    DoW was what got me into 40k in the first place. Being a 6 year old kid and seeing that intro video of the Blood Ravens holding the line against the Orks on that hill, the dreadnaught, the officer putting up the flag… it was all just so absolutely brutal and magnificent, and as a 6 year old kid who had only seen the light heartedness of things like Star Wars and Star Trek, it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Love this one!

    I think that Blood Ravens originated from Fifth Fellowship of the Thousand Sons led by Sul Kontep. The reason why Rubric didn't affect them, from what i understand was that they fought alongside sisters of silence in the Siege of Cthonia. Their remnants were absorbed by Imperial Fists who had an honour debt to them, after they were saved from annihilation by the Sons. (this would also explain why they had so many Imperial Fists Artifacts in their armory)

    • @omgtwlol
      @omgtwlol Před rokem +8

      @@MaticustheRed as i said the sisters of silence when the rubric was cast. There are few theories. One that i like was that the reason was rubric's failure was the fact it was cast in the warp, in the presence of too many chaotic energies. In this theory it worked perfectly in the real space, and had side effects in the warp. Next one is my own theory. Every legion (by design) had some kind of affinity. Even prior to meeting their primarch, they were were alike their sires. I think, that Thousand Sons genome was perfectly fine, and the whole flesh change was just tzeenchian plot to turn them towards damnation and weed out the weak (non psychic and weak psykers), and once they turned, there was no more reason for keeping the facade. So why did it continue to happen on the planet of sorcerers? I think the spell used was very powerful, so it will take affect in real space. Same as with rubric, the presence of chaos energies just magnified whatever was done to them. It's not like tzeench cares about the well being of his slaves. Third possibility (canon) the whole reason for being sent to Cthonia was penance. They met Malcador on Terra, and returned to their pre Magnus heraldry and colours. There were about 6000 of them at this point. The theory goes, that the legion Magnus was promised by the Emperor were not the Grey Knights, but these improved and refined (purified?) Thousand Sons from the Fifth Fellowship.
      We will never know the exact reason, but the whole thing and Cthonia campaign is canon. I recommend reading a wiki page about it. It's fun.

    I have had a headcanon idea that the Blood Ravens have a name for themselves, "The Unwanted".
    The Unforgiven being Lion's still loyal sons, whether they followed Luther erroneously or not.
    They see Guilliman as too quick to air plans based on revealed secrets.
    If the Lion asked all but the innermost sanctum would be open to him or his chapter masters. When asked their bloodline they would mention being the last astartes made from Terra, as they were finished just AFTER the Siege on Terra started. The Grey Knights were finished just BEFORE the Siege began.
    The Unwanted title, and the time of their chapters true founding being enough for the truth sensing Lion to know whom their gene father is, and their lack of loyalty to him.
    Their loyalty is to the Tree, not the branches. The Emperor, not his sons.

      A little twist to this...
      The Emporer told Magnus he had another legion for him...what if that other legion was released as the Blood Ravens. That would explain the higher librarian count (Thousand Sons geneseed) and the lack of the Flesh Change (fixed by the Emporer)

    • @djchappell1726
      @djchappell1726 Před 10 měsíci

      @@toddolson4614 I like to thing psyker potential is based on three factors; your ability to read the waves of the warp, the ability to resist the waves in the warp, and the ability to MAKE waves in the warp.
      The Thousand Sons were all but maxed out on the reading and making, but were left vulnerable to others more capable then themselves.
      The Blood Ravens were retooled. They have, from what I can tell, a weaker offensive potency in exchange for more resistance. Big E seems to have also toned down the urge to constantly spend time pondering the warp. The Blood Ravens seem to be quite happy letting someone else do that dangerous task, stealing the resulting research after the fact.
      As for geneseed make up... I'm thinking the Emperor cut Magnus's geneseed with a small bit of his own. Magnus is a perfect psyker, just foolishly confident and supremely curious. Those character traits being his folly alone. *Cough* Emperor's too *Hacking cough*

      Best theory I've seen is that the Rubric worked, but only worked as intended on the Thousand Sons geneseed outside of the Warp. While the Rubric Marines got turned into souls bound to dust filled power armor, the Blood Ravens were cured.

      @ProfessorOfPoorTaste Před rokem +5

      @@Reyma777 "that would mean the Blood Ravens would have had to defect from Magnus the Red ?"
      No, it just means that their chapter was made from Thousand Sons geneseed.
      As stated in that theory, the Rubric of Ahriman was overcharged within the Warp because of the rampant chaotic energies which were already causing the Flesh Change mutations to go out of control, and so went too far in reversing the mutations. Meanwhile their geneseed outside of the Warp was simply fixed because it was not exposed to those rampant energies.

    Like many others, I was pulled into 40k by Dawn of War. In 2005 I started collecting with the first few minis. Now 18 years later I have a third of a chapter in models, now being repainted to the crimsin, white and black of the one chapter I grew up with.
    Lorewise I'd say the origins of the Chapter and their parent Primarch should never be outright stated (a mistake made with the Terminus decree) for a core part of their allure is the mystery. Rather I'd have a list of individuals who know that secret - Chapter Master Angelos, Venerable Brother Thule and Chief Librarian Jonah Orion being at the top of my list.
    As for why they might not be so open to the rest of the Imperium, remember that they have been placed at the edge of Excommunicatis Traitoris during the reign of the corrupt Chapter Master and Chief Librarian Azariah Kyras and the Aurelian Crusades.Kyras nearly orchestrated an entire system's Exterminatus in Khorne's name and was willing to damn the sectors inhabitants, as well as his brothers, forever. Combine this with how Inquisition tends to deal with factions that know a little more than the Inquisition would fancy, and it doesn't seem all that unreasonable that the BR would be hesitant to expose their full collections - assuming major pieces of it weren't lost during the Chapter civil war as seen in the Dawn of War 2 story (in its expansions, at least). Lamenters during the Badab war wewre more innocent, and even they got hit with a century-long penitent crusade, so a Chapter that only barely avoided turning to Chaos would be treated more harshly.
    Now, if Guilliman himself showed up and requested access I believe gabe would grant it - what exactly would happe, that remains unknown for now....

