- A troubled young orphan boy in Maine is taken in by a family and befriended by a lobsterman who shows him the ways of the world. Starring Dana Andrews, Jean Peters, Dean Stockwell, Cesar Romero, Ann Revere.
In our family we started out with (quite rapidly) 2 girls and 7 boys and being born during the depression and WW 2...very poor in a small northern midwest town...I recall my brothers (I was # 7 in the chain) and with slingshots and made up traps and snares, they (we) caught rabbits, squirrels and I was small, so picked blueberries, blackberries and raspberries and sold them...we all helped to stay alive. I recall my 14 year old brother had a chance to be taught to shoot, to hunt in deer season and he got one. Imagine that excitement with venison and things from our big garden. We did not have money as many did then. Sorry to ramble on; it is things in this movie that got me thinking...all these years, my wonderful memories are great help, for I have lost so many of the 9...never enough time to be with one another as we grew up, got older, some got separated, etc. I am very happy we never had TV and a lot of things like that because some of us read all the time, we neighbored in those days, all talked a lot to one another and, well, I'd best shut up. Movies were big in our lived, 25 cents and we saw all the great ones, like this one. Dana Andrews was always one of my favorite actors too. My dear old mother had a crush on him all her life and she loved good movies.

wally • Me too! I could watch Dana Andrews all day long. Such a shame he never achieved the fame he deserved due to his drinking.
Oh, and even though I wasn't alive during the depression, I had some hard times raising 6 kids alone in the 1980's. One summer the kids picked wild blackberries and sold them for $.50/pint. They made enough to buy school shoes for the 3 that were in school. They were so proud of those shoes.
I made everything they ate homemade, and a lot of what they wore. I think it gave them all good values, and we all have lots of great memories.
They all have a strong work ethic. Three went to college, the other three just worked, but all have done pretty well.

This is one of my favorite films. a real fine honest movie. I enjoy watching this every few months like an old book. It never fails to make me feel great,loosing myself in the wonderful story. Not too many movies portray, as far as i am concerned a real slice of life with all it's sweet moments and terrible turns as well as this one. It stops being a movie and i am a part of this wonderful world. Thank you ever so much for posting it! a real treasure you will help others discover like i did. Joe
joe 01225 thanks Joe. My grandfather's boat is the one Hod uses in the film. My family has many stories about this movie being filmed on Vinalhaven.

I remember Dean Stockwell already as an adult, in the very dramatic movie with Bradford Dillman, Compulsion. His facial expressions do show some kind of darkness in his life, even in this old movie when he was still a child.
A perfect film with superb performances all round, especially from the then 11 years old Dean Stockwell, an amazing child actor who never gave a bad performance and was very adept at playing troubled orphan boys who were desperately seeking somewhere to belong and someone to love them and belong to. Filmed in the summer of 1947, released in the US in July, 1948 and in the UK in May, 1949.
+darrenburnfan I Love finding films from Dean's child-star days (or, for that matter, ANY decade in his unforgettable career). Even though it wasn't a happy time for him, he certainly never let it show on camera. :)
+Lesley Wentzell Has there been a biography about Dean Stockwell? I haven't heard much about his life as a child actor and he's never interviewed about what it was like for him back then. He's a great actor and I've got several of his lesser known movies like this one.
+gossamerwings As for books published about this amazing actor, the only one I'm aware of is an unauthorized biography, written by M.L. Zambrana, aptly titled "Nature Boy." I own it. Because it's "Unauthorized," however, I don't necessarily take it as gospel. The author got some things wrong. I hope that helped. I'm always happy to meet another Dean fan. ☺️
+Lesley Wentzell Thanks for the info, i'll look into it and see if I can find that book and possibly another biography, it'd be nice if he wrote his autobiography. Actually, i wonder how many child actors wrote their autobiographies. Many have been written about. Don't know if you liked Peggy Ann Garner as a child actress, I read a bio about her life and she had an awful mother, hence a sad life which ended with her passing away of cancer in her early fifties. She was in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and received a special Oscar for her performance in that movie.
gossamerwings There's another book called "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" which spotlights the Legendary Dean Stockwell, but I don't think he's the main focus. I've always held a special place in my heart for him, as well as for Judy Garland (though technically she began her career as a teenager). I seem to be drawn to entertainers who didn't always have it easy, but never failed to shine in this unforgiving Hollywood business. I don't know much about Peggy Ann Garner, but I'll definitely check out her work. :)

@@billhuber2964 I learned to shoot a .22 rifle when I was 7. Pistols are more difficult, so I suppose 9 is about right. 😀

You're welcome! The boat used is my grandfather's boat, the Hazel R, and yes, my user name is a nod to my grandmother, Hazel Rogers Dyer. My uncle, his dog, and my grandfather all appear in the movie, which makes it all the more dear. Trivia - the storm scene is used in the opening of Gilligan's Island (the weather started getting rough ...)

He plays Hod Stillwell. Strange name, Hod. Maybe it's short for something.
Hod is an old Hebrew name, biblical, I think. It was popular in Maine years ago.
