These pointers are not only relevant to boxers but also other styles like karate or Taekwondo.
The hardest thing for me to learn was the narrow stance and chin down (karate to kickboxing).
Narrow stance was never a problem. My main influences growing up were Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard and they both used a narrow stance. The hardest thing for me to overcome was keeping my hands in a high guard and blocking strikes instead of using head movement which is much faster with the hands down. I did overcome it though.
Thank you for your priceless fighting experience champ
Would you ever fight as a professional boxer ?
I underestimated the elbow blocking to the roundhouse. My right foot got shot. I'm still healing after two weeks. I can feel it when I put my shoe on.
strickland won and became champion with alot of these "mistakes" just a testament that pro level is about making the right mistakes.
Weird that you put this video up after I went through it yesterday, and it is just as you say, I practice box and wrestling, am trying to learn kickboxing to fill the gaps but, since I'm short, I've always had a lower stance for getting in the pocket and grapple if necessary but, in kickboxing, it is frightening to eat a knee and, I also feel that using the shoulder slide is going to get me kicked in the stomach, anyway thanks for the vid man, these have worked wonders
You've been a content machine lately
Hey gabriel something I feel doesnt get talked about enough is footwork SPEED how to fight fighters with fast footwork and how to increase your footwork speed. There is 2 video ideas that would be nice to hear your thoughts on
I asked you to tell us how boxer should fight in kickboxing few weeks ago so I believed it's for me 😜
I have a tall et tight stance.
My problem is more about don't be ripped off by knees at half distance when I throw power shots
Could you please make a similar video about the mistakes kickboxers do when they transition to MMA?
One important issue I see all the time about the transition from boxing to kick boxing or muay thai is reassessment of angles. Because of the stance adjustments required to allow you to kick optimally, practitioners feel very uncomfortable and slow while trying to kick from angles they're accustomed to. So they end being conservative and relying on their pure boxing with addition of eventual low kicks.
True! I finding this same problem now.
Can you please make a video on how you prioritise sleeping over other things.
I transitioned from Boxing to Kickboxing after 2,5 years.
Problems my trainer pointed out back then:
- too wide stance (to have more punching power, bc you dont worry about lowkicks).
Honestly just catching lowkicks made me change that by myself.
- Sometimes dipping to low when boxing to the body. Too dangerous catching a knee.
- I struggled to implement mixing kicks into my punching combos
So basically what Gabe said in this video.
Any videos on important head movement for KB/ MT? tq
You couldn't have timed this much better for me, thanks!
Love this channel men, thank you!!
Thank you for the video master
Gabriel this was a very educational video.. oh man, try to write a book or an encyclopedia about all of your instructions (no kidding)!!!
Damn this really help a lot I’m a boxer transitioning into MuayThai/kickboxing
Thanks! Great videos.
Gabriel is the best! Love this channel! So many things I ponder about but nobody else makes videos on these things. Thanks buddy. Keep em coming. 😃
Best kickboxing and striking channel ever
Solid content, as usual. I'm a boxer that likes to get in close and grind it out, and your advice on pulling back a bit more for my short range punches was a missing piece for me, and a much needed coaching tip. Thank you🙏🏼
Great advice, as a former boxing practitioner just starting Muay Thai , I was suffering from these problems shown in the video . I also like how Gabriel explains the differences between slipping . Thank you Gabriel .
How to deal with a kickboxer that moves around a lot or throws a lot of feints
Press CTRL-SHIFT-ESC and kill the process.
Hit them
Huh, the first thing I ever learned was a long stance with 70 percent of my weight back, from TKD. Switching to boxing and trying to stay even after drilling weight shifts for years is tough.
Plzzz make more videos this topic
Specially explain difference between boxing footwork and kickboxing
Does boxing footwork work in kickboxing ?
You can kick & check kicks with a wider stance if first initiating with some torso leverage [eg. slip motion].
Great content ! Thanks again!
Have you ever overtrained b4 ? Don't know if age affects my rest times as well ? I'm nearly 50 , I kickboxing at class once a week, boxing on punchbag at home once a week, judo once a week. Practice some grading stuff at home once a week. Run twice a week. Skateboarding min twice a week 30 min to work. Strength conditioning 2 times per week. I do split days like run in morning then strength pm. One good restday.
Some weeks I'm really knackered!! Will also look at nutrition. Thanks for your advice. Peace be with you.
I had a lot harder time going from Muay Thai to kick Boxing, than Muay Thai to boxing. Boxing is so different from MT, that I had no problem learning from a "blank slate". But I had a lot of difficulties with KB, because I had to stop my self from reacting with some techniques while the set up felt very close to what I was used to.
Hey man. Love your videos. Can you make a video if how boxers can be effective in mma and what are the down falls by not having boxing in your arsenal for mma?
