Im almost done with the game myself and i gotta say it was actually a pleasant experience for a switch port. Yes, it is really ugly at times, but being able to constantly hold 30fps instead of prioritizing graphics was actually the best decision. It's fun to play, and that's what I enjoyed about it the most!

We've seen much, much worse newly released ports on the Switch taking a lot of patches to correct as much as possible. I feel like Sonic Team isn't getting enough credit on the port, this is absolutely playable. Hardware is currently the most limiting factor to make the game shine
It has nothing to do with the hardware. There are graphically superior games with better performance on the system. This is 100% bad optimization on the side of the developer.

@@Jenema2 Sure, I know there are. Doom 3 and Metro 2033 Redux comes to mind, but the sheer speed of Sonic's gameplay must be a technical challenge that's not often seen elsewhere on the Switch. Correct me if I'm wrong. Hot Wheels Unleashed features speed and big environments, but I think Frontiers' worlds are a bit bigger and less static than that. Anyway I do hope performances improve nevertheless 🤷♀
@@Zerorenren4761 You're absolutely right. Sonic games are fast paced in terms of gameplay, and keeping up a game like Frontiers in a piece of hardware that is clearly pretty dang outdated must be really painful, and they did a pretty good job on porting the game onto the Switch, ngl.
I cant tell till i played it myself, i loved sega but i really need a demo. It looks like it needs 5 year time for mods to make it great on a pc. Just got switch though

Honestly I had the choice and the biggest deciding factor for me was the portability. Yea the visual downgrades are there, but it’s been perfectly playable so far. I might double dip in the future to see this game at its peak tho.
I got it on pc but thought about the switch version , but I got steam deck now so im gonna mainly play pc but if I want probable ill just play on steam deck

It's worth noting that pop in is an issue on Ps5 too, with platforms popping into view and dissapearing around the same distance. I think that particular aspect of pop in is present on all platforms.
True, but Sonic at anything less than 60fps just feels wrong

You’ve gotta be kidding… And after seeing the lack of eye candy in this video, I was thinking of buying it after I finally get my hands on a PS5 in 2041. How can more powerful hardware be worse than the former PS4 hardware?
@Alamgir Never claimed the PS5 was weak. Quite the opposite, in fact.
The two biggest flaws for me (I'm about 3h in) are the assets loading/unloading (those flowers really get on my nerve, for instance), and the fact that some important things like platforms aren't loaded if you're too far. In Zelda Breath of the Wild you could climb somewhere, see something really far in the distance, and think "oh that looks interesting, I want to get there!". Here you just can't do that. Far in the distance is... nothing. Sometimes it's even worse than that, when you're like "I see this big thing here, how do I get on top, there doesn't seem to be anything around", and only when you get much closer you find that there is a ramp, or a platform.
Overall, I'll continue playing it but I wouldn't be surprised if I find myself distracted by another game soon enough and put Sonic away without finishing it.

Thanks for the performance review. I played 6 hours of the game yesterday and I had a blast, that's what matters to me, I really didn't look ar the graphics and I finished deadly premonition 2 on switch so I know about bad performance and if a game is fun I'm ok (deadly premonition was not ok but something kept me going even with the abysmal performance 😂)

Thank you for the video! I was curious about the performance and most videos don’t cover the switch version. Still think I’ll get it but I’ll wait for a sale on this one.
The fact this is running on the Switch at 30 frames per second and looks comparable to the PS5 version is a true crowning achievement for the programmers. It's obvious and expected for it to run better on the PS5 with all that horsepower under the hood. I have both the Switch and the PS5 and I still bought it for the Switch given the fact that it's portable and I can take it anywhere! No regrets. Sure, I'm missing a few things here and there, but hey, I am not complaining!

