Italia 90: The Most CONFUSING World Cup Ever

- The 1990 World Cup is probably one of the strangest World Cups I've looked into. One of the worst on the pitch and seemingly one of the best culturally.
Today, we look into it.

Fun fact: the public in Napoli applauded Maradona for his efforts against Italy, and while this nowadays is seen as a sign of respect and sportsmandhip (see Juve fans against Ronaldo in Champions League), the Italian FA decided to never host another Italy match in Napoli again. To this day, that was the last game that Italy played in the stadium that now bares the name "Diego Armando Maradona"
Maradona is Naples 🐐
@@angelow2562 Maradona is the GOAT period.
Now that is an interesting fact
It was really controversial
@@alfonsocascone6148 won't call the goat. Messi beats him in longevity
As a Costa Rican, this world cup has been one of the most beloved ones in our history.
Italy 90 was our first world cup ever and we managed to beat Scotland and Sweden. And we managed to barely lose against Brazil. It was our first world cup, and we managed to go to the round of 16.
The players that played for CR during this world cup are seen as super heroes till this day. And the coach (Bora Milutinovic) is seen as a god.
If they are seen as super heroes today I can’t the imagine the reception the 2014 squad got for almost making it to the semi finals .
As a Swede it's a different story. This is regarded as Swedens worst football tournament ever. We started against Brazil and lost 1-2, OK. Then we faced a rather old version of Scotland and lost 1-2, OK... And then there was the last match against Costa Rica who all the journalists claimed was definately easy to beat. And we lost the ¨easy¨ game with 1-2 and marched out of the World Cup 1-2,1-2.1-2. Hernan Medford scored the winner. Congratulations to Costa Rica.
@@goranurengard Yeah, but the next world cup in USA... Greetings from Bulgaria ;)
It was a damn shame Luis Gabelo Conejo got injured, maybe if he hadn't than Costa Rica might have defeated Czechoslovakia in the round of 16. We will never know. 🤷🏻
As a German this worldcup was really important to us as we lost the two finals prior in 1982 and 1986 this World Cup especially after the Wall went down was a important step for our mindset
I think the WC wasn't an important step, but it solidified said step into history.
We rode on a wave of enthusiasm, which made our strongest asset - teamwork - even greater. I think this step was there before the tournament but the win screamed its success out into the world.
@@gandalf_thegrey you also lost the final on 1945. This one was very important for you to show your supremacy
@@gandalf_thegrey Germany having doping
Germany have lost more finals than any other team
@@angusyoung5398 nah its better that we lost our you would speak german my friend
Fun fact when Argentina beat Italy, much more people entered the stadium after the 80th minute when the doors were opened to let the fans out of the stadium to watch Italy lose just to see Maradona play for free without tickets ( my mum and dad were there)
Why ?
@@lexkanyima2195 Maradonna is one of the very few to genuinely reach GOAT status. He was a one of one in his own time.
@@lexkanyima2195 Maradona was a sensation in Napoli. Rightfully so.

The 2014 Cup ended up being quite traumatic to me (I'm Brazilian lol), but until the semifinals that was the coolest Cup I'd watched. Costa Rica leading a group that had Italy, England and Uruguay; Spain, the title holders, getting a 5x1 thrashing in their first match and then being eliminated by Chile; a shower of goals in the group stage; legends like Messi, Suarez, Neymar, C. Ronaldo, Müller etc all at their peak...
Still, 2002 Korea/Japan remains my personal favourite

