I’ve been enjoying being in Washington State. But now that winter is here and the weather is changing, it’s a little difficult being here. So at about noon today, I made a snap decision to leave. Still undecided as to where to relocate. But for now, I’m heading South.
This day started out in Capitol State Forest near Olympia Washington. And it ended in Astoria Oregon.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

My theme song
@@StaticCamperVan Mine too
I love that whole movie! Wanderin’ Star is my “theme song”!
In south Texas gas ⛽️ is $2.79 to $2.89 and all in between
I met a guy once who traveled according to his butter. If it was too firm he went to a warmer place. It it was too soft he headed for a cooler area. Your olive oil made me think of him. LOL
Not a bad system!
I’m going to borrow that thought. Thanks.
When they were small, my 3 sons would ask, "Mommy, where are we going?" I'd say, "I dunno, but, we'll know when we get there." "But, Mommy, what if we get lost?" "Oh, we can't get lost because we're all together."
I think that not crossing a bridge because you don't like it is perhaps THE BEST reason not to cross a bridge! Good for you! And me, I left the Olympic penninsula Novemeber 5th and made my way down to Berkeley, CA where I'll be until next month when I head to Quartzsite Arizona! Safe travels Scott!
Aww, you missed the snow!
@@StaticCamperVan sadly, yes I missed the snow, though not all together. It was raining as I left Ashland, and heading up Syskio pass it turned to snow, then to white out blizzard conditions and I had to drive through a couple inches of fresh snow as more was coming down while dodging going around the people and trucks stoping or spinning out. That was fun! Thankfully I grew up in New England where we don't even really call it snow unless it's more than 18" worth. Lol.
Good to hear the rain and snow didn’t hinder your commute south.
I'm glad you are leaving Washington!!!
Yes most definitely a scary bridge!😅
I'm not too favorable of steep bridges myself so I totally understand 😊
It's so good to spend time with you and listen to you. There are so many of us who are similar to you in the dislike of things in life. Thank you for putting some humor in there. That is one lesson in life I need to remember to add to mine. Till next time, take care and be safe ❤️
Thanks Leona
Astoria is my favorite town in OR.
I would actually move there full time as I love it's simplicity and small town energy. Enjoy your travels to warmer climate. I'm lucky to have family in warm climates like AZ, CA and HI if it gets too miserable in the winter.
Hawaii would be downright awful this time of year 🙃
@@StaticCamperVan I’ve never been to HI ! I prefer non-tropical areas !
Took my wife over the Astoria bridge during the hurricane bomb a year ago in our 159" hightop Promaster, 60 mph or so cross winds. Got to the Washington side and the hill had slid down over the road so we turned around and drove back over it again. Double the fun! 🤣🤣🤣
Bwhahaha!! I would be a bit cross!
I'm so happy to hear that you have good friends in Washington. 1 or 2 good friends really makes a difference in life.
I don't like the cold either. Brrrrrr! Just makes me want hot coffee and a warm blanket all day. Safe travels to you! 😊
I’ve got lots of coffee, blankets and even broke out the hot water bottle last night!
Just found your channel. It’s wonderful. I have bridge anxiety so I totally understand. Driving over that bridge on a stormy night seems to me inconceivable. Anyway take care
Hey Thomas, Thanks.
Yes, that bridge isn't fun in any weather but stormy weather is a bit scary
Soon I shall be on a trip from northern Wisconsin to Arizona to visit my daughters and get way a bit from the frigid weather so I agree it's a good idea to head into warmer temps. And where I can find Trader Joe's as well! Safe travels. Take care!
Astoria is a cool town and starting there and driving south through the coastal towns is real relaxing. Cannon Beach, Gold Beach, Coos Bay, Tillamook etc are cool. Love that drive and stopping for clam chowder and hiking.
And stopping for cheese, right?

I dislike going over most bridges and can relate to that ! Looking forward to next video 🤓
I’ve never seen frozen olive oil before! Hearing you talk about that bridge makes me think of how scared I was to go over the Mackinaw Bridge in Michigan the first time. Now I’ve been over it so many times that it doesn’t phase me, but I almost had a panic attack the first couple of times! And I’m with you on the extreme temperatures…unfortunately, I live in Wisconsin, so half of the year falls into that category. Someday I will live in a more temperate climate!!!
Same with me. We crossed the Megler bridge a week and a half ago when the crazy high winds were kicking up whitecaps. Couple that with the marine layer cutting down visibility.
Needless to say, I was white knuckling it 😱
Here it WA most my life! Love it here!