You know, even though it's not as pretty or smooth, it's still impressive what developers have been able to get running on the Switch.
Most of the graphical downfalls just remind me of old games. Retro points for me.
Can we talk about how there’s nothing to distinguish which character is talking lol? Apparently sonic will be having a conversation with an NPC and the dialogue for both sonic and said character, are both the same size and color font, with no avatar and no name or any way to indicate who’s talking lol. As far as the sound, I didn’t have any issues with the quality. I did find the music to be repetitive and I didn’t find it to be similar to breath of the wild. With my gameplay, it seems there was a soundtrack continually playing. The really cool thing though was that whenever you fight a boss it seemed like the music was an amped up version of said song. Or at least something that goes with it.
Feels unpolished in a few areas TBH, I have a feeling it's not going to go down overlay well in the long run. Mark
@@SwitchUpYt Honestly I was too busy admiring the game and figuring it out and playing it to really get upset about everything. Definitely the most bad ass and epic sonic game. I’m just getting disappointed with performance in these.
Been having an absolute blast with this for 9 hrs straight! Graphics havent been bugging me at all as im wailing on baddies and blazing all over the map. Hope they plan to release the soundtrack cause ive been vibing the entire time.
Is there much to do in the open world/areas?

@@ziggystardust156ok just in case im gonna say possible mild spoilers ahead, but ive kept this as vague as possible: theres actually quite a bit, there are challenges that help open up the map, these are quick puzzles of several types or a timed challenge of several types, there are platforming sections all over the place to complete, with varying length and difficulty, many different types of enemies to fight, multiple small ones and some open world bosses. Nice amount of enemy variety, some requiring certain techniques to take down(and the combat is hella fun). The huge open world bosses are awesome with several types per island all of them being vastly different from one another(and all pretty epic). And of course theres also finding the koco which are all over the place. Now the rewards for doing all this are all the same tho, its all resources for either upgrading, talking to friends to continue the story, unlocking a cyberspace level, or unlocking a chaos emerald. Also when you complete a challenge a rail shows up next to it that connect the different challenge areas togather(which is really fun once you complete all the challenges on a map cause then you get to zoom around the map with ease) and of course theres the cyberspace levels and fishing minigame(the fishing minigame is pretty addicting). i can go into more detail on the different types of challenges if you want.
@@thomasdavis8722 thanks for the feedback! You’ve actually made me really interested in picking it up now. I was worried from the trailers and early gameplay that the world would just be a big open world with nothing to do in it. Are the graphics as bad as people say?
@@ziggystardust156 i cannot speak for other versions, ive only played it on switch, it runs well and looks ok. Typical switch graphic downgrade with some extra pop in, not only with the foliage but with some of the platforming structures in the sky. But as i said in my og comment nothing that takes away from the gameplay. For me id notice oh hey theres the pop in, then seconds later im fighting a group of bots or trying to complete a challenge or just zooming around and i forget about it. Though, if you dont care about having the game portable, and have access to another platform. Then i would recommend getting it on another platform cause it will look nicer. As for the style of the game, the open areas are nice neutral colored(tho to be fair i havent seen past the 3rd are yet so the later areas may be different) wide open areas with ruins sprinkled all over the place(most of which are integrated with platform sections to explore or with the map revealing challenges) and some eggmanish metallic platforms sprinkled in too. First area being lovely green fields with some trees, gray hills and mountains, and the second being a deserty area with many canyons and some dunes. Meanwhile cyberspace levels are much more your typical modern sonic levels, busy looking with the contantly moving cyberspace skybox and many different types of objects and platforms and things in each of the different level styles( green hills, chemical plant, etc) oh and the enemy design, ohhh boy. I love how they look, very angular and smooth. The boss designs in particular are really cool, in style AND game mechanics. Also cant believe i forgot to mention before that the movement feels NICE you get to adjust many aspects of the movement so you can finetune to just how you like it. There ya go, another essay my dude lol. Lemme know if you have any more questions!

Also having a bit of a giggle with the particularly low res and messy things I find, but over all, even at “144p quality”, it’s really quite fun!
I was honestly expecting it to be much worse on Switch (after all, Sonic ports haven’t been the best), so I’m pleasantly surprised!

Why would you buy a triple A game digitally. This concept always mind boggles me. Even with10%, you probably paid $60-70 for a game that is permanently stuck digitally in your console, has absolutely zero retail value, and can basically be discontinued at any given time in the future.
Even if you never plan on re-selling the game, I just can't fathom why people do this. At near full price, for what reason would you possibly not want to have the actual tangible form.
Digital is for buying $5-10 indie games that are cute for 5 minutes of fun and nobody actually cares about *or* for games that unfortunately lack any physical release altogether.
This makes me cringe so hard lol. You're literally paying for less. I could see it at 50% off maybe but like ...

