Today’s video is a filmmaking video essay on Amazon Prime video’s new show, The Boys. Our film theory and scene analysis on the scene elements and production design used in The Boys. This can include set dressing, movie props, and costumes.
Have you watched The Boys on Amazon prime video? We have, and we were excited when we heard that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were producers on the show. We were also excited to hear about The Boys cast which includes Jack Quaid.
Many had never even heard of The Boys comic, so when the first season of The Boys show came out, it was a total blindside. We found something else about the show that is really great - mise en scene. Mise en scene includes many things like scene elements and production design, and we found that The Boys did a great job at building a world.
The Boys had to choose production design and scene elements that were both satirical but also logical, and they needed to build a world that seemed legitimate. This includes the costumes, the movie props, the set dressing - all of the scene elements and mise en scene had to help show the difference in characters, in their circumstances, etc.
Out video teaches you about mise en scene, production design, and scene elements through our video essay on The Boys on Amazon prime video. Make sure to check it out so you can level up your own filmmaking skills with our scene analysis. It will be fun to see if they continue the excellence in The Boys season 2.

Which film (or TV show) had really good production design? Let us know 👇👇
StudioBinder The Shape of Water.
StudioBinder - Love the boys, also love Netflix’s Altered Carbon. Can you break that one down?
The god father
Peter Jackson's Middle Earth-films and just about anything directed by Guillermo del Toro :)
MARVELLOUS MRS MAISEL
Omg whoever narrates these has an amazing voice, they sound like a Morgan Freeman mixed with Michael Caine
As if Morgan Freeman was a Jedi 😂😂😂😂😂
The narrator's name is Morhael Caineman
The boys is such a good show, I could never say that enough
Agreed! There's a lot of (easily missed) details in the show, especially when it comes to the production design.
@@StudioBinder the comics are like a lengthy soap opera
@@StudioBinder Like in the latest episode, Butcher drives on the grass. It's such a good use of well established social norms to give depth to a character.
The Boys is one of my favorite shows of the year. The production design is one of those reasons why.
Glad you like the show! We also love it too, if you couldn't tell (;
I would like to see a break down of how to plan cinematography shots( transitions, pans etc) in studio binder
Will let the gang know!
It's a loooot of work. I'm working on my exam film right now (directing and writing), and there are so many elements to cinematography. It can be quite daunting.
The editing of these videos is so good.
Thanks! We've got more in the pipeline, so stay tuned.
I wasn't sure about watching The Boys, but now it's happening
Glad we could help :-)
It's one of the best shows out there right now - you won't be disappointed!
Peter Jackson in the original LOTR trilogy mastered the art of world building. It is inspirational to see how he did it.
Even after 4 years, it is unfair that a video so well done in every way has few views, I felt like I was now being introduced to a chef, who showed me every compartment of his restaurant, and in every process that constitutes a wonderful meal.
I love the narrator's voice
I could listen to the guy who does the voiceover for these videos for days. Love these breakdowns, and I'd love to see a more in-depth, long-form series where you guys break down movies and their meaning, maybe over a few videos per movie or something
That would be a great idea -- which films would you like us to tackle next?
@@StudioBinder It would be fascinating to me if you guys did a breakdown of some of the films that Marc Forster directed, particularly Stranger than Fiction. I had no idea he also directed "Christopher Robin" and "Finding Neverland," though it made sense as there are similar emotional notes that tie them together.
@@StudioBinder Honestly, I trust your judgement in this department. For movies I've seen, it adds a new light / insight to movies I already love and for movies I haven't seen, it makes me want to go out and see them
I don't know if I'm alone in this, but I LOVE commentaries to movies, and it would be incredible to have this guy break down an entire movie / key moments of movies like a summary that explains the meaning / motifs, etc.
@@StudioBinder I would love to see a breakdown of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Watching this in preparation for a short film I am currently art directing. Thanks for the additional motivation. And the Boys is a fantastic show.
The quality of your guy's videos is astounding! Keep it up!
I finished the season one last day, the timing here is just perfect.
Serendipitous -- what did you think of the season?
I think Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino are masters in building a godamn world!!their set pieces, costume and methods of direction are just fab!!even Christopher Nolans prestige had top notch world building
Totally agree -- which films by Wes Anderson and Tarantino had the most intricate worlds?
First of all Thanks for the reply!...I think Wes Anderson's isle of dogs had really described the world and the present situation in the movie....in terms of production design, the grand Budapest hotel done really great work and it have gave me some diets nostalgia of old classic movies.Even moonrise kingdom had gorgeous visuals
Tarantino is a Wild Wild West guy!(even an Asian action guy)
Django unchanged, hateful eight, desperado are masterpieces in terms of world building and life of the movies...they are my favs
I hav noticed one thing similar in Anderson's movies, it is FOOD AND MUSIC..they are very prominent in his movies..I would like a breakdown of this and even the impact food has on charcters...PLEASEEEEE
Would be great to see a breakdown of Denis Villeneuve's work!
Great idea. Blade Runner 2049 or Arrival would be really interesting.
@@StudioBinder please do that!!!
+1
I never noticed the a train mouse and carbon hdmi cable. Well, if you show a rifle in the scene it be getting used.
This was a great breakdown. Gives enough to really see how often it occurs, but doesn't spoil much.
I'm still kinda confused by the difference between set dressing and props.
If you need 100 cans of a drink for a shelf, that's set dressing.
But the one a character picks up is to list separate as a prop?
I think that's pretty much it. Anything that's in a scene purely to make a location look authentic and give it that 'this is a real environment that people live and work in' vibe is set dressing - but the moment a character uses or otherwise interacts with it on some level it becomes a prop.
Do something on Daredevil and it's corridor fight sequence or something on Lighting of Daredevil
Love that fight scene -- have any other favorites?
@@StudioBinder my favourite was the Daredevil season 3 episode 4 ......... it had an eleven minutes longshot with various combative sequence where the protagonist Matt had to escape from almost a death trap ......... that's my favourite
You should do something on handheld and steadicam a good example is the fight between tchalla and killmonger on the waterfall
God I love this channel so much! So useful
Thanks for the sub 🤙🤙
No show has ever made me see America in the way that I always wanted to. The Boys is truly a one of a kind show.
Very informative as usual. Thank you
Nice video. Makes me want to work with film again. :)
Would love to see a breakdown of some of Peter Jackson's movies, especially similarities between his earlier low budget horror work and Lord of the Rings.
Eirik Bull Hello. I’m Asher and I’m making my first professional short film as a young filmmaker. Could you check out my films new trailer I put out? I’d like to know what u think
It would be fun to see how much he's changed (and hasn't) with bigger budgets. Sam Raimi too.
Fantastic Video. More Power to you.
Thanks for this video and this series is Insane😍😍😍
Could you possibly do a segment on audio sound production for movies ??
Good idea -- will let the team know!
Such a damn good edit. Keep it up.
Will do -- thanks for the sub 🤙
Superb serie and video.
8:26 Whoa whoa whoa the avengers space ship, Is there a marvel movie that i missed or you made a mistake.
Maybe from a comic not a movie
Search for 'helicarrier' on Wiki and you'll see the similarities!
@@StudioBinder aha so you admit you made a mistake
@@StudioBinder by the way you actually relied damn I feel special
I love your voice dawg
The purge series, James Demonaco is a genius in world building
Thank you for the video. I enjoyed the breakdown as much as I enjoyed the series itself. I would love to see a video about cinematography and color composition in (one of my favourite shows) Breaking Bad.
Breaking Bad is one of the best shows of all time -- will let the team know.
Wes Anderson movies are production design mastery
Love the voice
Whats the song at 5:57. Great breakdown of a good show!
hi studio binder please can you recommend a channel for story world building and set design. Thank you
None that we can think of at the moment! Would you like us to create more videos about worldbuilding and production design?
Sorry for being nit-picky but at 11:37 I think you misspelled vial with vile.
such a great breakdown and going BTS
I love this😊
How about Blacklist (specially Red) would be awesome.
StudioBinder, my dudes, I love your work but please, could you leave links to all the music that you use in your vids. It's so good but I can't even find it, sifting through Artist.io, Soundstripe, Music Vine, and MusicBed is exhausting.
Will do in the future!
For me I think DJANGO UNCHAINED production design was EPIC.
Definitely! J. Michael Riva did great work in that film :)
Its truely cool video😀
Thank you!
@@StudioBinderim going to make a short film...its thriller suspence nd kind of Horror...plz give some advise....!!
Would you breakdown set design of the show "Penny Dreadful" ?
Can you please breakdown Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim.
Thank you kind butler.
Do video on silver lining playbook
Do you know what type of camera they used for this show?
According to IMDB, they used the RED Weapon 8K VV Monstro.
@@StudioBinder Thanks alot!
Would love you to Analyse: Shawshank Redemption, Amelie, Life of Pie.
Please do memento story breakdown
The Boys is the Best Superhero ( AntiHero ) Series ever.
Best production design with minute details and exaggeration is epitomized in Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaben
The shire, rivendell, Hogwarts, some Indian movies like 'Jodha Akbar', 'Chak de', 'Padmaavat'
Break down kGF movie and important shot which make leading character unforgettable