Hi Scott praying that you are doing well 👍🏾
Doing well, Thanks
I am glad to hear that
I get the bridge thing. There's an interchange in L.A. where I-5 meets CA-14, and I've seen it collapse in quakes twice (1971 and 1994). Every time I have to drive over it I get anxious.
Oh my goodness! That would make me give up bridges altogether!
Slow yourself those things which give you comfort. When your kind to yourself it improves your outlook, mood and tolerance level. Pleasure and happiness release endorphins that make you feel better naturally like the walks you take. You need some sunshine for your solar power and your bodies demand for vitamin d. You have a growing fan base and network. Your doing a lot of things well as a content producer and story teller. Keep living your best life.
Stay dry and warm and here's to you finding someplace calm and relaxing to stay. As always, love your videos.
Thank you.
Enjoy traveling with you
Yes, some bridges have their own set of circumstances...
...they and us don't exactly fit.
Its one thing to share in mutual laughter and quite another to make fun and laught at another...
What a wonderful surprise... I recently subscribed to your channel and of course trying to catch up with past videos. I used to live in Astoria 2011, 12, 13. Also did the 10k acrossthe Astoria/ Megler bridge. From the Wa side into Astoria. Its 205 feet from low tide to the bridge base. If you go back drive by 309 Franklin Avenue my old house. Built in 1886. Oh I miss it. 😢. Thanks.
Very cool 👍🏼
What a great (albeit long) for the title of Scott’s book. Oh see now I’ve done it Scott you have to write a book.
Oh, I would need a ghost writer. I’m barely literate.
@@StaticCamperVan A ghost writer, so is this going to be something that you’ll release this coming Halloween lol. I have every bit of confidence in you. You could do it if you I / we believe in you. I just thought it was silly, but maybe something to put on the back burner for future a project.
That bridge would scare the hell out of me!
I’m with you when it comes to that bridge Scott. I live about an hour from there so I have crossed it many times but ALWAYS get stomach butterflies🥴♥️
I always feel silly about driving around the bridge, especially because I still have to drive on the Longview Bridge. Haha
@@StaticCamperVan Longview is where I live!😊Yes that bridge is high but thankfully short😜👏🏼Safe travels
Happy travels!
Oh... you missed our beautiful snow. The overcast and gray skies have been mild so far this year. But yeah we are getting more snow in the forecast over the next 2 weeks. Those of us in know have upped our Vitamin D to more than 10k IU per day. Usually it's just wet, not this bone chilling cold. You know it cold when the cold weather shelters are already open to ensure the homeless stay warm and safe.
On the contrary, driving through snow was a big factor in leaving. I didn’t record any video of driving in snow because I kept both hands on the wheel!
When I was a kid, long before that bridge was built, we had to take a ferry across the Columbia River to get to Astoria and Seaside.
What a smashing video!
I was never so scared driving as I was driving over that bridge. It is just downright scarry!
The great thing about having a camper is that wherever you end up, that's home.
I love watching to your videos and learning about your journey. Thanks for sharing!
I am also so glad you have good friends in Washington. Your travels take you to so many beautiful areas in the U.S. l pray for safe travel in whatever weather you may encounter. I don't have an aversion to bridges in general, but the one you were describing would give me nightmares too. I want to thank you for being so polite about replying to some of our comments. It makes you more of a friend to all of us instead of an unknown CZcams person. God Bless!
The only place he's visited is on the West coast
That’s a fine bridge, a downright beautiful bridge. Be safe out there
Yikes to the frozen olive oil.
Excellent video as always thank you so much for sharing
Thanks Ken
Hi , good morning, ☕️🍯🍶 head's up ! Florida is nice , warm & pretty too , see 🏝
The longest continuous truss bridge in America. I think? Lived there in 1981. Also, the older city on the west coast- the original San Francisco- hilly and victorian
DUDE! TOTALLY UNDERSTAND THE ASTORIA BRIDGE! LOL I drove it with my classic RV and my Mom lol! Good luck on your adventures, I'm headed on the road asap in my trk n canopy SOON! CYA DOWN THE ROAD!
Be careful buddy! I saw all those lasers on you when you were talking trash about the Astoria bridge! Duck and cover, weave my friend! Weave!!
Love Astoria and that area.
The Astoria bridge across the Columbia river is terrifying, especially in inclement weather. 🌧 🌦
Another relaxing video on this fine snowy Sunday afternoon east of the Cascades. I always enjoy your content! Having traveled thru so many of the same places as you across the years I always find your vlogs so enjoyable and entertaining. Can't wait to see where you're headed next...!