It arguably played a significant part in the peace process, when Jack Charlton was appointed manager it didn't go down well with huge swaths of the population being totally against an English man manging Ireland with Paul McGrath even say he thought it was a disgrace, but Jack's charm and the teams success culminating in italia90 made him a universally loved hero. Making him probably the only English man to be a irish hero
this type of video could make for a nice little weekly mini-series leading up to the world cup. enjoyable watch as always king.
Although I wasn't born, this World Cup holds a special place in Irish people's memory as it was our first time we ever qualified and we managed to reach the quarter finals - although we never won a game in normal time haha, there's still a lot of moments that are etched into legend - we've only been in 2 world cups since
As a Cameroonian this was my favourite World Cup 🇨🇲🇨🇲🇨🇲. We did great and nearly made a Semi-Final, the only problem was that it was before I was born 🤣.
Was that match against England controversial?
@@doncarloancelotti2256 Definitely
I'm German and I like that World Cup as well. For known reasons. 😉😂🇩🇪
As an Irishman I think we’ve blanked out the fact it was such a boring group and that we actually never won a game in proper time (I was actually shocked to hear this😮)
That WC is burned into our brains as epic days!!
A shame people frowned upon Argentina so much. Only team to win 2 penalty shoot-outs in the same world cup thanks to the heroics of a *substitute* goalkeeper. Even though his career was mediocre before and after this WC Goycochea is still perceived as a legend in Argentina
And now Emiliano Martinez did the same thing and one upped Goycochea by actually winning the WC this time.
Frowned upon is an understatement, they booed and whistled the team during the anthem at the final. Italians really showed themselves as the most disrespectful and hostile world cup hosts ever. The worst part is that Maradona couldn't shut them up by winning the cup, thanks to that dubious on the clock penalty. Terrible WC.
As always, top quality content .
Really enjoy watching your videos.
Thanks man
My man! I love your videos! You had me smiling with your commentary right off the bat! Thanks for all the work you put into this videos!
I was just a kid at the time. That summer we were all doing the Roger Milla dance every time we scored a goal 😂
And two iconic goalkeepers, Goycochea and Higuita
5 goals in 7 matches. Argentina went into the final with that stat. But while that sounds awful, we must remember that the team had also lost almost half of their team due to Suspension/Injuries. Add to the fact that despite the dominance of West Germany(23 shots, 16 on target), the deciding goal of the match was a penalty, which was in line with all the reckless tackling Argentina was partaking in until that point. Out of all the fouls though, it was a questionable one that got them the penalty.
Also, Matthäus had tripped Jose Calderon after losing the ball in the penalty area. The Referee for this game, Edgardo Codesal, ignored the appeal from the midfielder, refusing to take action.
Luck wasn't on Maradona's side this time.
Argentina would have survive and beating on penalties anyway, for a 3rd time in a row. Argentina would have a Denmark's 1992 story look up.
@@lexkanyima2195 With 9 men on the field?
@@Rajkumarsingh-ci6bi yes, even with 9 men
I will always love it. My first World Cup to watch when I was 8 years old. And my nation won. Also iconic players like Higuita, Roger Milla or Valderrama and legendary games like Germany - Netherlands with Rijkaard spitting on Völler.
4:55 She was probably the most excitement the cameraman got out of this World Cup.
Ahh my friday lunch break watching footbal iconic
Thanks for the quality and consistency! Cheers from Brazil
Really wished Maradona won himself another world cup in that final. What absolute legend to carry his nation the way he did
Amazing content as per usual appreciate your efforts good sir
Love this video.
Make more videos about every world cup. It would be nice ❤️🔥
Yeah it wasn't a great world cup but Caniggia's goal against Brazil and the official song of the tournament just bring me the best of memories 🇦🇷♥️⚽️🥇
1990 was around the time I started to love football as a kid, watching Roger Milla dance in the corner and Argentina getting beaten remain as one of my earliest memories of the great game 🙂
While it was notable for dull play, a combination of England's run to the semis, Gazza's tears and Pavarotti singing Nessum Dorma made it a big deal in England. In the '80s the game itself was often overshadowed by hooliganism, but its increased popularity set the tone for the launch of the megabucks of the Premier League that was launched in 1992.
Great video man, you should do one on the Battle of Nuremberg
Nowadays everyone thinks that they're experts in football without playing the game.
The worst part of a World Cup is closing ceremony. That is the moment you realise that the Festival is over.
But it was rushed
Excellent video lad
You know its a good day when he releases a video. its like the oposite of a school class, CUZ YOU LEARN SOMETHING USEFULL.
Good video, mate. Btw. Yugoslavia was actually very interesting in this tournament, both in terms of having some super quality players (just watch Piksi's performance against Spain) as well as culturally, because the country itself ended in a rather sad civil war little after this World Cup... but also, just in between this World Cup and the Yugoslav wars - Red Star Belgrade became club champions of Europe... Crazy times!
Being Irish, Italia '90 is looked back at fondly here. How couldn't it be? Us in a World Cup quarter-final?! Crazy for a country of barely three million people with no national league to speak of and the competing GAA sports of hurling and Gaelic football to contend with.
Fun fact: Germany won the WC in Italy with Italy finishing 3rd & Italy won the WC in Germany with Germany finishing 3rd.
Coincidence
I think you should keep doing these for other world cups so you can find and share the historic one you like the most
1st! Love your videos man! Keep it up!
2010 World Cup is the most iconic, the music, the vuvuzelas, the weather, the ball (but I’m also saying that bc of nostalgia- the first one I truly paid attention to)
I'm so glad Vuvuzelas were *IMMEDIATELY* prohibited to use from that tournament onwards.
2010 was the best, the vuvuzelas were really awful tho
meh, 2006 is still the best World Cup of the 21st century, followed by 2010.
@@gandalf_thegrey Oh they are actually prohibited? Best decision ever made then
Impossible to watch a game with that buzz
@@bcbitchkkv Spain 82 was the best followed by Mexico 86 and 70
Although Ireland played an incredibly dull style of football it was revolutionary the plan was kick it long and then push up the pitch and try and win it back closer to the opposition goal similar to genegapress before genegapress was adopted by any major teams
Italia 90 was a World Cup that showed us legends of the 80’s and 90’s play in the same tournament, that’s why it is for me the best World Cup in team and player quality
This world cup had the best song of any world cup, here in argentina "Un'estate italiana" is still used by comercials in world cup times.
In Ireland, this is seen as the greatest world cup ever
Same as in Cameroon
Same as in Germany
Always great stories brother, how about one on Ronaldo Nazario?
There’s a podcast on Spotify called 22 goals with a great piece on R9
I do look back on the 2O1O WC with nostalgia goggles on as an exciting tournament being when the last one was going on I was getting seriously into American Football while playing it.
The US run was emotional every match and heart breaking at the end so I'm curious to look more into it to see why so many people hated it.
1994, 1986 or 2014 were successful, but 1990 certainly was one of the toughest and probably had the most top teams all came ready to compete, Holland, Germany, England, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, it was very very tight
I'm in a situation were I'm so young I know this year's world cup is going to be the one I look back on as my nostalgic world cup
my birthday today this was the highlight of my day
I feel that the 2014 world Cup might have been the best in terms of culture impact even in third world countries like mine, the attacking football (sorry Brazil), shakira abvio😂 and thr overall following of the wc across the globe
First I’m hearing and seeing of Lineker taking a sh** on the pitch. WTF???
Lol pity we didn’t have social