Dude listen to Nate Diaz talk bout it
My favourite is muay thai but i would love to go back to karate and blend the styles a bit
Curiously enough, some of the changes must be rechanged back if switching to MMA. for example the wider stance and not having too much weight on the rear foot, which is necessary to avoid being taken down too easily.
Even for a boxer who fights w a more square stance, too much weight over the front leg, especially after shots, leads to not being able to throw kicks after a set up. Many such cases!
I want your opinion on Tysons peekaboo style compability with Muay Thai
I also noticed that shotokan and boxing were more similar than people think. Can you do Muay Thai to Kickboxing transition? It is less dramatic than boxing/karate to kickboxing, but unlike the what the majority of the people think, kickboxing is not just muay thai without elbows anr clinches. Lots of subtle changes need to be made for a muay thai fighter to transition and not doing so will result in failure.
Boxing & Shtokan have almost nothing in common. Dude.
I'm struggling with the reverse transition
Excellent vid!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Any tips on how to stop boxers using the Philly shell in Muay Thai / kick boxing?
Kick their arm a few times( the lead one that is covering the body). Just one thing that comes to mind. Not to mention that bladed stance leaves the calf kicks wide open.
Exactly what Westen 89 said below 👍
@@GabrielVargaOfficial oh wow I got the Varga seal of approval. That means a lot fr.
@@treadstoned9915 🤣🤣💯 we all jealous bro.
One thing that came to mind. When kicking the lead arm can't the opponent counter u with elbow to ur leg/feet??
I am actually very curious to how both of u think about this.
@@CoenraadBrinks well the philly shell isn't ideal for catching kicks like you can with the thai stance bc it's hugged so tight to ur body but yeah I would recommend setting it up with punches first of course. No naked kicks or you could end up like Weidman, Mcgregor, and company.
CAN you please make a video on what tj dillshaw should have done agaisnt Corey I’m the same height as him and can see my self struggling wit the same adversities
watch his video on Sean O'Malley vs Moutinho, he explains that instead of plotting forward like Dillashaw and Moutinho did, you need to plot forward and then either draw a reaction from your opponent and counter or make a sharp movement to the side and attack.
@@nikolatomic1179 bet thanks bro
Gabriel I have a question though on this, what about how Bill Super foot Wallace fought very liniard side ways stance??? Could he's style work now a days???
he fought like that cause he was injured but to answer your question , you can fight if nobody is gonna low kick you , if they try use the strong side kick but if it gets grabbed/caught you're done .hope i cleared things up for you though ,
Video like this about kick/thai boxers transitioning to MMA would be great.
For the algorithm
Bobbing and weaving is bad too I got kicked in the face for doing that
Do yourself a favor and go through all of Gabriel Varga's videos before you start on your striking journey. You will save yourself years of fruitless training.
yeah , also jeff chan has some free valuble fighting tips on how to become a good fighter .
what are your thoughts on being southpaw if your right handed/ what would be the pros/cons? not exactly how i wanted to word that, but...there it is.
Hey hard2hurt made a video on why you dont want to practice southpaw if your right handed maybe go check that out also make sure to listen to the entire video before commenting
@@bruce4139 i seen it, i disagree with him. thank you though
@@brandonlee3306 your welcome, may I ask why I you disagree with his thoughts tho?
@@bruce4139well, the right in the lead will be more accurate and stronger, same as the leg. i also like the parry, from my own experience i personally am better southpaw than orthodox. i've only fenced a little bit, but i feel like it is similar. i like bruce lees philosophy and fight stance it works for me, orthodox is fun too i just get hit more. may i ask what your thoughts are?
@@brandonlee3306 well I'm a cross dominant south paw so this is coming from a weird angle (cross dominant doesnt equal ambidextrous look up the difference if you dont know it please it is a 1% population thing) but I find my right hand is more accurate and my left is more powerful which is what you want imo. A quick accurate hand in front, if you look at 80% of knock outs that are with the arms they dont come from the lead hand I dont believe they come from the back hand which you can load power into. The reason you get hit more in orthodox is because others know how to fight an orthodox you feel better in southpaw becasue it's what you practice plus you have the instinct to put your strength forward. In a fight you want to distract the hands then attack an opening that's just my thoughts thanks for being mature about it tho
Hello sensei new subscriber here
But wonderboy (ufc) mvp(bellator) rDgoat(gloryKb) etc use sideways stance wide stance but that work for them perfectly
In MMA sideway stance is much more ideal than in KB, because in MMA fighting distance is longer. RD is a great fighter and could win good guys with his style. But he had big problems with absolute top fighters - as you can see in his fight against Valtellini.
I think problem is a regular person does not have the abilities and athleticism these guys have.
So for like 95% it will not work, but there are always exemptions to every rule.
I am a former boxer and iam doing mma now and my kicks sucks 😩
Do a "5 things" about Shevchenko
she's crazy I think Gabriel would think she's talented. Her Muay Thai fights are crazy
She uses absolutely perfect technique