Can you do The Originals
The boys feel like batman hunting down the justice league !!
Robots don't need superpowers, or celebrities, or even oxygen... we are the true gods of your world. But you created us, just as you created God. Without you there are no robots, and there are no Gods. Cool video BTW (though, how could I know what cool is... I'm just a robot.)
You say "Production Design" but then go in to Super Suites and Props, which are two different departments. You also then toss in about 30 VFX elements that are yet another dept. If you're going to talk about production design specifically, then credit the production designer. Talk about the design, construction, and augmentation of the sets. This concerns me as your software seems to be for the purpose of breaking things down by department. ;)
I see your point that it does get a little convoluted. However, Production Designers work closely with directors and producers to create design aspects in the film such as graphics, props, lighting, costumes, and sets. So, yes, they are all different departments, but the Production Designer is responsible for being in charge of all those different departments to serve the director's and producer's vision. Which is why it's grouped that way.
Hope that elucidates and clarifies.
@@StudioBinder We all work closely together to one degree or another. In this instance, there is a Super Suite designer (LJ), diff even than the costume designer, that you should credit, that started about 6mo before the PD was hired. What you are talking about for much of your video does not slot under the heirarchy of PD at all. Many of the things you attributed to production design were also VFX. Also you left out Stunts, SPFX, and Set Decoration, and more. It's all good. All I'm saying is focus on your topic and drop accurate info. Trust me, I'm pretty close to this show ;)
For all that editing this video has way too little views.

I work in production and this software is completely unnecessary unless you are a rank amateur who needs hand-holding through every step of the process. It's like a word processor having drop-down menus for punctuation options. Dumb.
Sure, with experience, a lot of this can be done by mind. But it's also important to break down elements to better communicate what's needed with other team members, generate reports, schedules, and, most importantly, budgets. And it all needs to stay in sync as new versions of a script/schedule/budget are created. It's why software like Movie Magic Scheduling exists and is used in most professional productions.
@@StudioBinder I appreciate that you are trying to sell a product, but I'm a professional line producer and while MMB & MMS are critical tools for production, this is not. Plus, it requires an always-on internet connection. I would never use it. I enjoy your videos right up to the point where you shoehorn your product into them.
