Anesthetize is probably one of the best Progressive rock songs created in the past 20-25 years (arguably in totality depending on who you ask), and Steven Wilson has been the King of progressive rock since In Absentia came out back in 2001. I was lucky enough to see this band live back in 2010 right before they stopped touring, and I've also had the pleasure of meeting Gavin Harrison back in December and he was one of the nicest guys I've ever met. Keep up listening to their music, as well as Steven Wilson's solo work (The Raven and HCE are must listens!)

I’m an old school PT fan, but you gotta check these guys out. Every song is good. Over the last week, they’ve joined my favorites right up there with Tool, Opeth and PT. That never happens. Trying to make it vague enough so it’s surprising but enticing enough for you to check it out. You’re not gonna get a bunch of likes on this comment so you just gotta trust me. I discovered this band some years ago and been following the solo project from Steven Wilson since there. I was able to see Steven live and I can honestly say that it was the BEST show I ever seen in my entire life. Music, atmosphere, lights, every aspect of the show just blends together perfectly. If these guys comes together at some point I'm gonna travel to whatever part of the world they are without thinking it twice (already saved money just in case :) ).

Also, Steven’s other project Blackfield in 2007 at Maxwell’s in NJ. For sure some of the best live shows you could ever see. Also, props to John Wesley on the backing vocals here, and playing the main guitar solo live (the one and only Alex Lifeson guested on the album version).

Since you checked out the band Opeth and are now looking into Porcupine Tree, you can do a song where those bands crossover. Porcupine Tree singer Steven Wilson is featured in the Opeth song "Bleak"; and it's a great song off of one of Opeth's classic albums.

I remember my first time hearing this and proceeded to spend a whole day listening to it back to back to back... truly a masterpiece. While I’m here, you should definitely give The Contortionist a listen, Language parts 1 and 2 together is the best gateway to their music

  • @michaelw.carter8729

The length of great music pieces is never ridiculous. I discovered this tune and Gavin Harrison at the same time via a guitar center video of him playing it. After watching it, I opened Apple Music and heard this performance. It’s amazing. I’ve had several friends ask me to make a cover video of it but I won’t. I just want this song to be one that I enjoy listening to.
At the 6:30 mark, Gavin does a fill which impresses Keyboardist, Richard Barbieri as you can see at the 6:34 mark. I’ve been playing drums for 40 years and not even Neil Peart ever put a fill like that one together.
The part that begins at around 9:45 takes my soul out of my body.

Porcupine Tree were one of the most consistently top notch bands that has ever existed. With so many types of music they covered and so many albums released there is really very little that wouldn't be worth a listen. Pop in one of their albums some time in the background when you're busy with something and you just won't be disappointed.

Fun fact, Steven Wilson, the front-man and self taught audio engineer, performs live shows without shoes and socks on. I have attended three of his solo tours when he came near Philly, can confirm this. Now, after 'Trains', 'Arriving Somewhere But Not Here'. This is a song that you should do both studio and live, though like this song, I prefer the live version more. Live version is from Chicago, the show titled 'Arriving Somewhere'. You'll be glad you did.
