  • How can we find courage to act when we can’t see? Ariel shares a story she has kept secret from many: her story of receiving a terminal diagnosis and recovering from traumatic brain injury. As a medical student at Michigan State and Ph.D. student in Science & Religion at Oxford, she draws on both medicine and spirituality to reflect on living with uncertainty. She embodies her message in a beautiful and inspiring performance danced in aerial silks.
Ariel Dempsey is a fourth-year medical student about to graduate from Michigan State College of Human Medicine with her MD and complete her PhD in Science and Religion at the University of Oxford. She aspires to become a palliative care physician working at the interface of medicine and theology. On the side of her studies, Ariel loves aerial dance and circus arts. She is part of a troupe in Grand Rapids called Bangarang Circus and has traveled the coast of California street-performing to raise money for the charity WorldVision and its Fundraise for Health Cause.

Thank you, thank you, Ariel, for sharing your powerful story and journey back from the brink. I'm in my 60s, my body is starting to break down and I'm beginning to fear what all older people must feel, that time is no longer stretched out beyond the horizon. Your inspiring talk jarred me into thinking in a different way, to focus on what's before me and not let my fears of a somewhat uncertain future take root. I can do something about my body. I'm going to start yoga! I'm glad you're okay, and wow, you're amaaaazing on the silks! --Karl

The last time I saw Ariel was at Elbell Field 6 years ago her and a friend had run a half marathon earlier in the day and they came to play pick up soccer with us till it got dark. In the 25 years I've been playing pick up in Ann Arbor I'm certain that nobody has ever backed up a half marathon with 2 hours of pick up in the same day. She's left-footed like I am so we always found each other to pass to when our heads were up-some natural, innate familiarity among birds of the same feather. Before her and her friend left she gave me a short perfectly-weighted pass that I hit first time 30 yards from goal-two orange cones spread 3 feet apart as is custom at Elbell-and scored from a thread-the-needle angle. When she saw it went in she grinned discerningly knowing she gifted me that jewel of a goal. When she showed up to play everybody perked up-our queen was visiting us but she was the coolest queen you'll ever meet in your life...

I’ve only seen a handful of these talks but this might be the sexist start. If her message doesn’t get them..the dance certainly will.
