      @@brieezy. Barbie left because she knew she could no longer be content in Barbieland after experiencing reality as well as being a doll that Gloria imbued with her own human feelings and experiences. She was changed and the other Barbies would not be able to fully understand those things. She wanted more. (It was the same thing for Frodo in Lord of the Rings as well as The Last Unicorn.)
      But honestly, it'd be nice if you would get off Michelle's back. Even in the film, Sasha said that Gloria was dark and crazy. Let women be "dark". As many times as women are demeaned and depicted as nothing more than objects in a plethora of other films, how about we let Michelle and other women have ONE MOVIE where we can let out our frustrations and crack some dark jokes?

      @@brieezy. Barbie isn't a good person in this movie. She's vain, manipulative, and emotionally abusive to her Ken. She's so self absorbed that the idea of the Kens being treated humanely infuriates her to the point that she turns the other Barbies into Mega-Whore Jezabels to turn the Kens against each other. The entire Kendom situation could have been avoided if the Barbies hadn't treated the Kens like shit.

      @@McMahonHater That's how they was played by the girls to be. The girls wanted to play with Barbie and She was the deal. Ken? Another accessory. It's not before Barbie is infused with "her own" human thinking she think of Ken as an equal.
      That she still don't wanna date, but that's okay, because Ken had his own transformation and discovered he was a person? doll? in his own right, no matter whether Barbie gave him attention or not. He was finally Kenough, and so was the other Kens.
      🤔 I think that's the problem with incels. They crave the woman of their liking and she must agree or she's mean. Can't women see it's their goddam right! She's not an equal, no no, she'd be his accessory! He might play guitar at her.
      An incel definitely doesn't feel Kenough, no matter how he backtalk women with other men. That makes him toxic*
      He must become a person in his own right- with or without a dreamgirl. Then he can relax, lose the toxicity, and feel Kenough!
      Btw,
      incels don't want the average girls, the women "incels". They wouldn't do as accessories)
      * Most women can sense that toxicity (like a shield of hatred) and they carefully back off (because it scares them) which makes the incels even more furious with women. They need to find out who they are, and see their own worth. See that their worth is not attatched to a possible "dreamgirl".

      The movie tapped into this nostalgic place, not necessarily Barbie the toy related, but just the reality of time passing. There’s these little deaths to the phases we go through that are unique to women-hood but simultaneously it’s the birth of another phase. *if that even makes sense🙈* I think that’s why this movie brought tears out for some.

    I think one of the reasons the montage gets us, especially women, is that it's a tribute to girls and women and the experience we carry. We are born without judgment towards ourselves and feel the world is full of possibilities for us. And then we grow up like Barbie entering the real world for the first time and realizing it wasn't constructed with us in mind. So don't be sorry for ugly crying because the tribute did the same to me the first time I saw it because it reminded me of that long-gone feeling of being a young girl and feeling unstoppable before my sense of self hit rock bottom as a teenager. I think you're absolutely spot-on about it being a mix of nostalgia and grief.

    I think the feeling at the end is just seeing other women and sharing a connection. I saw it in theaters with my mom and I couldn't help seeing that montage and thinking about the women in my family in my life, my best friend etc. It's seeing that women come in all shapes, sizes, colors. My mom and I both wore pink for the occasion (we didn't even have anything pink in our wardrobes.) And I cannot tell you the very strange feeling I got seeing a ton of women in the theater lobby, both before and after the film, wearing pink in solidarity. My mom felt it too, she said it felt like a sorority. I didn't know those women and they could have been people I would have never gotten along with. But again, the feeling I got from that shared experience is something I can't forget. It's a very small thing but for me, it made me think of what we could do if we worked together. If we could all wear pink for a movie, not even having met, then what can we achieve when it matters?

    I grew up in an environment where you get made fun of for being "girly". Well of course there still "girly" girls, but you have to be perfect or else you get made fun of. Being a "boyish" girl was the cool thing to be. I was conditioned that liking pink was "lame" and "icky" so I always wore all black like Sasha in the beginning. I hated being a girl. I'm happy that recent media is helping girls and adult girls embrace womanhood and heal our little girls inside. Like colorful friendship bracelets are on trend, liking Taylor swift (which I got made fun of too when I was young), the Barbie movie, and many more.
    You're right there's grief in these tears, grief for my little self, but love as well, much more love for our girlhood.