Digital is easier for me for a variety of reasons, including physical disability, handling small cartridges is a frustration I choose to avoid (think tremors, muscle spasms, etc. I’m more likely to drop a cartridge when trying to insert it into the Switch).
Plus making backups exist, it’s possible to download games to the SD, copy or move the files to a hard drive so they can be easily swapped out without re-downloading. That’s how I have my Vita library and it’s worked brilliantly, even if USB cables can get fiddly.
Then there’s PC gaming, hardly anything comes on physical media now and Steam is pretty much essential. All AAA games are expected to be there, and if not, they’re available for download elsewhere (such as Epic, GOG or their respective publisher’s store).
Basically, you do you and enjoy your physical collection and I’ll accept that I need the convenience of digital downloads.
@@BendyNeko Okay. Congratulations you have a very special and niche situation. There's probably less than 1% of gamers on the globe who are physically unable to hold a switch cartridge. This comment assumed normal circumstances, which is generally what most people with digital buy under. Usually because they "like it more".

I have a PS5 but I still got it on the Switch version to play it in handheld and I'm having a blast playing it.
The popping and the slow texture loading is present on every platform. It's not so visible, but it's there. :) Overall very good port.

Thanks. The really bad pop in of foliage during open world movement looks pretty distracting. Aside from that it seems like a pretty decent port. I'm on the fence to get it or not. Might wait for more reviews.
The pop in is on every platform, is not a Switch problem, it's the engine they use for the game.
Just want to mention that asset loading in and out and floating platforms despawning is present in all versions even on pc, the draw distance is just poor in general. Same with the static looking rain and some other smaller effects.
This is the first video i've seen of some clear video footage of the switch version in action, its rough but i'm glad the framerate seems stable enough.

I needed this video earlier today to decide what platform to buy this on but couldn't wait to play the game. So I bought the switch version. It isn't as pretty as the PS5 version but god damn the gameplay is so addicting it doesn't matter.
I think the game is fine it run alright I am like the game didn't think sonic open world would work but it does sure it could be better but I still enjoy everything about it nice work hope to see more game like this.
Silver lining I guess is that it runs at 30 fps. I wish it was running a bit better but given the limitations of the switch... I do agree that if you have the option to play this elsewhere that's definitely the way to go. To bad though because sonic games typically don't do it for me but I was very interested in picking this one up from watching the trailer.

Text size options should be standard for every handheld/console games, newer games have microscopic text nowadays like it desained to be played on pc monitor 30cm from your eyes

One of the things I like about the Switch version is that the cyberspace stages don't have the glitchy graphical effects. Those just looked distracting in my opinion.

Honestly, I bought it on steam first but got random, very irritating slowdown as the world opened up, so I refunded it and bought for switch since that’s the only platform I have. I’ve been having way more fun now without any big issues so far. Sure, it looks better elsewhere, but it works and that’s the most important.
Here’s the good question I’ve always wondered. When you do the handheld mode do you use the original switch or oled cause I enjoy these reviews but it seems like your using the oled in handheld and if so, can you use the switch lite or original switch for the hand held tests?

The better frame rate, resolution, graphics and textures is why I’ll be playing Sonic Frontiers on PS5. I don’t want the flaws and issues prevalent on Switch to detract from my experience while playing this game.