Thanks Robert. Hope you’re staying warm
Yeah, that bridge is a white knuckler! Safe travels ✌🏼
I've changed up my routine and save your videos to watch 1st thing in the a.m. watching your videos 1st thing in the morning right next to the wood stove gets my day started on the right track.
Good mornin,g well content-🤘
Totally get your feeling. I used to take a ridiculously roundabout way home just to avoid the I5 when it was raining in California. Was a total sh*tshow at rush hour :)
Don't go burning your bridges 😆😉💜
I hear you. I don't like any temps close to freezing. Oregon in the spring, summer and fall. Arizona in the winter. That's my life these days.
Me no like steep mountains or high bridges either. Beautiful views though whiles not purpiseli looking down🫨
Cool story about the bridge!
You really should take a drive over the Astoria Bridge yourself!
As a Seattleite for 3o years yea Washington is no joke . Winters suck as well as spring. U r so lucky to b able to leave. Safe travels hope u get to a better climate soon
Great video
Thanks Alvin
As soon as I saw that bridge I said to self “ohh I love that bridge!” I cross it whenever I can, it’s my favorite route between WA & OR. It was nice knowing you were here in WA for a bit but I get wanting somewhere warmer. Safe travels.
As you know, I’ve had forty years of warm weather. A little cool is ok.
These colossal bridges put me in full panic mode & I will drive 1/2 a day to avoid them if possible. Scott, I seize up & fear I will go insane & deliberately drive off the bridge & plunge to my death. Turns out this is a thing!! Some people feel compelled to throw themselves into subway pits and off the Empire State Bldg, etc, and don’t know why. It’s one of the strangest phenomena of the human animal. 😳😱
The Astoria bridge gives me nightmares too! Glad to hear I'm not the only one!
Seems to be a lot of us
My dad was terrified to cross the Vincent Thomas bridge in San Pedro. His palms would start sweating and he’d just be freaked out. He’d cross over that thing as fast as traffic would let him.
That reminds of the bridge going from Kansas to Kansas city, MO. It's straight up and straight down very nerve wracking. Have a good evening.
Note to self: don’t drive through Kansas City
I am 1/2 mile from Driftwood Beach on the Oregon coast if you want to do laundry or park here for a rest stop or stay a few days and get to know the area
Hey Thanks, that’s very nice of you to offer
Morning Scott, am currently in Santa Cruz /Monterey, CA area and its rainy and gloomy right now. Seattle weather. Been here a couple of months and its time to head south to get some sun. Winter can get rough hanging around on the Oregon coast, spring and fall is the best. Summer can be crazy crowed with tourist. Generally if u want to get some sun this winter on the coast ur gonna have to go south past Morro Bay and Pismo, CA. Not a fan of the desert and boondocking, spend my time in the city and stealth camp. Will be looking forward to ur further adventures this winter. See ya down the road. 😎
Love Washington. Should have moved back there when I had a chance.
Hey man, so sorry I have not been around for awhile. I have had some serious personal issues to deal with. Just want you to know that i am still a Fan and enjoy your videos. 🙂😉😃
Hope you’re doing better!
@@StaticCamperVan ......things are improving thank God. It's been a tough road so far.....which, we all have these times in life unfortunately. Oh wow I should have never seen this video, you made me hungry with That delicious food and the salsa looks delicious too, next time you come to Vancouver bring me two of the salsa, and you don't know where your going, until you get there,
Static I feel the same way about the 580 bridge from San Rafael to Richmond. Thank you for the scenic footage and the breakfast burrito. I guess it's time to supplement the Yellow Bird with Guajillo. Stay dry!
Oh, I don't like the 580 bridge either. Haha
I just love how you have so much in such a small space, proves we don't need a lot of possessions.
Seems the less I own the more content I am
@@StaticCamperVan Same here, I've been in my minivan for 18 months now, I have storage because I'm a working carpenter, over the Christmas break I'm going to throw more stuff away
I was born in Astoria 😇 and it's just a small jaunt from me, was just in Warrenton this afternoon 😇
Oh My, agree with you on that bridge. I was going to pick up my daughter from her bf grandparents Beach house. And when I seen that bridge I almost hesitated going to get her. Lol. Those waves was blowing. In a panic I did 60mph across it. I didn't take that bridge back home. Took the long way through Longview.
Next time go in the daytime, crossing the Astoria bridge may not be so daunting.???!!!