Lineker shat himself on pitch more frequently than he got booked
As a Southern African, that 2010 World Cup was the best
Not even South African but I agree

The abuse of the vuvuzelas (by fans of nations) was horrific 🤬
@@theophileburtz1624 even though we went out it was world class. Im from a neighbouring country but we all felt joy. Then Suarez had to ruin Ghana. Thay was my first teuly emotional moment in a WC
Maybe because there was so much tedium at this World Cup, that the highlights seemed like legendary moments in comparison...
I mean, regardless of what happens at a World Cup, if a player shits himself on the pitch, its going to be remembered
You forgot about Holand!! Van Basten, Gulit, Koeman, and Rijkard who spat on Feller, got red and Oranje with their greatest squad lost their biggest chance to win mundial
That team was the same but behind the scenes problems

Hello, I know this is very random put could u do a video on gaetano scirea?
You forgot the real legend of Italia 90: HIGUITA!! 😅
Here in Egypt we still talk about how shit we were according to Egyptian lore this performance is the reason FIFA introduced the Back-pass rule🤣
First world cup I fully watched and understood as 11yo kid, it always brings nostalgia to me. Cameron vs England and Italy vs Argentina are unforgettable games
What I remember is I thought Maradona had no chance but he kept winning and winning and winning until the referi decided otherwise
Caniggia was insane in this tournament and along with Goickachier dragged Argentina to the final. We were introduced to Roberto Baggio after his wonder goal against Czech. We saw Mattahaus at his prime in his 3rd final in a row(went on to play in 5 world cups) Rudi Voller and Frank Rijkard squared up in a spitting competition. This German team on paper was one of the best teams ever and England more the matched them in the Semis. The late Great Bobby Robson should of swapped Shilton for Dave Beasant for the penalty shoot out as he was a far superior saver from the spot. Then we would of then beaten this very average Argentina side. All ifs and buts of course
Matthäus didn't play in 82

