thx for your efforts ..... since my room (living room) isn't perfect I'm always looking for solutions to overcome the issues with my speakers ... at the moment I'm considering two options: 1.) stevenslateaudio.com/vsx ... a hybrid approach for bedroom-producers or professional musicians 2.) spl.audio/en/spl-produkt/phonitor-one-d/ a hardware-based room-simulation solution for productions with headphones .... it would be quite interesting to know how you think about it. for whatever its worth, i've moved like 4 times in the last year (really bad luck) so I've experimented with a ton of placement, some good some bad. I find the best setup for a "small" studio is to put the monitors as close to the back wall as possible and stack as much treatment as you can right behind them. This is a poverty way to emulate soffit mount, which really helps eliminate the back wall reflection, but you need thick treatment to make the most of it. Good video and good luck!

Yo streaky you said you are gonna tell us everything so I have a suggestion if ur interested. I would really like to see you getting into the details of metering. How do you personally setup your ballistics in your spectrum, correlation etc. meters (and WHY?). Im currently fidgeting around a lot and come to use 3rd octave bars rather than plots because I feel like I can't comprehend too much "smoothed" information efficiently, but I would really like to see your take on this! keep it going

Thank you soo much for sharing generously of your knowledge..i have learnt a lot from you in the last 1 year...i have a question (s)...as a music producer, i run into a situation frequently when trying to mix a beat am working on that am not always able to get it to -10 lufs without hitting the limiter hard and getting 5-6 db of gain reduction...i try rebalancing the mix (which i loved), using saturation, clipping...but am usually not happy with the results...then there are a few times were i get really lucky, i don't need to hit the limiter hard at all and am were i want to be loudness wise and i don't know what's different am doing...please do a video helping us understand what type of combination of kick and bass, etc or mix strategies that can help make beats (in my case Afrobeats/Afroswing) have good loudness potential...thanks in Advance

Hi Streaky, I know I'm late to this video, but I hope you'll read this message cause I think it might help a few fellow apprentice! At 4.15min when you talk about measuring the triangle relative to the tweaters, we can see you chair. I noticed that the back of your chair probably don't go pass your shoulders. When I started mixing, I had a "high back 'support leather chair with a wide head rest and it took me a while to realize that my chair was causing reflections that affected my work. We can see an exemple of such a design at 16.25min. Sorry for my english, it is not my main language. I did not have the time to watch all you vids yet, so you might have covered this and I am just not aware. Have a nice day!
If you’re on a budget like a lot of people, go to Lowe’s and buy a ton of cinderblocks. They’re dirt cheap, super rigid, and once they’re in place they will NEVER move.

Can you talk about flooring - wood versus carpet, etc. My home studio is quite dialed in as for sound, at least I think since my mixes are sounding great, but I have carpeting on the floors (it's a 2nd floor - one above ground level, I think in the UK you'd call that a 1st floor), and thinking of putting in some wood plank flooring.
If I could go back I'd go carpet, with wood just where console chairs roll. There are much more important things to worry about.

Do you have any kind of standard mixing guidelines regarding basic levels. e.g. kick at -12Db and snare at -10Db bass at -14Db and then mix the rest of the track from there. is it a per track/genre basis? this is something that i always struggle with. which sound is the point at which i anchor my mix from?

How about a room where you have a window instead of the frontwall ? Is this causing dip the low frequency range ? This results in a mix with way lot bassy , more like transient not translating well (false idea of the attack time if you will)
So I think I'm really lacking some depth it that area... I can't see how I can fix this ?

Did i Need outboard gear for a Perfect mastering? Or Is it only into the Box also possible.
I have bit of a conundrum. I have a pair of smaller 5 inch PSI Speakers with PSI Sub and then a pair of Yamaha HS8'S with the Yamaha sub. The PSI setup sounds dramatically better and the sweet spot is much wider more pleasant to listen to. Should i make the PSI's my mains even though there smaller and have the Yams on the inside? Just going by feel here.

