this is definitely black metal. their first 4 albums are very folky and black metallish, though their most black albums are their first 2. If you want more of this side of Opeth, Advent, In The Mist She Was Standing, Forest of October, Black Rose Immortal or their first song without growls, To Bid You Farewell are good songs from this era.

This song kicks off the still life album. Without spoiling anything else, it tells the beginning of the protagonist’s story as he returns to the village he was banished from to reunite with his lost love Melinda. From this point anything else from the album would be great, Godhead’s Lament is next in the track listing but Moonlapse Vertigo, Serenity Painted Death, Face of Melinda, and White Cluster would all make great reactions from the album as well.

It was a saturday but I had no plans beyond going to town and browsing cds so I went home and put it in my stereo. For the first few minutes I thought it was on loop or something and was like 'what the fuck is this shit'. When the first scream(s) came in it blew my mind and its since been one of my favourite albums ever. It totally changed my direction in music as well and I ended up learning a load of their songs. Still Life is such an epic concept album, The Moor has been one of my favourite songs for well over a decade. The whole album follows the story of this man that returns to his home land from where he was banished, to find the one he loved. It's dark.

The sigh of summer upon my return
Fifteen alike since I was here
Bathed in deep fog, blurring my trail
    Snuffing the first morning rays
Weary from what might have been ages
Still calm with my mind at peace
Would I prosper or fall, drain the past
The lapse of the moment took it's turn
I was foul and tainted, devoid of faith
    Wearing my death-mask at birth
The hands of God, decrepit and thin
    Cold caress and then nothing
I was taken away from my plight
A treason bestowed to the crowd
Branded a Jonah with fevered blood
    Ungodly freak, defiler
Pale touch, writhing in the embers
Damp mud burning in my eyes
    All the faces turned away
And all would sneer at my demise
    Outcast with dogmas forged below
Seared and beaten, banished from where I was born
No mercy would help me on my way
In the pouring rain nothing is the same
    Vows in ashes
    I pledge myself to no-one
    Seethed and spiteful
All shudder at the call of my name
    If you'll bear with me
    You'll fear of me
There is no forgiveness in these eyes
For any of you but one
    Dispel the mist for now
Melinda is the reason why I've come
She is water drops over the pyre
    A thistle in my hands
Stained and torn, aged and brown
    Virtuous shell with kindred innocence
    I awoke from the miasma
    Passing swiftly through the moor
    This is here, waters stir
And in the distance all that was lost
    If you'll bear with me
    You'll fear of me
    You'd never leave me to
    A fate with you

This album is like The Wall by Pink Floyd. There are popular favorites out of the 7 songs. BUT, listening to the whole album from start to finish is a completely different experience than listening to this song and that song. Based on your reactions (and the fact that you don't pause all the time mid-song), I truly truly think you both will love experiencing the entire album as a whole. đŸ€˜đŸ™â€

I remember the first time listening to the song and the transition at 10:20 here (while also having turned up the volume a bit in the quiet parts). Goosebumps, sweat and pure fascination! I was a huge fan of death metal since that day.
I was sort of on the edge about death vocals before that as a teenager... but man did that record change my perspective on what good growling can achieve in terms of emotional depth.

Opeth - "Sorceress" live at Red Rocks. I know a lot (almost all) Opeth fans do not like their newer stuff, but to that I say "It's still Opeth and they are amazing" I really connect with the way they write and draw from the '60s-'70s prog-rock influences. They are so much more than their Black Metal roots.
