Unpopular opinion - Why The Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 Might Not Be Worth The Hype

  • I’ve been a huge fan of ultra wide displays for a while now. In fact, I actually use two 49 inch screens as my daily-drivers. So when Samsung released their 49 inch OLED gaming monitor I just had to get my hands on it. And now, I've got mixed feelings about it - it has its highs and lows. Let's dive into why.
    To test this monitor for colour accuracy we used Portrait Displays Calman colour calibration software.

    Samsung's quality control is absolutely abysmal. This is a warning to anyone who's interested - this monitor is incredible but I've had a lot of issues with it. The first one I ordered had a huge scan line in the center of the screen after 2 hours of use. My second one has no scan line issues, but constantly has visual rainbow pixel noise cutting in and out for a split second. Samsung's warranty and technical support is also horrible - took me 3 hours just to get them to help me replace the first one, just to get another one with a major issue.

      I've heard a lot about their QC, just ordered an OLED myself and already have been aware of the burn in risk, totally using pixel shift and a background that isn't static, or turning off the monitor itself. I wanted it to be good for gaming too but not all games support it's resolution, that's a drawback, but looking to use it mainly for media/productivity tasks, and anything beats the 60hz 5ms response time $80 acer monitor I am currently using for gaming ( and still whooping ass with it haha ) I got the four year samsung care just due to how many people I have seen complaining about the quality control.

SO i will try this one now and hopefully it wont have so many pixel issues . at half price its a risk worth taking for this amazing panel

    I just got a 49'' CRG9 2 weeks ago and i love the color, contrast and brightness of this thing. I play Star citizen and going from a 40'' 4K 660hz TV to this, is insanely better. Ya i understand the differences between TVs and MONITORS. I do miss the vertical real estate though. i lost a good 7inches of vertical screen. I am still thinking of doing triple 34'' 1440p R1800 monitors. I would like more curve, more wrap-around. Cause right now the edges of this are farther away from my eyes than a set of R1800 would be.

Also in the recent months cleartype was updated to work on oled, at the same time as when Windows 11 made the taskbar completly invisible so we can avoid burn in using empty black desktop and hidden taskbar with all the classic desktop icons. I own the original G9, and I have been having nothing but issues with it for years. The screen flickering has been an issue from the start, and Samsung tried to gaslight me multiple times into thinking it was my other hardware. No device I own can longer project on the full screen without persistent dropouts and power cycling, so I opt to run it in PIP mode 100% of the time; which is a huge bummer.

      been trying to figure out if this is possible myself - better still would be if you could offset the display so that you could run a smaller window for apps like that (smart tv mode) and then reserve the rest for the computer at whatever resolution you wanted... not sure that this is possible but the manual seems to suggest it's possible... about to pull the trigger on buying one but for some reason I am hesitating - I have a 43in Samsung UW now that's DFHD and a va panel - hate the color bleed of blacks and want 1440 instead of 1200 vertical... no need for 4k cause it is too much a drain on graphics (though I could push it with my 7800xt the trade off isn't worth in IMHO) ugghhhh

    5:21 - Is the difference really that stark? Where OLED has complete darkness in one game passed a certain part vs grey and you can see more things (like more enemies or the map)? I would choose the other panel then... Just because you have deeper blacks doesn't mean I want to see less!

    • @A2KMedia
      @A2KMedia  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Indeed, OLED's deep blacks can sometimes make certain game details less visible. This is a matter of personal preference. Some gamers prefer other panels for better visibility in dark scenes, while others love OLED's superior contrast. It's all about finding what works best for you!

    • @socialreport2836
      @socialreport2836 Před 11 měsíci +2

      Also, you will see more details in shadows on OLED, like crevices in stones and small stars, which may not be visible on LED displays. Black Equalizer also exists on OLED. Small details can't be seen on IPS displays due to glow and less contrast, or on VA displays, which have less contrast. On OLED displays, they are perfectly visible but not all of them because a small black crash exists on OLED.

    HDR does not work like that. There is no "HDR400" for an OLED display, since OLED does not need 1000 or more nits to achieve HDR. You've mixed different displays and specs. - OLED G9 is an OLED, an infinite contrast panel, which can have HDR due to black going to extreme low as in actually being turned off or being extremely low lit. It having eventually low brightness is a matter of environment you will use it in, not having anything to do with HDR.

    Thanks for this review. Having already really good g9 neo, I will not upgrade for this g9 oled. As stated, maybe on 32:9 / 4k...truly hdr. Micro led seems to be a better compromise for productivity/gaming workload.

      @@A2KMediaG9 is very good for productivity work but for HDR gaming G9 Neo is considerably better.
