  • Hello,
    In this video we head west of Lake Vanern to the Swedish Lake District and spend a relaxing week paddling around the Lake Foxen area in an Ally Canoe.
    We used the DANO hut campsites, purchased a fishing permit and sat back and relaxed in an area that we pretty much had to ourselves in great weather conditions.
    Regarding my illness; we stayed at a campsite before the trip and the 'drinking water' tap was turned off, probably to stop it freezing during the night. I ended up using an adjacent tap from a washing up sink to drink water from, I later found out that this water was pumped directly from the lake. Tris didn't drink any as she had a large bottle of tonic water open, but I drank about a gallon. It's likely I picked up some sort of bacteria and it eventually caught up with me!
    Other than that it was a great week, here's a link to the DANO website if anyone is interested in planning a trip to the region -
    dalslandnordmarken.se/en/camp...
    Thanks for watching!

    Laphroaig good choice....
    I like to use Ardbeg Uigeadail or BUNNAHABHAIN - Eirigh Na Greine for Canoe Tours.
    Cheers
    Very nice film, we were at the summer an the Sommen last year.

    You could have come during covid to. Sweden didn't really had a lock down. Might have been tricky to come back home though 😄 And btw. you don't need a access card. In Sweden we have the right to roam nature. Allemansrätten.

    I grew up in Sweden, and have spent many days in the rain there. You guys lucked out with the weather 😂
    The only time I visited Scotland, we had fantastic weather for a week straight. Clear blue skies and around 20C temperatures. On the last day, the rain came down so hard that the windshield wipers couldn’t keep up. I guess we lucked out that week. For a variation of your meals, try “renskav” in a tunnbröd wrap. In case you haven’t tried it, it’s thinly sliced reindeer meat “shavings”. Not cheap, but very tasty. Although it requires refrigeration, so it’s probably not well suited for canoe trips.

      @Adventure-Outdoors  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Hi, yeah so far we've been lucky on our trips up to Scandinavia as far as the weather goes. Scotland not so much 😂. I'll look out for renskav on my next visit, I'm always on the look out for moose meat but I haven't found it yet; I assumed the supermarkets would be full of it but they don't seem to sell it at all. I still have a couple of frozen Falukorv's in the freezer though! I'm looking forward to returning to Sweden. Cheers!

      @henrikm4657 Před 5 měsíci

      @@Adventure-Outdoors you’ll find Renskav in the frozen section. You’ll typically find moose meat in the freezers of the hunters’ homes. You might find it in butcher shops (there aren’t that many of them left), or in well stocked grocery stores up north. Probably vacuum sealed in the specialty meats section. If you ever get the chance to try smoked moose heart, it’s delicious and tender.

    Really enjoyed that Ben. So lucky with the weather conditions, just a shame you happened to contract a nasty bug from the water you drank, although you didn't let it bring you down. Good for you. Glad to see other canoeist paddling a folding canoes such as an Ally. I hope you manage to paddle yours in as many far away countries as I have and more. You'll definitely get your monies worth for sure, and if you look after her, she will last 20 years or more - mine is over 20 years and still going strong. They have their pros and cons, but their pro outweigh the cons for sure. The simply fact that you can take an Ally across the pond and canoe trip deep into the Canadian wilderness for multiple days or weeks is what appeals to me the most. Ok, they maybe slow and they have an auto eddy as soon as you stop paddling, but I can live with that. The option of not relying on outfitters and paying their ridiculous fees is the greatest benefit. Keep up the good work Ben & Trish. You're both welcome round our campfire. Oh, here's a blog of one our trips in Canada in our Ally for inspiration: www.songofthepaddle.co.uk/journey-to-the-centre-of-the-universe-wabakimi-ont-t32424.html

    • @Adventure-Outdoors
      @Adventure-Outdoors  Před rokem +1

      Cheers Fred, thanks for watching! We thought the Ally was great, perfect for the type of canoeing we do and being able to pack it away in the back of the truck is a bonus. When leaving the UK border control asked 'what's in the back of the truck?', I said a canoe, she said 'must be a small canoe', obviously got a bit suspicious and called the rest of the guards over to interrogate me 😂.
      The only problem I had was with the keel pole, it became really bent out of shape at one of the joints (due to me being heavy handed with it I reckon) so I'm going to replace it. Other than that, it still looks new, barely a mark on the hull at all.
      I'll get a cup of tea and read your trip report,
      Cheers mate 👍

    • @frdrckcole
      @frdrckcole Před rokem

      @@Adventure-Outdoors I would imagine it would raise a few eyebrows with border control, he he. As for the keel pole, I bent mine during its initial assembly. I just crudely bent it back into shape and have used it since. In fact, many of my poles have bent over the years, but they don't seem to affect the integrity of canoe when built. The Ally canoe can surprisingly take a considerable amount of abuse, more so than you think. You just need to be mindful of the single skin along the sides (freeboard-draft area) of the canoe, particularly where the poles are in contact with the skin. Enjoy the read, I think there's a link to the previous trip in the write up. Looking forward to the next instalment, take it easy buddy, Fred

    Firstly. where you get your hat? I need a new one that's not going to blow off my head with every gust of wind. Secondly. Was Tris trying to catch the famous Swedish Tree Fish? 🤣 Finally. Really great video, brilliantly filmed mate, thought you really captured the peace and tranquillity really well, looked a stunning area and what with perfect weather, the lakes looked incredible! Shame you were ill with food poisoning or whatever the last day, hope it didn't spoil your trip. ATB.

      @Adventure-Outdoors  Před rokem +2

      Cheers mate, it was great up there, no one around! Aye the fishing didn't go too well, I swear there aren't any fish in those lakes 😂. The hat is a Tilley TWC7 Outback waxed cotton hat, really nice and I'd recommend one. You can pick them up for under £50, it's available in Navy and they're smart enough to wear around town. I've also got the TH5 Hemp hat which has a slightly wider brim and it's a bit more breathable for warmer weather, both excellent quality.
      I think the cucumber might've been slightly off 😂,ATB Martin 👍

      Hi mate, Tris thinks it was the cucumber as well!! 😂I'm just glad Norbett and Tom didn't write anything in the crapper on their 2018 Brokeback Mountain tour, that would've sent me over the edge 😂.
      No fish at all, we didn't even get a bite. The fishing permit only cost 20 Euros for both of us for the week so not too bad. They must know you'll have no luck 🎣.
