I find that Elliott had a lot of warmth in his music that often feels overlooked (not to say it isn't depressing at times, his Self-Titled most definitely runs strong in that vein). But the media kinda chalked him up to being a sad-sack, coupled with the circumstances around his death, it kinda just stuck around as his defining trait. Of course, it's not exactly music you'd jump with joy along either. Hope you do more Elliott! I think Either/Or is a solid record, but Figure 8 is my fave :)

I agree that Elliott being labelled as depressing feels like so many critics missed how much warmth and philosophical emotions are in his music. So glad to see someone else mention this about him.

His old band Heatmiser is releasing some newly found songs next week. I found it funny you mentioned the dead air. Thats the name of a Heatmiser album. The Waltz songs are just songs with a Waltz beat which he didn't give names to. So Waltz 1, 2, 3, and 4. There is also No Name which are songs he didn't name. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. He had 3 albums with Heatmiser. He released 5 solo albums during his life time and had 2 posthumous releases. There are 4 albums worth of solo material which has not had official releases called Grand Mal which have songwriting which is just as good as what he released. He also released 6 albums while he was in high school. These were always incredibly rare but these have been released online by someone who was able to get copies just earlier this year. Many of the songs were reworked later into his solo material. You should also check out Lonesome Crowded West by Modest Mouse. Issac Brock's lyrics are fantastic and his guitar playing is very expressive.
I think that the true elliott smith fans all will gravitate more towards the self titled and either/or Era of albums. XO is okay, figure 8 is an improvement IMO.

I think the ending bit about Elliott Smith not being very sad is gonna age like fine wine once you guys get around to his earlier stuff.
