    Yes! The Bee. Guess I can stop requesting it. For some background information: most songs by Amorphis are based on Finnish mythology, this one included. If I remember it right this song is about the mother of a great hero asking the gods to bring her son back to life. They send his soul carried by a bee. Bees are messengers by the gods is also found in Greek myth btw. You guys might also like Amongst Stars by them. If you want less growling in their songs try Brother and Sister from the same album as The Bee.

    • @FlatBeeF
      @FlatBeeF Před 5 lety +6

      ackshchually... Pretty close. The mother of the Lemminkäinen (the hero in question) first collects his parts from the river of Tuonela (similar to river Styx in greek mythology) After picking the pieces she sows him back to whole and asks the bees 3 times to get some honey to revive Lemminkäinen. First two times the honey was not powerful enough so then she asks them to get some heavenly honey from over-god Ukko which then succeeded in the revival.

      @FlatBeeF Před 5 lety +6

      @@AgeofJP Yes you can think of it like that, and to be precise, the whole album Silent Waters tells the story of Lemminkäinen until his death.

    This was a pleasant surprise! Tomi Joutsen has impressive vocal skills, he do both clean and crawl vocals. For me "Queen of Time" is no.1 metal album that came out last year. 10/10 album. There is also some variation in songs, and for instance 'Wrong Direction' doesn't have crawl vocals at all.
    Amorphis has taken much inspiration from finnish epic called Kalevala, tales and folklore from ancient Finland. Their first album came out 1990, so they are seasoned veterans what comes to melodic death metal. Musically big influence for them has been finnish psychedelic rock band Kingston Wall. Sadly lead guitarist/singer committed suicide -94, because that band made really amazing music. Here's a sample, that reminds of The Bee.

    Great reaction, love this song. The best advice I can really give for learning to appreciate the growls is just to realize that all the power there is on your side. Use it, feel it, relate to it and use it for catharsis. After a while it really becomes soothing, as strange as that sounds. Keep on keeping on, and good luck with your journey. Much love.

    This really is a story 😁 Someone gave really good information about the song. If you wonder, the both style singing is by the same person: Tomi Joutsen. And I can guarantee that he is the best growler in the world. So much power but clear at the same time. I've struggled to like Amorphis for years but this album and this paricular song knocked me out totally. I tuly love this album and went to see them live and tvey ofcourse played The Bee as a starter 🤘

    Oh and the song is probably inspired by the story of Lemminkäinens mother. Lemminkäinen, hero of Kalevala and all around troublemaker, got himself killed, hacked to pieces and thrown in river Tuonela, the river of the Underworld. Lemminkäinens mother wants to save her son and persuades first smith Ilmarinen to make her a rake from copper and then descends to underworld to fish the pieces of her son out of river Tuonela. After finding all the pieces she sews her son back together but is unable to bring him back to life. She begs the bee to ascend to the halls of Ukko and steal a drop of honey. Armed with such a powerful remedy she is finally able to resurrect her son back to life.

      Yes, a lot of Amorphis lyrics are really only understood if you know the Kalevala, the Finnish national epos.

    • @pietrayday9915
      @pietrayday9915 Před 5 lety +1

      Thank you for the backstory! I think I can better see where Kel is onto something there with the different styles of vocals representing different characters - the harsh voices of rough gods and a more angelic chorus of the mother almost casting a sort of spell.
      Orphaned Land, a band that plays a very similar style of music, released a concept album about the Biblical flood a few years ago in which the harsh metal vocals were definitely representing the voices of the angels of God delivering warnings to sinful men and unleashing the wrath of God upon the earth, while the "clean" vocals would represent the voices of men and human prophets.
      Similarly, there was a folk metal song by Hadjutanc where the harsh vocals delivered lines spoken by an evil king to his victim, while the clean vocals delivered the lines of his victim and and narration.
      I think it's a cool effect!

  • @creislaw4821

    The hammer is actually hammer of Ukko, the big cheese of finnish pagan pantheon. While finnish mythology was heavily influenced by viking mythos (Ukko ~= Odin + Thor by job description) it's its own separate entity. In finnish mythology the bee is considered to be bringer of life. Amorphis is known for making songs that are inspired by stories in finnish national epic Kalevala.

      Not really. The bees going in the skulls of Kings is their own invention, not from the Kalevala story, where the bee coming from Heaven is based to. Think it was actually a bumblebee, a more original inhabitant of Finland than the European honebee, which I guess was brought there by people.
      Or maybe that king's skull part is told elsewhere in Kalevala, just not in the Lemminkäinen story which is the famous one, and where this song is loosely based upon.

    Screaming and growling is like a cold shower. Initially you get really defensive and shocked, negativity, etc. When you slowly start to embrace it you start to feel to power and strength. It's quite an uplifting and empowering feeling. You kind of have to internalize the anger that is voiced with it and make it your own, so that you feel the rage aswell. The singer is so to speak your angry companion. Best I could come up with to explain

    This is not straight based on the story of Lemmikäinen's death as the song "Silent Waters" is. Rather that in Finnish mythology a bee is seen a healer and a life giver. I guees here you could see also the circle of life; skulls of the dead kings and the bees bring life in to them... Amorphis song are usually based on Finnish mythology and the Finnish national Epic Kalevala
    From the Finnish Epic of Kalevala;
    "Honey-bee, thou ether birdling,
    Fly a third time on thy journey,
    Fly away to high Jumala,
    Fly thou to the seventh heaven,
    Honey there thou'lt find abundant,
    Balsam of the highest virtue,
    Only used by the Creator,
    Only made from the breath of Ukko.
    God anoints his faithful children,
    With the honey of his wisdom,
    When they feel the pangs of sorrow,
    When they meet the powers of evil.
    Dip thy winglets in this honey,
    Steep thy plumage in His sweetness,
    Hither bring the all-sufficient
    Balsam of the great Creator;
    This will still my hero's anguish,
    This will heal his wounded tissues,
    This restore his long-lost vision,
    Make the Northland hills re-echo
    With the magic of his singing,
    With his wonderful enchantment."

    I think you should try "Amongst Stars" (feat. Floor Jansen of Nightwish).
    And please react to "Ayreon - The day that the world comes down". 😍

    Vektor - Recharging The Void
    It's Blackened Progressive Thrash Metal...not sure you'd like the vocals, but the music and guitar work is outstanding.

    So the hammer your seeing is Mjolnir which is Thor's hammer which is Norse not Celtic. Amorphis is from Finland and their music is more folk oriented metal. The growls usually illustrate the darkness of the lyrics so it is necessary to a point. I hope that you can come to terms with it 'cause Amorphis is an amazing and under-appreciated band that needs your love. Anyways, peace! \m/

    To me this album is a masterpiece and this song is the weakest one of that album but it's still awesome. The song Amongst stars..., think you will like that one more.

      This is unique in so many ways. And if you don't like - that's ok,of course. It's metal, but definitely not typical. Very experimental.

    good song... but take it from me... Bruce Dickinson.... it could have used a little more cowbell.... Now I'm just a musician who puts his pants on one leg at a time like the rest of you, but when I do.... I make gold records... so listen to me... Bruce Dickinson.... MORE cowbell
