Of course! Are there questions that you have for future production designers coming on to the show?

Weirdly enough i DID notice the design in Uncut Gems because the whole thing is so chaotic and kinda feels so insane that it looks real? But it didn’t take me out of the story, it drew me in further.
Never ever thought any of it was on a soundstage.
It felt all « on location » and the constant overlap and insane direction just grabs you by the hair at 200mph so you dont think about it.

Definitely feel like the busy look of the sets contribute to the chaotic feeling of the movie!

That brings me back, I remember a long time ago working on a production about teenagers, I had to create and populate multiple my-space accounts (yes that long ago), then get the actors to take over and talk to each other over it for a few weeks.

The production designer is typically the highest paid member of the art department (according to IATSE 891 2021 rate sheet), and it has the SECOND highest position (the art director) making $52.44 per hour. It's easy to work 60+ hours a week when you're making that kind of money.

woooow I have dreamed of this video since I saw Uncut Gems.
I am very interested in production design especially in the independent field. Yes, Wes Anderson movies look very nice but it's the work in movies like Uncut Gems that really blow my mind. literally in each frame you can see crystals, gold and blue tones.
It is possible to create an aesthetic consistency not only by smearing a series of colors on the walls, but with each small object that is seen on the screen, creating a connection between completely different places and scenes. (BTW, Howard's showroom is one of my favorite sets in history)
Lastly (omg I'm a total nerd) in the scene where Howard enters his office to fall asleep and the musical piece "f * ck you Howard" plays, the camera pans right at the exact moment so that when the plasma ball enters to frame, a synth sounds, as if the same object produced the sound, MINDBLOWING!
Thanks for all Sam, you are a great inspiration !!!!

It would be awesome if you could ask them about their work or collaboration with the DP and vice versa, for example if Sam wants a color consistent and the DP has a color of light that changes the color that Sam wanted, how that relationship works?

I really don't understand why Production Design is so under spoken about and unknown to the general public. It's literally everything you are seeing on screen besides the actors. Even lighting if the source is seen on camera, falls under the responsibility of Production Design. Thanks for helping our department become wider known.

When I saw that shot with the wire, it really bothered me. I don't think the white network wire was a good choice at all (unless it going to be used to strangle someone). The other blue and black wire feel organic in the scene. Even the white router is fine.. But that white wire is annoying and distracting. I'm on the DP side on this one.

5:11 does this Fair Use submission become unnecessary when the project they appear in is NOT a COMMERCIAL production intended to make a profit, but is instead a freely available (no charge to view thus no profit) and intended as a kind of public service message or a film intended solely to educate?