Thanks for the Video!- You didn;t mention anything about the space between speaker and back wall / Corner - Is there a minimum space you want between speaker and back wall? And if it's a smaller room how far from a corner before you minimize bounceback?
This vid could have gone on all day really 😂😂 a lot of those things are super dependent on the speaker types and room they are going in...my speakers for example can be either close or freestanding due to the tech in them but others will not like being close to the wall for other reason #minefield
@@Streaky_com Thank you for your feedback! I've got Event 20/20's. Not the highest end. Being bracket mounted to the wall (With rubber dampeners) I think I will move them off slightly as there is only about 60mm's off the wall and low ends are sounding big!
I always though that ideally you don't want a rectangular room. Symmetrical - yes, but not rectangular to avoid standing waves.
Yes good point....I think 'Trapezoidal' is best, but rough rectangle better than a square or having the back wall to close I've found works.

I think my studio monitor setup is good, and I get mixes that translates well on stereo speakers, but when I play the same tracks on a 5.1 channel speaker setup, it's not the same and It's kinda muddy. What am I doing wrong here? Any pin points you could tell for me to try out? Thank you!

Hi Streaky,I use the Quested big soffit-mounted 3-way monitors(HQ210) in my studio.When I was going to setup them I check the manual Quested recommand to set two monitors and listener in a 2.1m-3m triangle and push the listener 0.5-1m forward into the triangle,and explained this listener position would be better than in the point of the triangle.Is this the right way for every mid-field or main monitor?
Yeah I like to sit just inside the v but I think that naturally happens when you lean in or stand 👍
what issue happens when the monitors are too far apart? I have trouble fitting my 3 displays between the two monitors and keeping myself at the right distance

I am trying to get better at mixing, I'm doing ok with the progress but I still have cloudy knowledge of the low mids and down. I know that cutting certain frequencies can make the track less muddy and allow it to breath but even though I mix with this in mind I always seem to end up with a thicker than needed mix. Is there any advice or is it just continued practice?
"If u can't hear, you can't mix" - that's what a lot of people say... So... Following this thought... I don't know if you have a good pair of speakers and if you have a treated room, but maybe you aren't hearing the problems because the sound doesn't come to you as it should. Makes sense? I hope it helped somehow... (Now that I noticed, you posted this comment 1 year ago... Did you have any progress, anything you discovered since then?)
@@raphabmroque Thanks for the reply. I have since brought the Slate VSX headphones and they have helped quite a lot now I've got a little workflow to go through. I still feel that the best way to learn would be to be in the same room as a great mixer but the headphones are a great solution
Spotify does retain levels song to song inside an album, can you just turn up or down the master-level (under -2dbTP) To get the songs in a nice playback level that fits the songs?

Hey. I’ve always been struggling a bit with making my songs loud enough when mastering. It’s been hard to get them to a commercial loudness without clipping. I use fab filter pro l2 and I can get the song to around -9LUFS but it’s hard to get them any louder. So I wanted to know how u do it
Take my mastering workshop below it's a good starting point to work from...
This demo is from 30 years ago, it would seem. These days, you use laser pointers and laser distance measurers instead. Also, with Dolby Atmos and Sony immersive surround schemes abound, "equilateral traingle" with just 2 source point speakers is old news. It worked great in stereophonics's heyday, though. Also, not everyone is a fan of using a ton of monitors in the same room. Which is why man studio monitor mfrs (Focal, Neumann, etc) have 3-ways that can be instantly switched to lower rung 2-way mixcube mode.
Your room sizes?
I have a fairly large room and can put 14’ to 16’ between the speakers with plenty of room to pull back to that sweet spot. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to a triangle that large? I currently do around 9’ between.

