    The first 2 hours I played the game, I thought it somewhat fun, but thought I would get bored of it pretty quickly. The next time I played it, it was like a magical switch flipped in my head. It might be because I got used to the controls, but suddenly I went from forcing myself to play it for a couple hours to not being able to put it down. That's pretty much how I felt until the second-to-last island, then I started to feel like the mini platforming challenges scattered around the world were starting to feel a bit too repetitive. If it wasn't for the fishing mini-game, the last island would've felt like a slog. Overall I really loved the game though, I look forward to seeing what they do with this formula in the future.

  • @davidcbeaudoin
    @davidcbeaudoin Před rokem +13

    The game has its warts on every platform, the Switch just has the unfortunate fate of being the most cut back version. That said, I've logged about 20 hours in the game and can't put it down. Being able to really open up Sonic and blaze across these huge open islands while hitting bumpers, grinding rails, and homing attacking stuff is an absolute joy. A lot of 3D Sonic games in recent years felt like they did everything they could to stop you from maintaining speed. Frontiers doesn't. It does suck that it's only 30 frames per second, the pop-up is egregious, and sometimes the wild momentum can feel unwieldy, but I'm having fun with it!

  • @ShurikanBlade

    The reason I think Sonic frontiers is divisive is well because it's Sonic. No other game controls or even remotely feels like sonic. Sonic is like an acquired taste. It's hard to get into because it seems like you're supposed to go fast but when you do it feels like you're punished for going fast because of enemies or pitfalls or walls. There's more complexity and replayability when it comes to Sonic but most people who aren't into the series dint really understand that. It's why Sonic team really tries to streamline the gane and made it super generous with everything because they know a lot of people don't understand Sonic. It's the same reason why when you see online footage of the demo version a lot of people playing seemed like they've never touched a game in their lives. Since sonic is jusy vastly different that in most cases it feels like no other game.

    This is a good template for sonic moving forward, absolutely had a blast with this game on switch, I would like more of a story out of the next game and a meatier campaign / post game. Gameplay can be tightened up a little as well, but the framerate was never an issue for me.
    30 fps never bothers me as long as it's solid and smooth.

  • @Graxer
    @Graxer Před rokem +6

    My take on Sonic games is that being able to go fast is a reward for mastering the game and mechanics. In the modern games you should never be too hasty to use boost unless there is a clear path ahead of you. Once you learn the layout of a level so well that you can just run full speed through it, it is an amazingly exhilarating experience. People that are unfamiliar with Sonic games see experienced players boosting at full speed through a level and try to do the same without the experience. It just leads to them getting frustrated and having a bad time. Sonic Frontiers eases this slightly by forcing you to level up your speed gradually, but it isn't perfect.

    • @prl4122
      @prl4122 Před rokem

      I don’t think those are the things that people tend to complain about regarding sonic games tho, like in a lot of sonic games going too fast isn’t bad because of not knowing the layout, it’s bad because going too fast usually causes the game to glitch out and cause you to die because you don’t interact with an object in the correct way

    Personally, I think the critic score average of 7/10 is spot on. I love the core gameplay to pieces and had a blast with it (and the widely available fan-made physics mod just make it even better), the OST is fantastic, and I love how the story goes back to the style of the Adventure games' storytelling and builds on both the characters and series lore. That said, the game is brimming with rough edges and cut corners: awful pop-in, jank as hell camera, and reused level themes, layouts, and even islands towards the end of the game just sour it for me. That said, it is still my favorite 3D Sonic game behind the Adventure titles and Generations, and is a marked step in the right direction.

      For me, the only real issue Chaos Island was its overreliance on 2D segments, felt like they had run out of budget or time and needed to rush some of the challenges. Other than that the rail grinding could get fairly tedious, I think they could've spaced it out a bit better so not every segment of the island was connected by rails.

    • @ians_parks
      @ians_parks Před rokem +4

      @@dmk_yt For me it was the primarily the over reliance on 2D. Accidentally running into a spring or boost pad and having your camera hijacked as you're forced into a 2d section that is usually pretty annoying to break out of. Also those blue markers you had to cyloop in the previous islands to find hidden collectibles like extra memory tokens now just reveal more boost pads and springs. Not far from others in the same path. Its underwhelming especially if you already completed that challenge. Also the fact that the map is far more segmented than the previous islands forcing you to search for the grind rail that connects them rather than being able to run straight there from your current location. I think the pinball challenge to get to the titan boss speaks for itself.

    From one content creator to another, I’m not trying to start beef but this whole Frontiers review has really thrown me. What frustrates me about this whole saga regarding your NL reviews is that a 4/10 is a drastically low score, especially when compared to other games this year that could be seen as worse with less content that screws over the player by drip feeding content, which you have given high praises of 9/10.
    Sure, there are divisive factors to Frontiers for sure and its by far not a perfect game. Especially on switch, it runs like garbage. I’m by far not a Sonic fanboy - I have been HIGHLY critical of Sonic games in the past. But I’ve had fun with this game to the point where its nowhere near the review score it was given. Giving this a 4/10 compared to the 9/10 you gave Mario Strikers - a game with next to ZERO content, characters and modes at launch and essentially lied to us regarding its online capabilities - something does not add up here. The inconsistencies with NL review scores this year here are to the point where I for one am starting to see NL reviews as either a little bit biased, or there’s issues with picking the correct people to conduct reviews.

    As someone who's never been a huge fan of the Sonic franchise, I was pretty pleasantly surprised by this game. The open world aspect felt fresh and invigorating, the classic-style cyberspace levels were fun and (mostly) intuitive, the soundtrack was amazing, the movement mechanics were (mostly) fun to experiment with...overall? Great experience!
    I will say though, some of the Cyber Space levels had some glaring design issues like the one where you had to jump from spinning stone platform to spinning stone platform. Can't tell you how many times I just fell off into the void because of wonky camera angles. Also, passing by too closely to certain overworld enemies locked you into weird camera angles that I wasn't a fan of. I also found a pretty game-breaking glitch where I got launched outside of the game's skybox so there's definitely some bugginess to the overall experience but it didn't detract from my ability to enjoy it.

    Feels like this is just an ok game, but Sega could definitely build off of this in a second entry with this style. My main issue is the level design & how awkward it looks within the world you’re exploring. The other areas that you go to like “mini” stages are more connected and consistent to their overall design. The “open” areas just don’t.
    Sega has the skeleton of a potential decent game on their hands. Just this outing didn’t stick the landing fully. Maybe next go around, but considering Sonic Team’s track record, they haven’t earned the benefit of the doubt in delivering…

    If they don't like it then, it's understandable. 30fps on Switch is a necessary compromise, but you should not criticise the game for that, I think?

    There are way more items than are ever required and they just sit there in your inventory.
    Purple coins quickly become worthless because of the slot machine every night and because of that the fishing minigames becomes a short cut to being overpowered for everything.

Nintendo Switch version looks a bit rough, but it ran quite well with no noticeable frame drops; if it’s all you can get it on it’s still solid, but get it on something else if you can. It’s got a lot of mostly small issues, none were gamebreaking, some were annoying, but it was lots of fun and the good’s do outweigh the bad. It’s definitely at least a good game, but it obviously won’t stick the landing with everyone. I give it a solid 7.5-8/10.

That's not what's fun about this. I love it for the same reasons I love Breath of the Wild, it's just a place to exist in and look around and see what you can find.
