  • Another recipe for horses; this time for skin medicine.
I originally made this for an older horse of ours who suffered from various skin ailments.
This should work for sweet itch, mild rain rot, and other mild equine skin issues.
THIS RECIPE IS MEANT FOR SIMPLE, EASY-TO-TREAT SKIN PROBLEMS. THERE ARE NUMEROUS SKIN CONDITIONS THAT CAN OCCUR, AND IT'S RECOMMENDED YOU FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH VARIOUS TYPES. HERE'S AN EXTENSIVE AND IN-DEPTH VIDEO ON THE SUBJECT (not mine):
    • Webinar: Recognising, ...
If your horse suffers from prolonged skin disease, deep scratches or other injuries, please seek the professional help of a veterinarian.
This 'medicine' is applied either via spray bottle, or better yet, via soft rag dipped in this solution. If using a spray bottle, please be careful not to spray in the horse's sensitive areas, such as eyes, ears, etc.
White Vinegar mixed with water is a good, cheap, and simple alternative option, but not shown here.
    RECIPE
    - 64 oz Aloe juice (100% Aloe juice drink)
    - 25 oz Mouth Wash (preferably the Listerine Gold/Original)
    - 8 oz Mineral oil
    - 12 oz Calamine Lotion
    - 3 oz Neem Oil
    - 3 oz Povidone Iodine (10%)
And as with any and all of these types of concoctions, you need to make sure your horse/pet isn't allergic to any of its ingredients!!

Awesome! I've been using your fly spray for a couple of years now, and love it! My mare now has raised flaky skin on her rump and I'll be trying this as well. TY once again for a DIY elixir.

You need to make video on an ointment for people who own draft horses with feathers like Shires or Clydesdales so they can prevent "Scratches".

Oh, I've gotta ask. How long can this elixir be used to treat the skin and still be good? I know it has aloe juice which I assume could grow mold.

The Aloe Juice I use (from Walmart) has a preservative in it, so we can keep the whole concoction for the Summer (make it in ~May, use it by October). We don't really need in in the colder months.

Kind of resembles your fly spray. Like in the old western movies were the elixirs that fixed everything right? So I’ve had horses with rain right but what is sweet itch?

lol: "Yesterday Farm's Wonder Elixir" cures horses' ailments, back pain, gout, rheumatism and more!!! 😅 😂
Sweet Itch; it ends up as bald patches after itching caused by hypersensitivity to biting midges (no-see-ums). We have one older mare that has this issue.

So, I'm guessing that you bathe the horse first and then, how do you apply? Sprayer? How often?

Yes, sprayer. for delicate areas, I simply spray it into my hand and apply it with the soaked hand.

Can you do for small amount.. like 1l

Yes, you could, but the problem is buying the ingredients in such small quantities.
If you need just 1 liter you are likely better off just buying something in the store, unfortunately.
