When this was showed off, I think everyone was collectively surprised with the fact that this actually looks not only really polished, but it actually has a TON of depth to it. I'm so hyped for this, I'm glad that finally stepped up since Ultra Trash.

The 15 characters shown in this Nintendo Direct segment are likely going to be the starting roster, and all the characters you want in the game or are controversial (e.g. Birdo, Diddy Kong, Pauline, Shy Guy, Koopa Troopa, Koopa Paratroopa, Dry Bones, Metal Mario and Pink Gold Peach) are likely going to be unlockable characters or obtainable via participation in online tournaments.

Also, at 4:27, it is stated that for partaking in online tournaments, one can get special in-game outfits (e.g. Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi in their regular outfits) or even unlock new characters (possibly including certain fan favorites).

The last time I played a Mario Tennis game was Power Tennis on the GameCube, I had a lot of fun with that game but didn't bother with the handheld Mario Tennis games because I never had an 3DS.
You weren't missing much.

The first four games in the franchise (N64, GBC, GC and GBA) were all great. The two latest ones left quite a bit to be desired. But this one does look promising
I like this risk and reward system they're going for. Definitely better than "Oh now you can do an overpowered ultra smash that's an automatic point."

I always thought that Ultra Smash was a prototype for this game, it has similar graphics, the game only has 3 reskinned courts, and the game as a whole felt like a tech demo that was haphazardly released quickly.

This is quite the game.
I was hooked since the initial reveal in January 2018, and now look at it.
The DLC of Mario Tennis Aces fixed some issues with Story Mode, added Ring Shot as a fun minigame, threw in some neat costumes, and most significantly, gave us _30 characters_ to play as.
This is definitely my third favorite Mario Tennis game. A notable improvement over Ultra Smash and Open.

I actually play tennis in real life, so I’m hyped. I have a switch and I used to play the Mario tennis game on the WII yes the WII. I can’t remember the name, but I’m this game is half as good, I’ll enjoy it!!!

Cherry Jubilee What do you mean by her, "new design." Her design in Odyssey has been used many years ever since the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series took off. The only difference in Odyssey is the fact that she is in HD, and has a sparkly dress. Anyways, Im here with you hoping for her in this game.

Another Mario Tennis game that was on the Wii U; I heard it was pretty lacking to say the least.
I am extremely excited for this game! I remember spending so many hours with the one on Gameboy Color. I love all the extra strategy and multiple ways to play. Good job Nintendo!

I love how this game looks, back in January I was worried as it looked too much like Ultra Smash, but based on this trailer it looks promising. I love how there's now a mode without the trail behind the ball, I'm surprised they've never added a mode like that before.

The important part of this game is “Every move you make presents a risk”. So even a Special shot can be blocked, that was messed up. I can use it like a 50% chance on scoring or 50% chance of breaking an opponent’s Tennis racket and that also affects on my Zone Shots and Zone Speed, too.
Also, I saw on the blue rectangular thingy below the audience that there’s “Mario Bros. Tennis Club”, “Princess Tennis School”, “Ultra Drink”, “Gym Bowser”, “Super Star Sport Store (SSSS)” and “Toad Racket Factory”. I’m not sure if there’s some sort of reference to Real Life tennis or something related to that sport or it’s just their sponsors.