  • @ChefNourhan
    @ChefNourhan Před 9 měsíci +13

    Everyone went in this movie expecting because it’s “Barbie” it must be just superficial fun, no one expected this smart, heartfelt and thoughtful film.
    The part that broke me and most viewers into tears is the clips of real mothers and daughters along with Billie’s song, those were clips provided by the crew of the film from their own family archives, Greta is a true inspirational genius for doing this. And Billie knew what she was doing writing this song she stated that every word in this song is exactly how she feels, what she didn’t realize or maybe does, is that those words are actually what every woman feels.
    I also really enjoyed Ken’s storyline, it excellently portrays how “lost men” can be so easily be mislead with the ideals of patriarchy and pushed towards the toxic masculinity pipeline, out of a missguided sense of finding any purpose, the type of men who revolve their entire identity around finding a woman to "complete them" end up resenting their dream women and blaming them for their own flaws. When in truth they were more than Kenough, they just needed to focus on their dreams and their own progress outside the scope of finding their Barbies.
    Nothing wrong with trying to find the partner of your dreams but your life shouldn’t revolve around the concept, it should be an extension of you, a choice you make to be there for your partner because you want to, not because a patriarchal society tells you it’s your sole purpose.
    This film is not any shape of form anti-men, if anything it's anti patriarchy. It shows that this idiotic patriarchy hurts everyone not just women. You can have “Dojo-Mojo Casa Houses” without destroying “DreamHouses”
    Thank you for a lovely reaction 💖

She's not interested in him! I'd even go further to say that none of the Barbies were actually bothering the Kens. They never subjugated the Kens. They never made them do anything demeaning and if they weren't okay with how they were being treated (which again, what were the Barbies actually doing to them?) they could have spoken up, just like women have been speaking up for forever to get our rights. Barbieland literally exists as a place where girls don't have to be beholden to the limitations put on them in reality and they can play however they please. Because, lets be honest, just how many women who used to play with Barbies as little girls even had Kens? I had like 4 and I rarely ever played with them as much as I did with Barbie. So again, what is she apologizing for? Honestly think it was a misstep to even put it in the film as it doesn't reflect any wrong doing on Barbie's part.

    You didn't understand the point of the Ken's storyline. In Barbieland the whole joke is that Ken's are treated like women used to be treated and some still are where they are seen as just an accessory to the ones in charge (the Barbies) and the whole I'm just ken and I'm enough line is not them saying we've always known we're the best and we're all 10s no, it's them for the first time validating themselves without needing the approval of a Barbie. And yes Barbie should have apologized like she did just as anyone who leads on someone emotionally their whole life without any intentions of ever reciprocating their feelings just because they don't know what they want in life should. If she didn't want Ken around she could have told him from the beginning she wasn't interested and wanted to break up but she didn't and got into a relationship she never put any effort into just because she thought it was what she was supposed to do. Leaving the person who actually cared about the relationship constantly starving to have their feelings reciprocated and in search of constant validation. Feeling like the only reason Barbie never showed any affection towards him or care for the relationship was because he wasn't enough leading him to spend his days trying to impress her and show her that he is enough and that he is deserving of her love. That's why his whole thing by the end is his whole realization that he is Kenough.

    Actually it was good that Barbie apologized to Ken because at least from my perspective, for the longest time, the Barbies made the Kens feel inferior and due to Gosling's Ken being a bit naive to say the least, he saw a way to show how he mattered by looking to the wrong source which is the patriarchy. They're honestly both kind of at fault while at the same time, they're both kind of the victims. I think that's why I personally enjoyed the movie because it's not solely about female empowerment or toxic masculinity. It's showing both sides and how neither should be overpowering the other. That's just my personal take on it.

    Honestly Ken didn’t deserve an apology, but I’m glad that Barbie gave one to him anyway because it shows that even though she was wronged by him throughout the movie, she still had a great deal of love and respect for him. Ken was like a little boy in the movie discovering what the patriarchy is and falling victim to it just like every little boy growing up does. And instead of realizing that what he’s doing is harmful, he looks past it because he’s just happy to feel cool and seen aka his obsession with horses. It’s not until the end when he realizes that who he is doesn’t have to be defined by what anybody else thinks of him. It’s a very mature message in a film that could have easily made Ken a black and white villain with no development.

