  • When will Jimbo be replaced is a big question, and maybe the most important for Aggies right now. There are buyouts, expectations, and the state of the team, along with the future to consider. Timing is everything!

    I think something else plays a part in all this and that's the fact that A&M is trying to be a top dog in a conference they don't have a history of dominating. A&M hasn't been a doormat like Vandy but has mostly been mid tier. If you look at all the top programs they have all historically bullied their conference or shared that role with 1 or 2 other programs. What conference has A&M ever bullied? Not the SEC, not the Big 12. They were however, at the top of the SWC, consecutively. Unlucky for A&M, though it was toward the end if the SWCs existence. So that domination was disrupted right when it was getting good for the Aggies. I think this plays an indirect role in affecting a bunch of other factors related to success other than just directly scoring one more touchdown. Maybe that's too mystical but I think it's part of it.
    Should A&M have joined the SEC? I dont see why not. A&M has increased its national presence, had shocking victories and kept above .500 all but one season so far which is better than the last 10 they spent in the BIG12

      I don't really question the jump, but right now, a decade of average play and results, I think it's at least worth a ponder. But all the things you say are true, although, if it's the house that Johnny built, we would likely still have that. It's hard to pin our prosperity in those areas to 8-4 seasons in the SEC in my mind. I think the biggest benefit we've had is to become more battle hardened. If we ever get over the hump, we will damn sure be hard to knock off.

    • @GridironMasters
      @GridironMasters Před 8 měsíci +2

      @@atmcoldchills Jonny took the house with him. A&M needs to build its own house. I am entertaining the idea that A&M thought it would be on top in a few years but in reality they are in store for a longer journey of building a history of being competitive, breaking out of its pushover slumber of the 00s. That means tough 8-9 win teams. Frustrating losses, close games. If that is the journey, Jimbo has been the man for the job. No quick way to the top.
      Look at all the coaches that have quick impact. Seems like they are all already at a program with recent championship history and conference dominance. Saban, Smart, Harbough, Norvell, Sark, Kelly etc. A&M doesn't have that and I don't think the #1 recruiting class is going to change that in 3 years.
      -- OR --
      Jimbo is holding A&M back and he just needs to get out of the way and get fired likd every other coach of the last 20 years. I lean to the former but reserve a small place for the ladder.

      @@atmcoldchills I also think firing RC Slocum was a major slip. Of course that is in hindsight but could ~5 more years of RC really have been that bad? Bowden got like 8 years of up and down seasons before Jimbo took over. RC gets 1 or 2? Just toss away your winningest HC? I think A&M has been paying for it ever since. I don't care how many Cotton Bowls RC loses. It ain't worse than 4-8 and a sports info scandal!

    • @davidhfranz
      @davidhfranz Před 8 měsíci

      You miss the point about Slocum. R.C. Slocum's problem was Wally Groff. That dumbass bean counter of an AD thought it was more important to have the stands full then to have a championship program. That's why the first thing Robert Gates did upon becoming University President in 2002 was to fire Groff. Groff refused to give Slocum the facilities he was begging for, which caused him to fall behind Mack Brown, Bob Stoops, Mike Leach, and Nick Saban between 1999-2002, when he was fired.
      R.C. Slocum was ultimately fired in 2002 because he committed a grievous sin, which was to have a losing record at Kyle Field. The 2002 season was the first time A&M had a losing record at home since 1982. Of course, a similar instance is why we were FURIOUS at Bill Byrne for giving Franchione a guaranteed contract extension after the 2004 season, when A&M lost to Baylor for the first time since 1984.

