    Get a fire blanket, don't use aluminum foil. You can burn right through foil if the flame touches it (notice how he put the flame to the wood in the first clip but didn't touch it to the foil in the second?) Also, don't erase the writing on the valve handle, it sometimes contains the valve ratings or certifications. Just hang a tag on the handle to label it.

  • @Backyardmech1
    @Backyardmech1 Před rokem +2

    I did something similar with the copper pipe soldering, but used a sheet of .030 aluminum sheet stock. 😅 I was a 17 year old kid who was interested in doing some handy work around the house. Drilled a hole in a copper water line hanging cabinets (thankfully) in the garage, made the repair, and finished hanging the cabinets.
    EDIT: If you have water constantly dribbling into the area you’re trying to solder that messing up your flux. Mash some bread into the pipe ends you’re connecting. It’ll absorb the water long enough to make the connection and soften up enough to pass through an outside faucet.

    • @76biggdogg
      @76biggdogg Před rokem +1

      Bread trick works . Now days we just use a sharkbite fitting or pex and a clamp. Soldering is going to become extinct soon in my opinion. No fire risk at all using the newer options.

      @@76biggdogg I hear you. Copper is getting too expensive now to plumb homes with. After 20 years or so I’ve seen PVC, to CPVC, to pex. The easiest way to label a value if it's clean copper, you can write on the pipe with the same marker. Skip the primer. You can sometimes slide the rubber off the handle and put it back upside down. Also easier than using the primer. Another way easier than primer is masking tape. I also have multiple colors of electrical tape for labeling electrical connections in a junction box but masking tape is good to have and it's not expensive. Get a 1 inch or 1.5 inch roll of blue and one that's plain light brown. The regular masking tape is permanent after a week or so. Blue tape is removable for a few weeks or a few months so it's better for temporary labels.

      Just drill a lil hole and pump a bunch of gripfill in there around the pipes until it can’t rattle anymore then caulk over the little hole. Secure is secure. Only the next person who remodels the bathroom will judge you.

    I use a scrap piece of round duct as a shield for my torch. It’s bendable as needed.

      DON'T scrub off the manufacturer info on the valve handle. This is tantamount to pulling the tag off a mattress; you could get a prison term and possibly DEATH SENTENCE.

    Wait, does the foil also keep heat away? I use the fabric cloth they sell at the Home Depot and while it works fine, it was $14. I'm actually going to try foil next time.

      Be sure you use heavy duty foil. The regular stuff can catch fire pretty easily. Both sold in supermarkets.
