responded partially well in the past to slowly changing their diets. But I am at a total lose for my 4y/o male.
Any advice or feedback, would be most gratefully received.

This year I will join a university. I don't know which one in particular, but I am looking forward to vet specialisation. I thought about becomig a vet when I was, like, five years old or so, and then, during elementary and middle school, I was jumping from engineer to correspondent, from interpreter to teacher, but that all led to no result. I still want to work with animals, not people, not papers, I just... Can't.
That's prelude, I am saying that I'm in fear of becomig a vet. I really want to (there's not a lot of good vets in my region), but being sentimental when you are doing a job like this is hard. Even though I've stoicly went through my 11 year old dog's death (tumor, and I wasn't told precisely where and how it was affecting her. My parents are keeping that in secret), I fear that I'll have to put to rest many animals for whom I carry so much. I'm not affaid of cutting a frog, I am afraid of losing someone friend's life.

HI Dr. Uri the other night I got home from work to find my partner brought me lillies for my birthday and he put them in a jug with water on my kitchen table as soon as I walked inside I found one of my cat's chewing a leaf, to cut the long story short I rushed both of my fur babies to the vet's at 9.30 that night and they are still in hosptial a few days later they are on fluids the good news is at the moment they are showing no signs of kidney failure the Dr is keeping them in for another night of blood work and fluides to make sure. its costing me a few thousand dollars. Can you please do a video on lillies and cats. People if you have cats have no lillies AT ALL around them they are very toxic to cats, even just sniffing lillies can be fatel to a cat.
P.S I dont know if my other cat went near the lilles but we treating her as if she did go near them.

The worst part of being a "pet owner" is being a shill in a system that enjoys watching me fail. I was diagnosed with ptsd and most recently psoriatic arthritis. I have a broken down body of my own that I cannot afford medical attention for, doctors that think I'm malingering despite the fact I'm a 5 foot two eyes of blue woman who has worked construction most of her life in bitter cold temperatures for very little money. Now, to add insult to injury, my little, sweet emotional support kittie has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and CKD which I am dutifully and compassionately attending to even though it takes every penny I have. I neglect my own care to render thousands of dollars of aide to her because that's the kind of human slime I am. Peace!

I have an off-topic question for you.
How do you feel about owners that want to give their cats vaccines themselves? My niece picked up two under 6 months old male cats from a bad situation and right now does not have enough funds on hand to be able to pay for vet services She is in Southern California and all the local vets seem to be very expensive. They are a lot higher than I pay in the state I am in. I know that we have to have the rabies done by a vet or an approved person to get the needed tags. I am just not up on giving cat vaccines your self. I just wanted to hear what you think on the subject. Thanks, I always enjoy your videos.

I would, and I mean this sincerely, rather be treated by my vet practice than by the UK's National Health Service (envy of the world). I've seen the outcomes and the compassion shown by both, and the former vastly, _vastly_ exceeds the latter.

My elderly arthritic female kitty is 5 lbs. overweight, chronic problem and very food motivated. I don't overfeed her but she does not lose weight. I'm considering feeding her just one meal a day (renal diet) and a small snack about 4 hours after, then no food until the next day/meal time. It's rather like 'time restricted feeding' which I do for weight loss. Any thoughts/suggestions?

I have done 4 stool test at the vet in the last 12months, all they test for is parasite and the vet always says he is fine. My 1 year old Ragdoll is still have random gooey (in red) at the end of his poop. We monitor closely and notice his stool always starts off in good form/shape and then close to the end its always soft runny and then comes those gooey stuff. Can't seem to figure out what is wrong.

Please, don't be THAT client. Vet care is expensive. My vet offers a monthly membership plan that includes all routine wellness checks (basically the same stuff I get), unlimited diagnostic visits (client pays for tests), vaccinations, microchip registration, vet visit before travel, etc. I also carry catastrophic insurance, which essentially covers what the membership doesn't. This means that my vet can focus on providing state-of-the-art care without having to worry if I can afford it (because I can;...). She likes this approach because it reduces the number of times she has to put a cat down whose life might be saved if the guardian could afford treatment--the worst part about being a vet. I have really bad medication intolerances that are very similar to those that cats have. My cat's vet's phone numbers are in my medical records--consider calling her for advise if you have to medicate me. I have rare medical problems. My cat gets higher quality primary care than I do. I get higher quality specialty care than my cat does, even though specialty vet care in my region is up there. That's because I'm an 'interesting patient' and have med school professors treat me.
I'm a hick who is stuck in a big city (and wants out). Us hicks really do appreciate it when you can actually call the vet in the middle of the night over a sick, hurt or suffering barn animal and the vet jumps in his or her truck and is at your place--and doesn't complain. There have been plenty of times I wish my vet could treat me, because the vet is a more skilled and experienced doc. than the town human doc. I wish there was a way for country / rural vets to get cross licensed so that they could treat humans if they so wished, as a physician's assistant (training paid for by tax dollars, because the vet will be providing medical care to underserved populations). A lot of vets who work in the hicks are better trauma docs than the town doc. I would also like to see that people appreciate the contribution to public health that vets routinely make as part of their practice.

The best and worst parts of being a pet owner: You do not know whom to trust; your vet, your pet shop...? Could you, please, make a video on Hill's Urinary Care cat food? Our vet put our cat on it after he had a $1000 treatment to remove crystals. Now, he has dark, plaque-covered teeth which will require $700 to clean plus, he has some crystals again. How did the older generation keep raising cats on food scraps and without problems?! Also, why are there big chew treats available for dogs but not for cats to help keep their teeth clean? All of them, even the bigger ones, our cat just swallows; no chewing going on. Thank you ❤