I have both the Switch and Steam Deck. It looks like Sonic Frontiers on Steam Deck plays great. Plus the good thing is that since it's on Steam, I can also play on my laptop which is capable of gaming. That's why I got a Steam Deck, I'll be getting 3rd party games on Steam like Sonic Frontiers so I can play either on Steam Deck or on my laptop. But I can see visually that Sonic Frontiers on Steam Deck has more details compared to the Switch version.
I got this for my kid but ended up putting it in my switch and ended taking a one hour crap on the throne and getting hooked. Convinced me to get it for series x and wrap his up for Xmas

Will probably get in on the Switch even though I have PC and Xbox just for portability's sake. But I'm really wishing for a hardware upgrade for the Switch. Thinking about Aya Neo or Steam deck for the future.
Apparently it’s not all smooth sailing on the Deck either. There are stutters, flickering lights and black shimmer. Not sure about the pop ins though 🤔

@@porgesomer so according to other reports, these problems are present across all versions including PC so it’s likely due to the game itself instead of the hardware it’s played on. After a bit of tinkering on the Deck, you can negate the flickering by setting FPS to 40 or 50 (some have found 40 to be more stable) but the rendering distance is still there regardless or workarounds. There’s also no way to get 60 FPS either.
But TLDR; likely nothing to do with Linux or Windows but more to do with the game running poorly. Hope it gets patched soon.

I’ve got a Switch copy coming from GameFly sometime soon (hopefully tomorrow). As you said, the downgrades are expected. The last 3D Sonic I played start-to-finish was Sonic Adventure 1 on the Dreamcast. I played about half-ish of Sonic Unleashed, but grew tired of the “werehog” levels and dropping through the floor in seemingly random ways in the regular Sonic levels. Sonic Generations was markedly better, but I don’t think I got to the end of that, either. Mostly I just care if Frontiers is fun and engaging.
Colors was the best imo, better than all the sonics imo

I'm curious about the game itself in other plataforms. Is it really that resource demanding? Because it looks good, but it's not like it has the best graphics ever. well if it was made to look good (4k 60fps) on ps5 and xbox, it's a pain in the butt for devs to squish the game down to switch. A very big pain.

Hey theres a way to make the game look better and run a little better set the video output to 720 and in the graphic settings take off the morion blur, do this and image quality improves dramatically also i do use an m classic maybe that also helps.

Unfortunately I'm in that position of trying to find that PS5 I want; which is hell. But as soon as I got past the idea that it's not the open world fluidity I want, it is really enjoyable.
It's Sega, but I can hope they improve it over time with patches.
I only have the Switch version and I’m very happy with it. I fully understand that it is an underbaked Gameboy version, and I knew it going in. The game works well enough for me.
Performance isnt perfect on XSX either, lots of hitches and glitches. Game feels rough. But it is fun! I actually notice the pop-in in videos of gameplay rather than during gameplay. Playing it, Im too focused on what Im doing
I want this game and the only other console I have is a PS4 that's currently in disrepair. I might wait on it just because it's about to be pokemon season for me. Might grab a PS5 or something and get it on there
I bought it on switch so it can also be a Christmas gift for my son. I plan to enjoy it as well,. I don't know how that's going to be knowing that I have an Xbox Series X that could run this game as it should.
Have an xbox and Switch, so I could get better performance on the xbox, but my son only plays Switch, and has his own, so I’ll take the visual hit and he’ll have a blast as long as it plays smoothly.
I think any of us Sonic Frontiers players on the switch can recall having to look up a tutorial for a particular scene and then seeing how neat the tutorialist’s graphics were; only to later realise they must’ve been playing on a PC or PS5.
I’m glad they were able to adapt this game neatly enough onto the switch, but I hope the next nintendo switch compensates for the performance.

SwitchUp, I remember chatting with a friend and straight up comparing this game's graphics to a damn PSVITA game due to how it has HD elements, but... That resolution and texture quality, best way to compare it is if Borderlands 2 on vita KEPT A STEADY 30FPS. It may look terrible, but... Considering the hardware and power of the system. It's passable or impressive..

I knew it wasn't going to be as good as other platforms. I got my copy yesterday and I'm excited to plsy it. I don't really care about graphics etc. I'm more interested In the story and I just can't wait to plsy it and unlock tbf story and explore everything. But after watching a youtuber plsy it on the PC I knew it wouldn't compare at all bc it's the switch. But who cares I don't bc it looks awesome. And I think it's definitely a game I be returned to. But first need to first persona 5 royal 😂😂

Sega had said they included fsr to upscale it from 720p to look a tiny bit higher resolution. But I've seen other switch 720p games to look better. If anything fsr looks like it downgraded the resolution.
