  • Sam Hartman was seemingly in college football for a decade, but after putting up historic numbers at Wake Forest and one year at Notre Dame, he went undrafted in 2024. Why did this happen? Today, we are going to talk about the rise of Sam Hartman, his journey and why he didn't hear his name called, enjoy!

he’s a Jon Bois character. all 3 of his losses at Notre Dame weren’t really entirely his fault if you look at everything. not even mentioning how he damn near tore his ACL the week before the Ohio State game. i could go on and on about Gerard Parker and bad spots in the OSU game and Gerard Parker again but if you asked Sam, he’d say “that was on me, i didn’t ________” which makes me respect the hell out of him. he is (slimly) my favorite collegiate athlete of all time purely because i love and also hate what if’s. Sam Hartman was a few “what if”s away from being the starting quarterback on a team in the College Football playoff.

I respectfully disagree with all these opinions that suggest Hartman "should have stayed at Wake Forest" and/or he "would have had a better season." The fact of the matter is that he had run his course at Wake Forest. He spent 5 years there already and had GRADUATED. He was ready for a NEW CHALLENGE (and who knows -- perhaps he realized that it would be unfair to remain at Wake Forest and thereby DENY HIS fellow Wake QB TEAMMATES the opportunity to start/play if he hogged 6 years of eligibility there ... whereas at ND there was the added benefit of no QB of his caliber ready to lead the Fighting Irish to the next level ... so it was a good match). Additionally, ND saves the ACC at least 5 slots on its schedule, so Hartman actually had the best of both worlds in having new challenges and experiences (e.g., playing in Ireland vs. Navy, playing Ohio State, playing USC and at Stanford, etc. while also facing familiar ACC teams such as Duke, Louisville, Clemson, and his old team Wake). I'm sure Sam Hartman saw the move as an opportunity to SHOWCASE himself nationally as well (all ND home games are on NBC, plus multiple away games are on national TV too. Finally, being the starting QB at ND provided Hartman MASSIVELY MORE NIL $$$ and endorsement $$$ than he would have been able to earn by remaining at WF for season #6. I also believe he monumentally enjoyed his year at ND, the coaching staff, and his new teammates.
To the extent that Sam Hartman went undrafted, I believ he "hurt himself" by opting out of ND's bowl game. Had he played -- a game the Irish won handily with a back-up QB, he likely would have put up "pinball game numbers" to impress the scouts. But more to the point, he would have remained practicing with the team and he would have stayed "in football shape" through December and early January heading into the Senior Bowl. Instead, by opting out of ND's bowl game (which was really silly to do IF he was committed to playng in the Senior Bowl), his last real football practice and game prior to later in January was in November @ Thanksgiving. Consequently, despite continuing to "work out privately" (which is NOT the same), I think Sam Hartman was very "rusty" in the Senior Bowl and did NOT show well. I believe that hurt his draft stock considerably -- MUCH MORE than having only average performances against Ohio State and Clemson ... because he did NOT hab a "bad" season at ND at all.

From watching ND extensively, I can tell you that he couldn't adapt to the team. Felt like he threw more INTs than TDs, even though that's not the case. Great thrower when his targets neared the sideline, but asking him to throw it in the middle of the field was sketchy. He had tools around him, but they weren't exactly wide receivers. Tight ends, running backs, and as per usual, a stellar O-line. I think he's a good dude, but he's just eh at QB. A great arm with awful decision making often times.

He was good not great, but he also didn’t get helped by the offensive game plans at ND. He was brought in to be a difference maker, but when the big lights shone, the coaching staff turtled and put out very conservative game plans. They played to limit mistakes on offense and give the defense the chance to win those games. That limited Sam’a options in the passing offense. Not saying that that is why he was underwhelming, but it didn’t help. ND didn’t need to bring Sam in if they didn’t want to use him…they could have done that with Buckner and gotten a similar result.
But, ultimately, he had enough chances to be the playmaker and pull out those wins, so it is largely still on him. He just wasn’t great.

He was in a stacked draft class up against Jayden, bo nix, calib, JJ, spencer, jordan travis, drake maye, milton , penix ETC. thats a lot of QBs who were better. Thats WHY he went undrafted.

If chase Daniel’s from Misso can last 10+ yrs in the NFl with arguably a worse college career, I have no doubt Sam will be at best a carrer backup with some plug and play here and there. His medicals and poor performance against top tear teams broke his draft stock. He folds under pressure to much,

  •  Před 2 dny

Ill tell you exactly what happens he went to Notre Dame where top layers go and watch their careers burn.

  • @goat7844

  • @Lachronix

he'd be a carer backup anyway. Which is fine, but something you'd not expect from someone who played at ND. Maybe those losses showed something about his playing style. But I think he'll be fine and prob be called up in the nFL at some point.
Id imagine that the medical stuff is a huge (if not the only reason) part in why he's not drafted.
After watching the vid in full: maybe it was the playing lol.

  • @PortlandRaiderBowling

He was never going to be a high draft pick. Same as Riley Leonard. They get hyped up because they play at Notre dame. But if you watch the film they aren’t reading the defense. Hartman would read the DE at wake them either run it handoff or throw a go route.

  • @jasonvaught2274
    @jasonvaught2274 Před 7 dny

This is easy. There have been multiple examples of great college qbs that couldn't make the practice squad for NFL teams. NFL football is a different game. Ask the Raiders or the Titans how their star college picks Vince Young and Jamarcus Russell faired.

How is he old? Dude is literally 24. Guys play into their 40’s and get drafted at 22, he is only two years above the average age. He isn’t old, this draft kept ragging on 24 being old I would understand 27 as old.

In Hartman defense at notre dame, they had no wr help for him last year. His best pass catchers were the te that got hurt part way in the season and the rbs...nd always has issues getting good wrs for the qbs.