Nice info taught in a good and simple way! I have a question about adding a second pair of speakers versus selling the existing ones and getting a single, more expensive pair. In my case I've had Adam P11A's for 15 years so I know them well but find the low end a bit hard to judge. Used to have the 10" Adam sub but dont need that much extension below 35-40 Hz. Have seen loads of people rave about the Focal Alpha 65's (including ex Adam A7X users) despite the low price. Wondering if I should get these to complement my Adams or if I should sell the Adams and get something like the Focal Shape 65 / Hedd Type 07 / EVE SC 307? Good old P11A'S + new decent complementary set or a single higher end set I'm not familiar with at all?
I would try and get some three way speakers like the focal trios, hedd type 20 or Neumann 310 all good and you’ll be happy you changed

zero absorbtion as I have the Kii speakers that bounce the sound off the wall...check them out pretty cool tech :)

The "38% Rule" should no longer be used as a suggestion. It's close but not accurate. 38% is too close to the 4th harmonic null at 37.5%. The real listening position is at 39.6%. Why? Because it's exactly in-between the 4th (37.5%) and 6th (41.7%) harmonic null. We have 37.5% + 41.7% / 2 = 39.6%. So if you are keeping your head in-between the harmonic nulls, then your possible Listen Position options will always be the same in any room: 32.8%, 39.6%, or 45.8%.
Room length makes a big difference is where the Listening Position will be located. There's no way a Listening Position of 32.8% or 39.6% will work in a small length room. Small rooms will have a Listening Position of 45.8%, medium length rooms will be 39.6%, and only rooms with longer lengths will be 32.8%.
Overall the 38% Rule is inaccurate, is outdated, and doesn't work for every room length.

2nd Harmonic nulls = 25%, 75%
3rd Harmonic nulls = 16.7%, 50%, 83.3%
4th Harmonic nulls = 12.5%, 37.5%, 62.5%, 87.5%
5th Harmonic nulls = 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, 90%
6th Harmonic nulls = 8.3%, 25%, 41.7%, 58.3%, 75%, 91.7%
7th Harmonic nulls = 7.1%, 21.4%, 35.7%, 50%, 64.3%, 78.6%, 92.9%
So…. Can you explain this in laymen’s terms? Or use measurements as reference? Please. 🙏
@@samgonza1975 The best Listening Positions fall in between the Axial Room modes, or nulls. Most people are familiar with the 1st Harmonic Null, which is at 50% of the room. If you put your Listening Position at 50% the lower frequency at that point is reduced. If you mix and master at that point you will naturally want to turn the bass up, because you think it sounds too low. That's a simple reason why you want to avoid sitting at a nullified point in the room. Now if we start to map out all of the other Harmoic Nulls, 2nd harmonic = 25% and 75%, 3rd harmonic = 16.7%, 50%, 83.3%, 4th harmonic = 12.5%, 37.5%, 62.5%, 87.5%, 5th harmonic, 6th harmonic, 7th harmonic, etc. you will find that the best three Listening Positions that fall in-between null points are at: 32.8%, 39.6%, and 45.8%.

Streaky, you didn't address two huge elephants in the room (pun): distance between the speakers and the front wall (behind the speakers). Experimenting with that distance massively effects the quality of bass and midrange. Too close to the wall, you get too much bass reinforcement and a muddied midrange. Too far, no bass reinforcement so the speakers will sound thin. You have to experiment to find the right distance. There is no avoiding the truth of listening. Trust your ears. The other issue is toe in. You suggest just point the speakers straight at you. This is not a universal rule. You have to experiment. You can point the speakers straight out and then slowly toe them in while listening to get the right tonal balance. Each speaker manufacturer tunes the crossover to balance between on axis and off axis performance. You have to find what works best in your room listening to music you know by heart and what it should sound like. Just as you suggested about compression, applying it is all about listening, it is the same for speaker set-up. You can make great speakers sound terrible if they are badly set up (jammed up against the wall in the corners for example - unless they were specifically designed for that placement). Most speakers will suck jammed up against the wall, unless they are Kii Threes, and even then I bet they sound better when they aren't against the wall. Soffit mounting is a very special approach and cannot be imitated just like that.
I didn’t go there on purpose as it all depends on the speakers in question...I would probably discuss that when taking about putting the room together around your speakers of choice...I’m trying to keep these as basic as possible as I see a lot of these very basic issues in loads of studios