His obsession of putting multilasers(ig weapon) where they don't belong (as marine land raider and terminator armaments), his disregard for canon and lore in general among other things kinda confirmed that notion about him. My theory is that one of the hidden Primarchs was the true source of the Horus Heresy. Maybe even a Chaos god born in human form that corrupted Horus and the others. The other hidden Primarch was chosen by the Emperor to keep the true history of mankind safe not only from Chaos but also from those humans that would take advantage of the power vacuum. That's why the Blood Raves share traits from so many chapters. They took things from many different chapters to hide their origins.

Nor do I think they are the new legion (free of all the gene flaws) that the EoM promised Magnus should he rejoin the loyalists. No I suspect the Blood Ravens are technically Ultramarine, but that's because they are in fact surviving 2nd Legion gene-seed. The description of the 2nd Primarch sounds a lot like Gabriel Anglos, we know Gabriel and the Blood Ravens have strange connection to Alderi. Plus they are the only chapter that seems to have essentially battle pyskers as standard. To the point many non-pysker aspirants becomes pyskers after receiving their final implants (along with having no known gene-seed flaw). Not even the Thousand Son's displayed that trait, suggesting its belongs to one of the lost and forgotten. Since Battle Pyskers seems to be a role missing in make up of the old legions, even Thousand Son's seemed more academic (given that their Primarch was destined for the Golden Throne makes sense) than warriors. Since Blood Ravens tend use their 'liberated' knowledge to aid in battle than to just have and horde.

    I believe they know their primarch and it's Magnus, hence the secrecy. They fear that knowledge getting out. Lore wise it be the more compelling. That or their liniage us mixed with 2 primarchs. Samguinious & Corax; to make their name make sense.

Fear of losing something important, or losing a advantage, or something that would discriminate them or even condemn the chapter ur guees is as good as my. You mean Chimeric? If so then it could be a possibility, personally i see then either made from Janus purified Thousand Sons Geneseed, or from the remnants Sul Kontep’s loyalist Fifth Fellowship after they were adopted by the Imperial Fists (and in fact could probably have their Geneseed be spliced with the Imperial Fists’s in an attempt to stabilize it making them chimeric).

    If they are truly the Sons of Magnus then surely they would suffer the Flesh Change, suffer from the Rubicon or the Piro Domo.
    That’s a single point of failure in this argument. Are they possibly of 2nd or 11th Legion Geneseed?

    • @CountDVB

    • @marcialhd
      @marcialhd Před 4 měsíci +1

      Except that they DO suffer from something like the Fleshchange, as sometimes their Psychic neophytes (those trained to become Librarians) fail on their trials and that causes them to be affected by something like the Fleshchange that rapidly mutates them, these failed neophytes are then taken into a part of the Omnis Arcanum (the Flagship and Fortress Monastery of the Blood Ravens) called “The Tower” in order to be kept out of sight and studied as to find a way to prevent this from affecting other neophytes.

    Don't forget Lorgar also was starved for knowledge,in his particular case,the Primordial Truth. I see why people categorizes the Blood Ravens as Magnus gene sons, but there are also points for deeming them as Lorgars descendants: The recruiting planets Cyrene and Aurelia, named after the Blessed Lady Cyrene Valantion and Lorgar Aurelian,both Primarch and character from the Word Bearers.Their motto "Knowledge Is Power,use it well" was first uttered by none other than First Chaplain Erebus,again fom the Word Bearers. Another point for supporting Word Bearers lineage would be the lack of Flesh Change and the Rubric of Ahriman. Again, Davian Thule, captain of the fifth company of the Blood Ravens during The Dark Crusade Kronus Campaing(PC),encounters some damning evidence on some found ancient relics of the Ravens dating the Horus Heresy. Later during the campaign,upon invading the Deimos Penninsula,gets called a brother by the enemy commander, Eliphas the Inheriror,of the Word Bearers. In the novelization of the Horus Heresy short story " Inheritor" Eliphas the Inheriror, then Chapter Master of the Ark of Testimony of the traitor Word Bearers legion, battles the ultramarines during the Shadow Crusade( Ultramar System invasion). Again it points Word Bearers lineage. But most importantly, during Dawn of War 2 Chaos Rising, Azariah Kyras,traitor Chapter Master, pledges himself and the legion to the service and worship of Khorne.Had they been Thousand Sons related, i don't think Khorne would have taken it well due to being at odds with Tzeentch and loathing psikers in general.

      I’ve been playing Soulstorm. Few things I’ve thought about. There’s a crashed Ultramarine Thunderhawk in the side of basilisk magnus plateau in the militariums base mission. Since there’s a Grey Knight detachment does that mean the Blood Ravens get mind wiped? Also in video game canon the blood ravens get wiped out because Borele’s strategy sucks. Since we find out later Kyras was intent on destroying everything; did he appoint Borele the commander because he knew he sucked? Or am I reading way too much into things?

    • @HeIsAnAli

      The last is pretty likely: Kyras placed Boreale in a position way the Warp above his competence level to set him up for a fall.
