I had a Newfoundland dog try and rescue me from a large puddle. If you are in water of any depth, they will do everything to get you out!
I wish there was footage of this.
Bilbo made a significant difference whilst he was on the beach, people want to pet a big friendly dog so it gives the lifeguards a chance to pass on safety messages. Bilbo went into local schools for educational visits to spread the water safety message. Before Bilbo came, there was at least 30 rescues a season,on his first season at Sennen Cove; It went down to 18 the next season and his last full-time season; lifeguards only needed to make 3 rescues in Sennen Cove.

Our Newfoundland (Clifford) would try to rescue our kods when they were swimming and at first accidentally scratched them, so we got him the biggest life jacket for dogs we could find and trained him to swim in front of them so they could grab onto the handle of his life jacket, then he would pull them in. Cliff was a brown Newfoundland, looked just like Bilbo. ♡
The dog is the most beautiful creature on planet earth :-)

Bilbo is clearly very capable . Many human lifeguards would struggle to rescue 2 casualties at the same time.
This is a standard test all RNLI lifeguards have to pass. It's based on the assumption the the average man weighs 11.5 stone or 161 pounds.
If you saw the first video, Bilbo 's handler explains that what Bilbo does is similar to the Newfoundlands of the past. They were used to rescue whalers who had fallen overboard and drag them back to the mother ship.
Bilbo lived a long good life. I read the book by J'mo. Brilliant book, would highly recommend it!
Just read the book and yes highly recommended. 12 years old when he died in 2015. I wonder how long the Newfoundland that was fed on pork pies lasted? Probably half of Bilbo's age!

Two of us, adult males, conned my leashed Newf off a sandbar into the ocean. Once the dog couldn't walk on all fours, she stood on her hind legs. After circling me twice and finding no lap to climb into, about five feet of water she struck out for the shire, so powerful that the TWO of us couldn't hold her, or ourselves, in the water.
Openwater rescue, even with no training or exoerience, seems to be in their genes.
It's not fair. Bilbo didn't know it was a competition, otherwise he would do it even faster...

That was great, I think the dog could do better with a floatation device around it's body though.
No that would mess with his swimming and movement in the water and he would not be able to do his job properly. Newfies are meant for water work, they do not doggy paddle they have a form of breaststroke that is perfect for what they love to do