I hope that you are perhaps about to do a vid on 94 WC? I reckon it's the exact opposite of Italy's snorefest. USA 94 was imho a goal festival, perhaps the best WC ever. So many goals!
As for worst WC...I think you've hit the nail on this one.....
4:09 AFTER 2 WINS in a row , Cameroon lost "unexpected" 0-4 vs Soviet Union (was a "political" defeat , because Soviet Union "bought" that match , hoping that Romania will lose vs Argentina ,but Romania made 1-1 in the last game vs Argentina , so Soviet Union "struggle" to qualify further in the next round was in vain...
But it was shocking

Yo, Tinashe's using swear word now! 🤣
Yep, I remember that World Cup Final, I am a German after all. That was probably the most boring soccer game I have ever witnessed, only surpassed by the meeting in the 1986 World Cup between Germany and Austria (0:0) where both teams agreed on a draw before the match in order to advance to the next round. Mind blowing soccer to watch, bring a pillow.
Back pass rule has taken 30 years to realise you can just have a sweeper keeper and just keep the ball again.
It's amazing Lineker even appears on TV after that
So ?
im Cameroonian born 12 years after it and I still haven't heard the end of this World Cup from my dad.
Cheers
as an irishman italia 90 is one of the most important sporting moments in our countries history, it was the first time that it felt ok to be irish and to fly our nations colours without it being stigmatized as a terrorist symbol i mean to this day Jack Charlton is one of the greatest sporting figures to represent our country and to make something of that squad.
I think the best WC was 2002 and I don't even remember it cause i was so young, so nostalgia is not an answer. I just feel like WC 2002 is one the most talked about world cups. LIke R9 coming back from his horrible knee injuries and becoming top scorer. Young Ronaldinho with one of the most legendary world cup goals. There are some many moments from that world cup I feel like it is the best ever. Even though I can't remember it
It's also memorable for the shock early exits of pre tournament favourites like Argentina, Portugal and Italy.
with a win equalling 2 points instead of 3 it actually made teams play more expansive attacking football in general
i see football iconic, i click
I thought I would never see a World Cup as unpredictable as USA 94 in my lifetime, but Russia 2018 happened, and is easily one of the best documents of international football at its most competitive.
1934z it’s easy to see Italy 90 as defensive bud it was a side it result of Maradona’a exploits in 86 so you can see the anxiety all defensivea would have had
That I've witnessed, 2010 was the worst despite providing some absolutely iconic moments and memories.
Many Neopolitans loved Maradona more than they loved Italy in 1990. This all goes back centuries, to when the North and South of the country hated each other.
As an Argentinian who only remembers the 2010 WC onwards, Qatar 2022 is obviously my favourite one and Russia 2018 is my least favourite one
Dude, you should do a video on leroy sane.
Ireland has nothing on Paraguay. In the Copa America 2011 Paraguay drew all their group games, all their knockout games to reach the finals, and scoring 0 goals in their 3 knockout games. Most boring team I have ever seen.
THE worst world cup (Italy '90) coming on the heels of THE best world cup (Mexico '86) was definitely a confusing time.
Italy 90 was not as bad as Korea-Japan 2002 was.
I believe in terms of goals and rules... Yeah, they were very different but also the mediocre matches and the corruption behind it. Plus, since Brazil made the worst qualifying round of their history FIFA needed a MUST for them to win and elevate their image in front of the world. And so they did.
That's at least my point of view.
How'd you get the scar in the centre of your forehead? It's the same as mine! My sister pushed me into a radiator as a kid and the side of it went through my head and they apparently had to glue me back together! We're like Gary Neville... piggy bank heads!
I’m very surprised that you didn’t talk about Goycochea! The 3rd choice Argentina gk who had to play because the other two got injured. He saved 5 penalties!!
He talk about Argentina differences of 1986 and 1990 in general, but it was all about Maradona

Why does everyone go on about Roger Miller doing that dance by the corner flag, when was just copying Brazilian striker Careca, who did it before him, during one of Brazil's group games? Is it simply because he was 38, which was considered to be ancient for a striker back in 1990?
Study shows that if I enjoy the vid I like
It has the best World Cup song ever!

I guess the teams took "when in Rome, be a Roman" to heart.