    • @furyzxzx
      @furyzxzx Před 8 měsíci +2

      Stfu😂 kens were literally humiliated in Barbieland, not even having a place to sleep. the barbies deserved everything they got. It's a cause and effect thing, Kens took over because of barbies' oppression, not patriarchy. They wanted them to feel the karma. Patriarchy was just a flag like feminism in the real world. Even Ken, in the end, assumed he lost interest when discovered it was not about horses but kept going with his plan. So the apology was very necessary because it was her fault in the first place.

I watched a few men reactors reacting to this and they were all like "yes, thank you for apologizing. Also, they should still give Kens some power." Like, they completely missed the point and it was so infuriating!

    • @michelleneedsahobby
      @michelleneedsahobby  Před 9 měsíci +9

      Funnily enough, the movie made a choice to position Barbie to play the exact role that Gloria criticized. Barbie had to all but hand hold Ken through his realization while simultaneously taking responsibility for his lashing out. The onus to undo the brainwashing was on the Barbies and the onus to illuminate Ken’s worth was also in her hands.
      I guess the movie was trying to keep Barbie’s “graciousness” but that probably could have been achieved without her having to do the heavy lifting. But at the same time the movie is called Barbie so…..🤷🏽‍♀️
      It’s a great watch but not without criticism. tbh I’m more annoyed that I had to Google the name of America Ferrara’s character because the movie only said Gloria’s name once or twice.

      The thing is he did deserve and apology just because the barbies were in charge and the Kens didn't really have much say in anything. What he did was obviously the wrong way to go about things but so was the way barbie treated ken.

      ✨sorry that my answer is long. i tried my best to articulate why some, including myself, felt overcome by certain moments in the movie. 🙈
      Hmm 🤔
      the best way I can describe it is that the movie can invoke the sadness and joy found in the realization that really life IS finite. hence why the movie’s conflict arises when Barbie questions death and her relation to it.
      that, coupled alongside with the social preceptions of what the value of an aging woman is, it brings forth even more emotion. the bus stop scene can be sad because most elderly women aren’t seen as beautiful. they’re relegated to the role of “wise-women” or nothing at all. Unironically Barbie wasn’t saying the elderly woman was beautiful on the inside, she was complimenting her physical beauty.
      as for the other tearjearker scene where barbie becomes human, the montage details the changes and stages we go through in life. you may not have the memory of those moments in your life but the feeling stays in you. Plus the song’s lyrics questioning everything about life and yet having hope that there will be an answer for it all somewhere along the way….yeah I can see why that can make some people cry.
      Don’t feel any type of way if didn’t resonate with you or if it did resonate but it didn’t bring you tears. It’s perfectly okay not to feel the need to cry at this.

    Id disagree I think Barbie should've definitely apologised to ken and it's good that she did. The same way he should've apologized for what he did. It was a good movie altogether
    When I watched it in the cinema it was an incredible experience because having an entire cinema cry at the same time and going through this very human experience together was truly incredible. Everyone in that cinema was just connected and we all understood each other. What's insane is that I moved to a country to the other side of the world yet we still all felt the same things eventhough we all have been through different things, but we all had that in common. For me it was the grief of the little girl in me who had to grow up too fast who somehow felt understood in this movie

  • @tokkibeanie

    Ken stole the show for me. I didn’t think I’d like this since I wasn’t that into dolls specifically Barbie growing up. The whole point of Ken was a identity crisis. Literally nobody or my friends or cousins played with Ken by himself without Barbie. That’s why it was always Barbie and Ken not just Ken. I did feel Barbie was mean at the beginning when he just wanted to hang out tbh. Ken has always been more of an accessory to Barbie. Overall I definitely enjoyed even though it became cringe with repetitive patriarchy bit. It didn’t hurt the film but when I get it on blu ray I’ll be skipping those parts.

    That ending really is powerful. And Barbie’s joy at just being human, at being a woman, is wonderful.
    I also don’t think she should’ve apologised, she showed no interest in Ken and his obliviousness to that and his obsession with her was not her responsibility, but that being said, Barbie is fundamentally kind. It’s annoying that they didn’t have Ken apologise too, considering how selfish he was and the fact that he oppressed all the Barbie’s.
