I don't know if you accept suggestions, but I recently saw the Mariah Carey Butterfly Reaction and wanted to suggest another reaction to Mariah Carey's debut album (Mariah Carey 1990). I think it's also a great start to Mariah's discography (and how she got to where she is now), also the Music Box album and Daydream are very worth listening . peace ✌️

I’m a bit late lol. But another neat thing about “b741” is that every song on the album at some point contains a 741 chord progression. Which is a fairly 70s rock kinda sound

Year of the Cup is probably the most underrated song on the album. Its a song about shame and regret from past mistakes. Majority of the lyrics are real things that have happened through Porter's career. "I took out all of my shame on a random guy who probably liked me," refers to a real event from the first Worlds tour iirc where he literally stopped the show and berated a fan for how they were acting in the crowd. He's talked multiple times in interviews about how he looks back on that moment with tons of regret but there were a lot of people on the internet at the time who praised it. Thus "I guess that screaming at my audience works and everyone likes it." Essentially, the whole song is a reflection of Porter's imperfections. It captues the feeling well of how when we make mistakes, we often think about them for ages, even though we're only human.

“Who the fuck is Bonny Bear?!” Living through this record winning at the Grammys as a fan was something else. Absolutely beautiful record!

For me, this album has the 2001: A Space Odyssey effect, that being that I didn't much like it the first time I experienced it, and yet I keep going back to it again and again because it does something strange to my brain

Fascination Street is about where they go to score drugs and other such debauchery. I dunno, maybe it's more relatable to us English but given their huge popularity around the world I really can't see that being the case. Doesn't every city have a 'fascination street' after all? For me, the best track on the album. Not the one that means most to me on an emotional level, but musically my favourite. It's also always better live as well imo.

'Last Dance' always makes me think of my now 18 year old daughter who's many miles away studying art at university in Yorkshire. She's also a huge Cure fan. The lyrics resonate with me on a different level. I know Robert wrote it about a lover (probably his wife, who he's been with since they were 14, but to me it's about seeing my daughter now as a woman and not the premature baby I first laid eyes on. For that reason alone it hits me on a very deep level.

I think Avalanche - Outtakes from Illionise is underrated. You should consider reviewing it.

Just as a quick note, the Daniel Smith listed as producer is the band leader of The Danielson Famile, whom Sufjan was a touring member with around this era. Pretty sure he did not work with Beyonce, Incubus, or those other artists; that's probably a different Daniel Smith. The Danielson Famile (and its verious iterations--their biggest indie "hit" was the album Ships which was released under the name Danielson) is a distinct musical highlight from the underground Christian scene and well worth checking out if you like music a bit off the beaten path.

Love the Sufjan series. Don't miss All Delighted People. Even though it's not an LP, it's on the level of his other stuff.

Honestly, I'd be fine if this album was the only one they released this year. It would only be the 4th time they released just one album in a year as opposed to the 6 years where they releaesed two (two albums a year seems to be the usual). A new one would be nice, but I am HAPPY with this one as a Beatlemaniac. It's so silly, but not silly enough for me to think it's annoying if I'm not also feeling really silly. It's got the perfect amount of fuzz on it too, it's just an all around good time.

The only thing I dislike about this album is that the only three songs I think are relatively weak- labyrinth, time machine, and stranded lullaby- are back to back to back. Especially because that kind of makes dream sweet in sea major, my favorite song on the album, kind of feel less special.

As a Gen Xer, this was the album that truly introduced the band to America. Another stellar album during that era is "Reading, Writing & Arithmetic" by The Sundays

B741 is the name of the first Airplane ever made by Boeing. Probably a reference to the Boing Engineer drama lately

Maybe its just the harmonies and vocals but this album gave me major beach boys vibes if they were making music today
