- Now that Spring Football has finished, Fox Sports’ lead college football analyst Joel Klatt ranks his Top 25 teams heading into next season. He reveals his #1 team and discusses how he decided between programs like Texas, Oregon, Ohio State and Georgia. Also included in his Top 25 is a Big Ten team that was below .500 last season but he sees making a big leap this upcoming year. He also places several of the top teams in the Big 12 in his rankings including one team inside his Top 10. Klatt also answers the questions of where to rank defending champion Michigan after losing so much talent to the Draft and how to evaluate Alabama in the post-Saban era.

I'm pretty much an OU football fan (send condolences) and I recently stumbled across the Big XII Championship where he QB's Colorado against Zero U. It was a phenominal beatdown. I actually like the guy and almost felt sorry for him. He is a mouth.
Kyle Whittingham consistently produces one of the hardest and toughest football teams. Unfortunately, many kids don't like to get popped in the face.
Football is supposed to be hard. The issue is that it has produced more soft finesse, elusive, skirt the edges type of programs. Programs don't want to play teams like Utah. Go ahead and ask anyone who is not a fan but a decision maker of a program. They know they have a good chance getting beat. Win loss record is extremely important. Also there is a good chance having several players get injured during the game.
I know fans will be fans, we all have our opinions, and that is a beautiful thing. At the end of the day, we have no input in how a program performs. It is the men on the field. We're just along for the ride.
One last thought. You can't spell Caleb Williams without 3 L's.
Utah 2-3 years ago, I'd say definitely. However, with all those injuries last year I'm not sure. Players don't really return "100%" like they say they are; something's always off. Of course, it's been a while so I don't remember how serious all their injuries were, but that is a major factor to me.

Well, you should know the college game atmosphere in person is worlds different from the pro atmosphere. In many cases, depending on the college team, it's far and away better than the pro.
@fr0stb1ght34 yeah live in England and English you would be amazed how many people actually watch the nfl here, I know of 8 people and we are always messaging every Sunday when games are on, 4 or 5 of us go to the London games every year! I only got into watching the nfl getting up doing night feeds with my first kid 11 years ago now and since then I've been hooked, I watch every Monday night and Thursday night games get hardly any sleep before work then on a Sunday have 2 screens one with a live game and redzone on the other screen sit watching for a good 10 hours! I love it.
So glad the Lions got that guy outta Utah, those guys know how to play hard

Top 25 breakdown was awesome. When we get closer to the season, I’d love to see a breakdown of who will likely make it into the playoffs and who has a decent chance of making it into the playoffs. These are my Top 12 teams most likely to get into the playoffs, but almost certainly not all of them will. There may be 3 or 4 different teams that get in. Here are 7 teams with a good chance of getting into the playoffs, and that will change as we go through the season. The 12 team playoff is gonna expand the excitement of college football.

Theres not a recruiting gap between Utah and any big 12 team unlike USC and Oregon had prior and Utah dominated USC and competed with Oregon consistently. that means Utah should be even better in this conference and they were already a 10 win+ team most years prior, I love the Oregon picks and bama picks too, bama will still be elite.
Utah will struggle. Just ask Texas. Until last year Texas was mediocre. Just check big 12 champion stats. Ou was elite, kstate was better than Texas

Utah will be good but dominant is loopy. The Big12 is filled with teams a lot like Utah; that aren’t fancy or get great recruits but put together solid developed teams.

Kentucky is the most slept on team in the country. Really solid last year and made moves in the portal. They would handle teams 18-25 on this list

We’re not a top 25 team, as much as that hurts. I love Coach Beamer and will never change that posture, but the truth is he’s got some serious pressure this year, to win big.
Our baseball program is quickly getting back to being a premiere team.
Men’s basketball had a great season despite some very bleak preseason predictions.
Our vaunted women’s basketball team is now a legacy brand, with 3 titles in 7 years.
At this point Beamer must win. Can’t use injuries and talent quality anymore because our recruiting is pretty decent, and it’s not talent that’s the issue; it’s our inability to develop that talent and create a sustainable process.
I hold hope but if we experience another 5-7 season, or even a 6-6 year then truthfully we’re going in circles and it’s not getting easier in the SEC.

Michigan and OSU are the most intriguing teams.
Michigan had a crazy amount of upheaval in the offseason and has one of the hardest schedules, but has the mentality to get stuff done.
OSU is stacked with talent, however they have a lot of big personalities and have a big question at QB. Also their coach is definitely on the hot seat. They have an easy schedule, however, they’ve been known to trip up before. Also Michigan has their number right now.
Both of these teams will be in the playoffs, mark my words.
Michigan's defense and physicality will keep them in every game. Also don't think QB will take a huge nosedive like everybody thinks. Should be another good season, go blue

Where would you rank Ohio State if they had the same schedule as OU? Ranking a team based on schedule strength isn’t a good metric on how good a team is going to be.
A team that is 8-4 won't make the playoffs, going 11-1 will. The ONLY thing that matters now is being in the top 12.

I understand why Joel has Ohio State ranked #1 but I’d take Kirby Smart and Carson Beck over Ryan Day and Will Howard every day of the week, that gap offsets whatever minor degree of gap there is between rosters.

Looking at both the WR's & RB's I see far more than a minor degree of gap.
@@blindspott1060 Have you looked at the offensive line, tight ends, and defensive lines as well? RBs and WRs do not a roster make. Georgia and Ohio State will have basically the exact same amount of blue chips and talent composite rating.

Funny what difference a year makes. Last year their was incessant whining about UGA's weak schedule. This year 3 road games against top 10 opponents, one home game and one neutral site against top 20. Ouch.

I’m worried about how the hype will affect the buckeyes I think they have a propensity in the past to sleep walk easier games and I think that could be detrimental to their season
11:45 Regarding Oklahoma, why are they ranked 17th due to their schedule when none of those games have been played yet? Shouldn't preseason rankings only be based off the team themselves and not who they will face? Unless you're trying to predict what the end Top 25 will look like, I don't see the reasoning for including potential matchups in ranking analysis
Missouri is right where they should be. Georgia to me should be #1. If Ohio St brings back any resemblance of the same offensive line from the Cotton Bowl, it’s gonna be interesting
Michigan lost their 7 best O-linemen. Many schools lose O-linemen ever year. Look at the draft. Ohio State brings everyone back with another year of experience and development. AND they added one through the portal

Washington is about to be down for a few years playing in the B10. They're going to struggle to get pass Ohio State, Michigan, USC, Oregon, Penn State, Wisconsin and if Matt Ruele gets Nebraska on solid footing them too. I feel bad for them and UCLA.
Are you guys doing anything for people that successfully predict the 12 team CFB playoff? Meaning, prognosticating the 12 teams that make the playoff.
Prior to the regular season seems like a reasonable deadline to me, and something along the lines of free tickets to the National Championship game and/or a moderate cash prize.

SEC: 9 teams
Big ten: 7 teams
Big 12: 5 teams
Acc: 3 teams
Independent: 1 team

I agree on Oregon, but I think that Washington will be in the top twelve by the end of the year. Decent recruiting, great new coaches and a truly fine transfer group. I feel that though DeBoer is a terrific coach, that Alabama will fall down this year and regain its stature in a couple of years.)

Huge USC fan here but 15 is way too high. The schedule is brutal and penalties, special teams and LOS are a mess.