Do they turn the wind off and lower the bridge during the day?
Awesome!👍🇨🇦☕

Few yrs ago was in Seaview Wa and needed to go to urgent care in Astoria to rule out the flu. At top of bridge I saw an old hearse with a giant hotdog in a giant bun on top. Got back to vacation rental from trip to urgent care and the hearse with giant hotdog in a bun on top was parked across street at a cute lodge in Seaview called the Nor’Easter….had old vintage trailers to stay in a as well as lodge rooms. Name of cute accomodation is called the Sou’wester! It is so cute just steps from the mighty pacific !
Have a safe journey love your channel was hoping I might run into you at the west olympia grocery outlet where I work about a mile or so from trader Joe's
Shopped there several times recently. It’s a nice store.
I enjoyed my brief foray into van life whilst I was between lodgings but I was not looking forward to winter in Seattle in a van. Hence, glad I found a nice place to live before it got too cold. My electric bill was almost $200 though for this past month when I started using the heaters for real! Zoinks Added some plastic over some windows, but looks like I need more and to close off the fireplace, too, perhaps. Guess you're never really "done" anywhere you live. There's always something.
Oh wow! That’s a lot but I understand staying warm.
I think a cold damp rain makes it even colder and our bones a little stiffer.
I agree
Thank you, Scott for this and every video. Enjoyed it very much, as usual. Just a couple of things:
(1) It's funny, you leave Seattle in winter because of the weather; while we are thinking of going to Seattle during the winter precisely for the mild weather (we live in northeast Ohio). Like many things, "cold" is a subjective thing.
(2) My wife and I would like to thank you for turning us onto Yellowbird. We've tried them all. My favorite is the Jalapeño. My wife's prefers the Blue Agave Sriracha. We use the Serrano on southeast-Asian style dishes. We'll now have to go to Trader Joe's to try the salsa you've mentioned!
Anyway, just wanted to say "thank you" and wish you well on your journey.
hope you are having a nice drive I live in wa it is getting kind of soggy and cold
It’s a gee-whiz bridge over the mouth of a gee-whiz river with a gee-whiz view. If only one could enjoy the view! 😮
I don't blame you for not wanting to cross that bridge. Yikes!
The bridge crossing at Longview, that one kind of gives me the Willies. Astoria bridge is something too, especially during the frequent high winds.
Stayed at Safeway several times. Buy food and make dindin. You also get to hear the soft relaxing sound of the sealions bellowing in yonder marina all night. Have a great drive down 101. Will you be making Quartzite at all
Funny, I actually enjoy driving over the Longview Bridge. Although both bridges are usually really windy, which isn’t so fun.
Never say never but I can’t think of a single reason to visit Quarantine again.
@Static CamperVan Quarantine, That's funny. I have a truck camper event and maybe a Ham radio event to attend. After that, aimless wandering and sight seeing for a couple months before returning to Seatroit.
Hi Scott,
I, for one, will not be making fun of you. I am terrified of heights and heights combined with nearby water and I am completely freaked out, lol. I would probably take a long detour just to avoid it.
Drive safely.
Martin.
Looks like you found a good place to overnight! I parked near the marina and there were tweakers all night roaming around like zombies.
The family of deer were very quiet. No troubles at all.
Of course I’m the same I don’t Wk well in extreme cold as you get older you can’t I’m that way now.
Love WA and OR, lived in both, until the gray wet chills these older bones. 46 years ago I didn't drive over that bridge because of the $1 toll. Even feeling the chill in AZ.
Didn’t know it used to have a toll. That would be another reason to avoid it.
Seattle is brutal in the winter, i hibernate until spring and am planning to start snowbirding next year.:)
Could be worse. You could be in Leavanworth!
you need to look up cheapest gas near me. and free camping. or cheapest camping.
Oh yes. If you click on my channel page and look back through my videos, I did a lot of that last year

You said Olympia is the capital of the state of seattle. That was after the first mistake you said you were going to fix your mistake . lol. That was so funny.

My battery is doing ok.
15:10 lololol So funny!
I will agree with you on not dealing well with colder temperatures I live in Ohio and we all know what the weather is like in Ohio currently we've been getting down into the 20 and 30s at night and maybe getting up into the 50s during the day but I'm still cold and I don't handle being chilly very well so I'm I think better suited for the Southwest or maybe Florida where it stays warmer in the winter
I’m currently sitting in Florida. It’s the winter time and I don’t like it so I’m sure I would hate it in the summer. Humidity is horrible, too. I would take Washington over Florida though.