    Why question the jump to the SEC? That’s not even a question. We’ve profited from it and have the best facilities, increased fan base support and arguably more talent here than ever before. The coach is the issue

    • @atmcoldchills
      @atmcoldchills  Před 8 měsíci

      I responded below for more clarity. I don't really question the jump, some things we benefited from at that time, like the house that JFF built was likely no matter in my mind. 8-4 season is tough to credit the prosperity. I think the SEC has hardened us though. We aren't playing crap schedules, so I think we are ready to get over the hump in that regard. I wish the mental aspect was there and we might have already done it. But if this trajectory was always meant to be the long haul, once we get there, it will be hard to knock us off. But all the reasons you say are true, so I don't give it much credence to make the jump other than to just point the introspective questions we are having just based off the inability to attain what we have been after. It was beneficial if for not other reason than to get away from the horns.

    LSU is a winnable game like all the rest. Its been awhile since A&M fans could say that with every game. No reason to believe LSU has to be a loss other than maybe Connor being out. LSU did take a L last year. Who knows.

    • @atmcoldchills
      @atmcoldchills  Před 8 měsíci

      I think it's very winnable. I've thought that about every game, but there in lies the problem. I wouldn't say we "should" win, but I think its fair to say that like most games the year, we either win the game, or beat ourselves. When push has come to shove, we typically beat ourselves though in high stakes competent matchups. I hope we win out though, and then the bowl game. Finishing strong is important!

    • @GridironMasters
      @GridironMasters Před 8 měsíci

      @@atmcoldchills Despite everyone's disappointment, say A&M finishes the regular season with 8 wins, plus a win bowing leaving 9 on the season. That would leave Fisher with 3 9 win seasons ( and had they played that darn bowl game in 2021, 4 9 win seasons i think). Does A&M really want to fire another coach?
      I can hear people saying "but we didn't pay for 9 win seasons". Sure, then renegotiate the contract, add some stipulations, something to make people feel better since they are so concerned about A&M finances. Don't tell them about the 485 mil Kyle Field bills though. I get the feeling that at a certain point, A&M should realize, or the fans at least, that they can't spend a coach into a corner. To spend so much and then when reality hits, be upset that the likely results didn't match their imagination.

    Look back on what Jimbo did at Florida State before he left and look now at what he is doing to TAM. Florida State fans tried to warn ya.
    Jimbo needs a generational talent at QB to win a national title.
    The SEC is getting tougher with Texas and Oklahoma coming in and adding two tough teams that you have to beat to even win the SEC.
    If Texas A&M decides to fire Jimbo they better have someone lined up and not have to do a coach search.
    A name I see being tossed around some is Lane Kiffin , I honestly do not think that would be a good culture fit and he seems happy at Oxford (waiting on Saban to retire and get his shot there maybe).

      @GridironMasters Před 8 měsíci

      While A&M winning a national title would be nice, A&M hasn't won a conference since 98, I don't think they've won a division since then either. The 2012 Cotton Bowl was great but a comparable bowl hasn't been achieved since then either and before that, since 98. Jimbo was HC at FSU for what, 7 years? Every top program has great QBs. Jimbo had EJ and Jameis. Sumlin had Manziel, without which we would not even be hearing the Sumlin comparisons. I think Connor W. is the first real star Jimbo has had, that he recruited, at QB. Haynes, never developed but he also was injured all the time. Jimbo's had piss poor luck after Mond (Sumlin's QB) with QBs.

    The answer is after losing to t.u. in 2024. It would be at the end of year 4 of a completely undeserved guaranteed contract extension. On an unrelated note, I think the up tempo "offense" is the biggest gimmick in football. It attacks the rules and seams of the game itself rather than the scheme of the defense. I personally don't care to watch players competing to line up faster than the other team, helping out with ball placement (for that chip kelly style run a play every 8 seconds BS), not letting the DC do his job, not allow substitutions etc.
    I think it was against Alabama last year that they scored a TD on an up tempo play, there wasn't even a defender over where the pass was. At that point we're just watching the offense play against nobody. The offense already has the advantage on the defense because they dictate what happens and now the offense can exploit non schematic weaknesses? If I wanted to watch a continuous game I'd just watch soccer, a game with rules designed for continuous play.
